The name differs dependent on the area you are from. I was taught the form was never solidified but the primary way it showed itself was a pumpkin head.

For those of you questioning the name, different countries use different names. I'm doing research for a Spanish project, so I've seen a good amount of them including el cucuy, el cuco, and el cucubano.

Well in Brazil we call him Bicho Papão or Cuca because El Coco would be literally translated to The Poop and I dont think its would be effective to scary child...at the same time Cuca is described as some crocodile witch woman with wing, so hows knows! anyway... Huh, since you mentioned Japan, I wonder if El Coco's power would vary based on different cultures belief of when someone is considered an "adult". Like, does a Jewish kid who just had a bar/batmitzva become safe when they hit 13? What about a place where adulthood starts at 16 not 18? What if we just renamed "children" to "mini-adults"? So much to ponder.
