What if George RR Martin never finishes A Song of Ice and Fire? How does it impact his legacy? Does it even? We discuss that and more on the first episode of our new "What if" series on the House of the Stag Podcast. Hope you'll enjoy part 1 of our discussion!
The cover art for Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring in the thumbnail was done by the amazing Ertac Altinöz!

Hiya! This is definitely the last time that we'll talk about the Winds of Winter delay for a while on my channel. This was the end of our discussion for a brand new "What if?" series on the podcast. Given that I just reacted to a hot take about George's legacy in my previous video, I felt like it fit perfectly to start with this one. See ya soon!

I hope he finishes it, cos being a Berserk fan and hearing Miura died before finishing after DECADES of story hurt a lot.

His legacy will most definitely be tarnished if he never finishes is book series. Right now he is still alive and there is a small chance he could finish but if he should die thats it. He will be remember for masterfully writing a book series that never had a conclusion. Its like if Da Vinci never finished the Mona Lisa's border. The rest of the painting is great but what about yhe rest

I reread lord of the rings like every other year i have read it in every language i speak I read about the world of lord of the rings I watch videos about it I even watxh the bad tv series and crap on it to my friends I dont do that with got There is nothing to explore Nothing to think about Nothing to end it So if he never finishes it i will remember got for an awful tv series ending why will i remember that because it is an ending it is something to think about you have to end something for it to be something to think about if i only had read fellowship and two towers i would have never given so much thought into lotr because there woud be no payoff

@@philipmeisterl well because Lotr basically inspired all of modern fantasy it sort of works as the foundation for everything else including got and thus seems more general and less specific when compared to GoT. compare orcs and trolls to white walkers and children of the forest and you'll not see many other works using the stuff unique to GoT at least not curentelly that I know of, where as finding a fantasy setting that doesn't have orcs in some form is difficult. the only one I can think of is asoiaf itself

Well George is fleshing out his world with other books he's been writing he's written I believe three books in this wait for the next book his main priority is finishing OSOIaF I would hope but he wants to continually add to this world the way Tolkien did until he passed then his son released more into TLOTR. LORD OF THE RINGS Is my favorite fantasy anything of all time and I just don't see anything ever coming close to Tolkiens world but let's let him release everything he can and wants to before saying there isn't enough stuff to read about 😊

I will remember the moment when I finished reading _A Game of Thrones_ and thought it was excellent even if there were no sequels. Perhaps I was prescient. I think none of the other books were as good. As for Martin's reputation, he's probably receding into the past. He did something to shape the field.

I agree that A Game of Thrones IS a finished book. It could be read, and enjoyed and understood by itself. I also would argue that AGoT, ACoK and ASOS provides enough of an arc to consider that as a bit of a trilogy. It is only the vast and unfinished nature of AFfC and ADwD that provides too many cliffhangers and unfinished plots.

Tbh at this point I don't mind him taking so long. Since the other book that I am waiting for is Door of Stone from Patrick Rothfuss, I just enjoy watching the race unfold. Even if Martin finishes Winds at the same time as Rothfuss his Door of Stone, Martin will be still 5 months faster in writing. Keep up the pace! :D

havebt watched the video yet but i want to share my opinion anyways, grrm has no children and when we take a look at the lotr universe it only became what it is today thanks to the work of christopher tolkien. Without anyone who finishes up the world of ice and fire the legacy is limited but perhabs oneday we will get a fanfiction which will be canon for all. Keep in mind it was Vergil who wrote the Aeneis not homer

A Dream of Spring will not be as complex and important to the story as Winds of Winter. It will most likely serve as one big ending to all the characters in the series. Therefore I believe that he will be able to write it faster than the current book. He will be focusing mostly on wrapping up the story as a whole then maneuvering through complex story and character arcs in the next book after Winds of Winter. It took 17 years for JRR Tolkien to write the whole of Lord of the Rings and that isn’t even half as complex as A Song of Ice and Fire. George RR Martin has given every indication that he intends to finish the series and just like other fantasy writers before him I believe that he has the ability to make Winds of Winter happen in the next few years.

J.R.R. Tolkien took around 12 years to write The Lord of the Rings series ... and according to what George R.R. Martin has said his book Winds of Winter will be about as long as the LOTR trilogy. So.... saying an author that takes "so long" to write a book is going to affect his legacy is just naive and outrageous.
@kennyhudson9201
@kennyhudson9201 9 ай бұрын
Who cares what Martin says? Tolkien didn't release the series until it was done. Tolkien didn't take 27 years and still not finished. I think you are naive if you think his taking SO LONG AS TO NEVER FINISH , WON'T AFFECT HIS LEGACY.

This stupid extended universe needs to stop. Nobody wants a Jon Snow show about after the terrible Game of Thrones show. Game of Thrones ruins A Song of Ice and Fire if he doesn’t finish. It becomes the Canon ending.
@kennyhudson9201
@kennyhudson9201 9 ай бұрын
It is the canon ending EVEN if he magically finished the series, which he won't. Because based on HOTD, it proves and reinforces the idea that the books have unreliable and biased narrators, so what is written may not be the truth, whereas the shows are what really happened without the taint and bias of a POV character.
@Dolcetto_
@Dolcetto_ 9 ай бұрын
@@kennyhudson9201 its the ending to the show. For the most part when it comes to shows, movies, game the whatever happens in the books is considered canon unless stated otherwise. In the case of the HOTD George said that the events of the show are to be considered canon since fire and blood is patchwork of recollections.
@kennyhudson9201

@@Dolcetto_ Fire and Blood is a patchwork of recollections. ASOIAF is a patchwork of "unreliable narrators" (George's own words). The shows HOTD and GOT are canon. The books are just the biased views of the characters and the shows are the actual things that happened.
