What if Carroll Shelby designed the Fox-body Mustang? | Chip Foose Draws A Car - Ep. 19

The Fox-body Mustang was in production from 1979 to 1993, which was a revolutionary time period in automotive history. By 1987 the 5.0 liter Mustang benefitted from things taken for granted now: sequential multi-port fuel injection, emissions controls that allowed impressive performance, and aerodynamic flush mount headlights for lower drag and better performance. It was available as a convertible, hatchback and the cheaper, lighter and stiffer notchback coupe. The notchback is now one of the most popular and desirable versions, so let's see how it takes the subtle tweaks from Chip Foose's pen.

Those Mustangs have better sales than the Camaros, but by early 1990, Ford felt that despite great sales, they going to make major changes to the Mustang, ; unpleasant changes. A lot of Ford dealers & Ford upper management protested those changes; fortunately, the then-CEO authorized a total redesign of the Mustang & had it ready by the early 1990s. Would have been great to have Mr Foose do the work.

I dunno if Chip is up to speed on notchbacks or if prices are different where he lives, but in Texas (and what I've seen on Autotrader) notchbacks with a 5.0 in good condition are not $7.5k. More like $15k. That aside, his take on a Shelby notchback is wicked!

I had a 81 notchback back in 1995. My brother and I spent the whole summer of 95 fixing it since it had a blown motor in it. We put a 302 in it from a donor LTD, and we visited every junkyard for parts all summer. First week of school and we finally got the last part for it. When we got home from school the next day to start it for the first time, it was gone. My dad sold it to his friend for $500 bucks and he kept the money...Never even got to hear the damn thing run...yup, awesome childhood memories.

I had a baby blue Mustang 5.0L 5 speed hatch in high school I bought for $2000 that needed work. Turned out it just needed a new fuel pump relay. I had 18 inch chrome cobra wheels. Loved that car. Back then you could get them cheap and find parts in junkyards for next to nothing. They were quick, powerful, cheap, they sounded great and the back end loved to get loose. Dangerous in the rain but a joy to drive. No traction control, stability control or abs. You had to know how to drive to really push them without ending up wrapped around a tree or telephone pole, which was the demise of many fox-body’s. I’ve owned 3 over the years now it’s rare to see one on the road. I’ll never forget what it’s like to drive them.

Funny ... I knew Carroll from our Odessa, TX days when he was hocking his bagged Chile Mix Recipe (which was friggin awesome). Truth ... Carroll didn't design anything. Carroll's strength was identifying people talent at different levels and bringing it together. He was also a brilliant leader. He reminded me of Lombardi. He had a charisma that commanded respect and he also gave it. Nobody on the team seemed to have infighting. His best talent was working with the factory heads (Ford) and pursuing them like a Jack Russell Terrier. Lee Iaccoca didn't "invest" in Carroll, he just surrendered to get rid of him. Carroll would stand on a stump and argue that a tree never grew there. He could also sell you your own underwear. Unlikely we will ever see that spirit again.

This kinda happened. SHELBY unofficially was consulted for the SAAC Mustangs- which were used to federalize the 1993 Cobra GT40 motor. Those SAAC cars are pretty darn nice, and the mods make sense. Had a 93 hatch GT and loved it. Needed cash and sold it in about 30 seconds off Craigslist. I bout it from a family who’s grandad owned it and he was sick. It was perfect. He pulled a little John boat with it haha.

Guys, this is a little touch up any of us regular guys could do for fun not a complete rehash of a missing Shelby. Chip I like how you think, low and wide, and move through air as if you were never there. I saw you in a 1965 chevy Corvair in a Mexican video. What was that about? I have one and I have some ideas I'm wanting to try. I can't draw a mark to save my life. Luv your work.

That drawing has an uncanny resemblance to my '90 Fox Notchback, color and all. It is amazing how similar this looks to it, lowered, front air dam, ground effects all around . The wing on the rear deck is larger than the one Chip drew, providing much needed downforce over the rear of a vehicle with a notorious front-weight bias that is currently set up as a bracket car.

Dad had a friend nicknamed fast Eddie somewhere around the 1990's. He had a Foxbody pushing 700+ horse. IN THE 1980'S. Sounded like a monster truck when he started it up.

I'm not a fan of Fox bodies, but I think this looks fantastic, I love the colors and I would definitely put that on my wall. You were true to the design and I think in an alternate reality, this is what a Fox body Shelby would have looked like, it's like a window into that reality. It's just stunning!

I have a 88 Mustang notch just restored it finished last year just put SVT rims and Street slicks tires I have a friend who constantly build his own cars and he Got Talent where they could give him his own TV show. I'm in the construction business so I was able to trade off work he has two houses plus his parents wanted to do the kitchen's over so I did all the work for free and he did the same but last year that was a Ford competition took first place the trophy was a big Ford oval but I could not believe out of all the amazing cars on display that the judges picked my car as the winner.
