What if Germany Annexed Austria in 1934?

The Germans famously annexed, or united, with Austria in 1938, but it wasn’t the first time that they tried that. In 1934 the July Putsch took place, which is a failed coup attempt against the Government by pro-German-unification sympathizers. Historically it failed, so Austria got to live for another day, but with Italy and Germany allying, the Italian guarantees on Austria were void, leading to the German annexation.
But what if things went differently, and the July Putsch successfully overthrew the government, replacing it with German sympathizers? Would this move start the Second World War 5 years earlier, destroying Germany, or would it strengthen the German regime, as they would have more people to produce weapons earlier. Let’s find out how this would end for the Germans!

Yes. Partitioned to non-existent. Whole Tyrol and Carinthia to Italy, Austria proper to Czechoslovakia, Hungary split between Yugoslavia, Romania and Czechoslovakia. No Horty, no Anschluss

Random, very realistic idea: Catherine the Great and Mustafa III meet, fall in love, and decide to get married, forming a personal Union between these countries and somehow managing to get the elite in their empires to accept it. This would probably lead to European states forming a coalition to bring them down, but could they win? Who knows…

Yeah pretty bad scenarios. Allies just going to war and not trying to mediate is definitely not realistic. Especially when Italy is actively invading Austria. Also if Germany did Sudetenland historically. It may not have lead to the same poland crisis. As Germany didn’t expand so fast. As Austria and Czechoslovakia would be alot futher apart.

Scenario ideas: What if Poland embraced the Piast doctrine, pushing for borders akin to the post-WW2 borders but in the 1920s? What if Cyprus seceded and joined Greece in the 1830s (which would negate the whole Ottoman treaty)? What if Serbia and Romania unified in 1878? What if all European nations and Japan failed in their attack on China?

In this scenario, i don't think munich agreement would happen sooner, only if german banks were to go bankrupt sooner than in reality (not what i think). Czechoslovakia would also have intensified armanent and fortifications construction on whole german border - especially in plains of southern moravia. But this isn't really asociated with this scenario

I have to disagree on the treaty of Versailles bit This was a defensive war and seeing how much the Allie's allowed the Germans to break it in our timeline they definitely would drop most restrictions at least temporarily during the war as it was a defensive war

@@rewriting-history yeah I guess but it wouldn't be known by everyone plus seeing how much the Germans broke the treaty in our timeline with no excuse it would be highly unlikely Britain and France would do anything to stop it maybe it would change how the allies dealt with German auctions in the future But Britain especially wouldn't go to war over Austria

Haha, no. Germany didn't even start rearmament in 1934 and was still completely unable to invade bigger countries like Poland (or maybe even Czechoslovakia). Italy on the other hand, although not as strong as the Western powers, still proved to be capable enough to beat secondary powers like Ethiopia and Albania. In fact, Italy still had much more troops, tanks and planes than Germany in 1934. And don't forget the terrain: Italian and Austrian troops could give the German invaders nightmares in the mountains.
