The Pokémon Adventures/Pokemon Special manga did something to this effect in the Red/Blue/Yellow chapters with Arbok. Different patterns on its hood meant that each Arbok had different abilities - and ultimately, hiding those patterns negated the ability to use the ability.

This is something I thought about a LOT when I was 9 years old. I always wanted to try designing them myself, but I could never really draw anything that suited my brain's satisfaction since I wanted immediate results alongside just not being able to draw very well lol. I was very surprised to see your tweet and also see it start a new trend (and even seeing a friend of mine blow up).

The idea of pokemon being slightly different based on which ability they have is a cool idea. It would invite some nice creativity to their designs though it could come with a cost regarding competitive battles. Players can easily determine what abilities the opponents' pokemon have by recognizing their altered appearance, removing some surprise tactics. Regardless, this is a concept that I wish was explored more.

I have a dumb idea so here it is: Some Stemas don’t seem to fit in put in the wild, so to differentiate from Pokémon, make them only accessible through labs that can be found, where you have to fight a trainer for each lab, and different labs hold different stemas. I also think it would be fun to have hard scientists protecting the advanced labs, where multiple types of stemas can form in.

Actual good fan designs! You love to see it. Given the sheer dedication to fan projects I've seen, I wouldn't be surprised if romhacks started doing this. Incidentally, I saw a _Palworld_ mod attempting this sort of thing the other day. Although it basically amounted to recolors, given the way the game handles its passive skill pool (too many potential combos!)

I love the designs and concepts you come up with every video!! I also like how you mentioned colorblindness, whenever people talk about cones I don't hear them bring it up much. As a colorblind artist, I just think it's a fun, albeit frustrating, bit of differences in humans :33

One way i could viably see this implemented in-game: new generational gimmick is a special type of ability patch that gives certain mons new (and more powerful) abilities. Mons who change their ability in this way are granted new ability forms. These abilities will typically be better than anything else the mon has, but the drawback is that your opponent will know about it immediately

I love the artworks. The community of pokemon truly knows how to imagine the limitless possibilities of pokemon. :3

I feel like the in-game sprite should be kept the same, like the "average" form is what we've always known, but the ability forms are the specialized versions of this same species. Every species and breed has slight variations due to genetics!

Since we're on the topic of abilities, your idea gave me one of my own, and I think mine could actually work in Pokemon. I call it "Ability Levels." Here's how it works. Abilities now have an Xp bar, separate from the pokemon's actual level bar. This bar progresses slower than the level bar. When it levels up, the ability is improved upon, and goes from Lvl 1-3. An example would be Poison Heal Level 1: Poison heals user for 12.5% of max HP each turn. Level 2: Poison heals user for 25% of max HP each turn. Level 3: Poison heals user for 30% of max HP each turn and boosts Attack. While my idea may need balancing, it would incentivize commitment to a pokemon and raise viability for plenty of pokemon.

4:26 I understand what you mean. It would be better if mons got their ability forms in their final evolution. Then for regional evolutions or cross-gen evolutions, that would be a different case. Take Piloswine to Mamoswine: in Gen 3, Piloswine would have ability forms, but in Gen 4, the ability forms of Piloswine would converge to a base form until it gains its evolution into Mamoswine, which would Ability forms from that generation onward. That could make sense, right?

This is something that is both cool, but at the same time, a completely bad change. Here's a couple reasons: 1- An entire bloat of new designs: Now, as cool as this concept is, we have to remember a little something... abilities didn't exist in Generations 1 and 2. This essentially means redesigning a lot of the Pokémon to have more variants. This isn't like when they gave over gender differences, where the changes were small, and not all Pokémon received them. 2- There isn't just one species: There's something else this causes, and that's having a lot of different variants mixed on one Pokémon. Things like people being split on "oh i love arbok", "which variant", "shed skin", "dude that looks like, awful, intimidate arbok is clearly the best." 3- Predictability: By doing this, you give away what your strategy is in multiple Pokémon. As an example, pick Clodsire. You never know if Clodsire is gonna run Water Absorb or Unaware. But doing this, the design clearly gives away what they're doing. The only predictions are in the movesets, but it's not as game changing as having to battle Clodsire on what strat it is, besides analyzing the team composition. Or Urshifu, on team preview alone, you don't know if it's Single or Rapid Strike. The prediction becomes a thousand times easier, and it makes competitive Pokémon less of a mind reading game than it already is. Which in my opinion, hurts multiplayer battles, because there's less gambles and brainpower required on winning a game. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

This would be great. Even if it deletes the "surprise" factor in many battles, it would make WAY more sense. If Pokémon abilities are, well, certain abilities the user is able to perform in a passive and uncontrolled way, it would make sense that a Pokémon with a different ability lacked something to make it unable to perform said ability. For example, Breloom losing its "spore organ", so it can't make use of Effect Spore, and so on.

The starters seem like it would work, since all the starters basically have the same base ability, just changed to apply to their main type, and then they have the hidden ability which is more unique. I feel like that could work

This is reminding me of td battles For those unaware, td battles is a tower defense game where you can control monkeys to pop balloons, with each money costing a certain amount of money depending on how good they are, you get mote money after each round with each round lasting a minute or so there are many different types of monkeys who have their fair share of strength and weakness (some more than others, though the better ones cost more money obviously) but that’s overall the concept (there are a few exceptions to this rule, i.e the spike machine which is just a machine or the banana farm which produces more money for you.) Anyway, my main point is in that game depending on what upgrade path you can down (which if we were to transfer this to Pokemon could be like abilities) the monkey will change appearance. For example, let’s take the super monkey. The super monkey is one of the best monkeys in the game but also the most expensive so is typically late game (Oh yeah I forgot to mention you pick between three monkeys at the start of the game) anyway, to start off with super monkey has these laser eyes that deal a lot of damage at a fast rate. The first two upgrade on ether skill tree you can do together, however, the third upgrade is where you lock into one path. You can ether choose to make him a basically a mech. Or you can choose to make him a sun god. Generally the sun god path is considered to be better but it costs more money and takes up more space on the board (oh yeah you only have so much space on the board) the important part here is that the appreance is completely different, ok well it’s not exactly the same as you wouldn’t be changing the appearance as much as it does in td battles but the general concept reminded me of that.

holy crap, I had a very similar idea recently while looking at slowpokes in Azalea in johto redrawn. I thought it would be cool to have different designs to express various personalities in individual pokemon, though I went with natures, your idea of basing them off abilities is far more realistic lol

I can see the "different forms for different abilities" easily being made into a pokémon in the future. It's def more interesting than other gimmicks we have see before, for example spinda's spot variation (I don't hate spinda btw, just think it feels a little underdeveloped).

I could definitely see this in another Kanto remake.

It would be cool as heck to have variations based on ability. However, that would have to be single-player only aesthetics. This would make hunting certain pokemon abilities easier, as well as predictable match-ups against NPCs. The original design should be locked for competitive and ranking matches, as aesthetics could affect the meta-game.
