Uncle Sam is actually a pretty tragic character. He not only witnessed his country being occupied by the Axis, but his team (specially poor Phantom Girl 😢) was slaughtered by Alexander Luthor's villain team during the "Infinite Crisis". And despite all of this, he never gave up and fought till the end. I am not even american, but damn, that son of a b*tch made me proud to feel American, anyway.

Neither am I, but... That's what america is about, or what it used to be anyways. Yeah they were loudmouths and a bit self-righteous, but the old americans dreamed of a world where every man (and eventually every woman) was free to forge their own destiny and had no king or fuhrer or premier to oppress them
@woodrobin4 ай бұрын
Uncle Sam in DC is the literal embodied concept of the American Dream -- the ideal and idealized version of America. He (or at least the proto-version of him) was created in a mystical ritual by the Freemasons among the Founders. He requires a human willing to act as a conduit for him (as do beings like the Spectre and Doctor Fate) but given that, he is as strong as the belief of Americans in a better America. He also split into Billy Yank and Johnny Reb and fought himself during the Civil War, so he's subject to derangement and damage if the country isn't united, and he can be weakened by things like widespread cynicism. He also once teleported to Smallville and punched Superman into the next state because Luthor being elected President caused him to start to take on Luthor's belief that Superman was a dangerous alien and a corrupting influence on humanity. Superman was able to talk him down, though, but as he is a magical being, Superman was getting his ass handed to him prior to getting through to Sam's basic decency and sense of justice, since Superman is vulnerable to magic.
@woodrobin4 ай бұрын
@@Mohamedbloo Uncle Sam doesn't embody America as it is nearly so much as he embodies the dream of America -- America as it wants to believe that it is. He's an aspirational ideal, not an accurate reflection. If people generally rejected the hope or dream of a better America, and accepted the idea of an America that's basically failed and fallen short of what it could have been, Uncle Sam would wither and die. Lack of hope for a better America is basically his kryptonite.

I feel this is a really interesting case study about the essence of Superman. If he grew up in any other situation, would Superman still be Superman? What I found interesting was that while he grew up to embody Nazi ideology, we see throughout the story a sort of inner real Superman trying to get out. It’s like that despite believing in what he was raised to believe, a part of him new deep down that this was wrong and he couldn’t bring himself to defend anymore.

I’m ngl I thought this story would be packed with more internal battles. Cuz I feel like snapping Superman out of Nazi teachings wouldn’t be an easy task, he would have to see his destruction from the eyes of a survivor or something planning to betray the team. I don’t think Overman would go “maybe what I’m doing is bad”, out of the blue. Overall, writing was a lot more lacking than I thought. I would like this to be more fleshed out as a mini series or such.

1:09 That comic on the left, American Crusader, is actually a real comic from Nedor Comics back during World War II. Archibald Masters is a college professor that walked into an atom smasher and got superstrength, speed, and flight. As the American Crusader, he fought Nazis. Lots of Nazis. The Lois Lane character in this is his secretary, Jane. What was always funny about this comic was that rather than JUST being a Clark Kent character in his civilian identity, Archie also played the fool, seemingly being oblivious to the entire adventure that went on around him rather than just being timid. Jane was also always on his case for being more into his field of study than into the American military machine. I haven't ever seen him with a shield, though.

I dislike using the word cringe but it's very much accesible to use here. CRINGE ASF.

Don't let people discourage you, everyone has the right to enjoy what they like. I was here when reading comics was cringe, at the time when the word cringe didn't even exist. To quote Stan Lee, they are characters, whoever the writer wants them to win is going to win, no matter what justification you try to give. So don't think about it too much. I know absolutely nothing about SCPs, but the Justice League has already faced beings with cosmic powers, and most of the members are broken to a level that one could argue they are not well written, so I could imagine DC winning. But, I don't like power scaling, I think it discredits comics and only divides the community, instead of appreciating how beautiful comics are.
