In 732, Islamic forces invaded France in what they believed would be an easy victory. Instead they were beaten back by Charles the Hammer which allowed Christian Europe to for the next few centuries fight against the Moors in Spain.
What if Muslims however won at the battle? Would Europe have become Islamic? Here is one scenario.

Guys, this is getting ridiculous. Let's remove some misconceptions shall we? 1) The Muslim empire was never united after the Umayyad dinisty. They had dozens of small kingdoms with a quazi-feudal system much like Europe. 2) The Jihad is not the Muslim equivalent to the crusade. A crusade requires a decree from the head of the religion (Pope). While Islam has no one religious head, this means anyone can declare a Jihad for any reason, and anyone is free to join; but its about as official as the USA when it says "We are not torturing anyone". 3) Islam is a religion that formed an Empire, its success is a testament to a well founded religion. It did not last very well after that because people decided that the empire shouldn't change with time *Note: don't mix religion and empire people. 4) Islam is a religion of peace/Islam is a religion of war. Neither is true, Islam is a religion of living, it shows when one should lash out, and when one should stay his hand. It explicitely says to not kill priests or practitioners of the other Abrahamic religions (though taxing and making life miserable is fine, if not frowned uppon). The violence stated in the Quran is also present (worse) in the old testament of the Bible. It is not a nice religion, but good people will be good and bad people will be bad regardless of religion. 5) Muslims did love knowledge, they preserved a massive part of Greek and Roman knowledge and understanding. They made massive strides in technology, mathematics, philosophy. (we know this because in the 1100s Europe went through a type of cultural revolution, which coincided with the Crusades and the Rennaissance coincided with new trade-routes to the middle-East and the Spanish conquest of the Moors and their universities) This all ended when one the Muslims had the bright idea that mathematics was actually the work of the devil and it all went downhill from there.

Extremely unlikely as the conference of Yalta clearly stated where the line of occupation and fighting would be. Stalin was deadset on being the one to deliver the deathblow/aka taking Berlin himself, up to the point where he'd relieve Zhukov off command at the last moment to claim the glory himself. Strategically it wouldn't make sense for the Western Allies either to overstep. They would destroy their agreement with the Russians and all they would gain is rubble and a ton of extra loss in men and material. The Russians lost about 81k troops in the battle for Berlin and about 280k got wounded or sick.

unlikely, the Umayyads (in Spain) and the Abbasids (Arabia) had an absolutely horrible relationship, (they wanted each other dead more then England and France did). And once the Empire split into a dozen different kingdoms, it would be impossible for the Umayyads to be able to communicate with India. So they would also seek out trade-routes in the West
@guyonacomputer1261
@guyonacomputer1261 8 жыл бұрын
Hal Effect if this is the case, wouldn't it be also likely that before they even seek trade routes in the west the Christians would attempt to conquer them? I mean, if the empire fractures and the Umayyads are not getting help from the rest of the Islamic world (barring maybe some of North Africa), I think it would be more likely that the Europeans try to retake Spain. Not even in the way it happened in reality with Spanish Christians pushing them back, it could be that some French King gets greedy and attacks them when they are down. Or would this also be unlikely? Genuinely asking.
@haleffect9011
@haleffect9011 8 жыл бұрын
Guy On A Computer I don't think a Muslim Spain could happen for the very reason you stated. When the reconquista happened, very few other Muslim states helped the moors. The French king did try and take Spain back back, but the main reason why it took so long was that France was far too busy with its wars against England and the Germans (and the Italians) and the Moors posed very little danger to the French. The moors were also smart in that they didn't treat the Christians in their lands badly, second class citizens to be sure, but they weren't unhappy. This meant that the people didn't rise up over and over again, they were content as they were. So France and Europe supported the various Christian Spanish kingdoms during the reconquista, but they had better things to worry about, such as internal conflicts and various Crusades in richer and more important parts of the holy land. This is the reason why I don't buy so much the theory that the Crusades were primarily to reconquer Christian land, because if it was that, they would have started in Spain. It was to gain control of Jerusalem, reunite the Catholic and Orthodox churches, unite Europe against a common enemy, a tinge of revenge and to ensure that the Turks aren't able to endanger Christendom, but it wasn't to reconquer lost land.

That will probably just be more bloody fighting that would make America less able to help Europe completely, but Soviet's numbers alone would have probably killed the Germans. The only really difference would be the ratio of Communist and Capitalist nations during the Cold War, which could have turned into a complete Russian evaporation since the atomic bomb could have easily still be developed and without Russia's construction of such devices, several strikes on Russian soil would have probably destroyed most, if not all, of its interal support.

As Arab Muslim (who studied arab/islamic history most of his life), I don't think an Islamic country would hold much longer in Europe due to civil wars between muslims themselves. The Spanish Muslims (Al-Andulus) actually got separated from other Islamic nations of North Africa because of rivalry with other nations within Middle East. Even to today, most of Islamic nations are either in war or rivalry. So in short, Arabs will simply fight against themselves... just like what's going on with Iraq and Isis or Syria.

I think Islam would have been much more dominant in Europe You have to look at this from a medieval perspective, rather than a 21 century one. A victory like that isn't just a military and political event. There would have been a psychological and a religious effect as well. People back then believed that God had a very active role in daily live. The whole principle of trail by ordeal comes from this believe. They likely would have altered their views on the two religions. Viewing Christianity as weak and 'not favoured by God' while taking the Islamic victory as a divine endorsement for the claim of true faith. I think a good number of people might have converted over the next decades. Christianity would definitely have been much, much weaker. A victory like that would also have had consequences back home for the Islamic rulers. It might have given them the popular support needed for further invasions of Europe.

Yeah you are right but they still would have had to deal with the Germain tribes and not even the romans could control them and they tried but theirs also anthor effect that your missing thats one possibility dont get me wrong but heres anthor one by defeating the franks at the battle of tour the other christians could look at it like oh shit we got to push the Islamic out witch in turn could unify alot of tribes into kingdoms and lead an counter invasion and possable take back southern France or even Spain again as you said people durnign this time where heavily religious as they could see it as omg these people have taken christian lands how dare they and get their blood boiling for a counter attack

Otto Von Bismark the thing is muslims were different from the romans and from Charlemagne they didn't force anyone to convert to Islam they weren't oppressive as the others the reason why alot of people in the Middle East converted to Islam was because they found it better than paganism and Christianity as Islam didn't have the control that the patriarchy Or the church had plus they allowed freedom of speech and everyone to practice their religion freely as long as it wouldn't do any harm to the society muslims made people convert as they were different from the other rulers they were just and encouraged science so the people automatically submitted to them an example of that is Egypt as Egypt was ruled by oppressive Byzantines and romans before plus they were one of the most rebellious states in any empire Egyptians accepted the Arabs because of their good treatment to them and their manners the same could have been done to the Germanic tribes beer wouldn't be much of a problem as newly converts would have a partial ban on alcoholic beverages they wouldn't be allowed to pray while their drunk but apart from that they would be allowed to drink but on an average level so they wouldn't get drunk by time they would abandon beer

the truth is while the battle of tours was important for western Europe the ultimate fate of Christianity was decided at the siege of Constantinople that same year in which an Arab Muslim army tried and failed to take the great city. this Islamic army actually had plans for long term conquest of eastern Europe as it was a civilized region that would easily be subjugated after years of war. the only problem was the great walls and the use of Greek fire which devastated the attackers. had the Byzantine empire fallen so early on in the middle ages it would have been possible to see a Muslim Europe after a few centuries at least as I see it.

Later, the muslin army was stopped cold at Vienna (Austria). Twice! Is history teaches us anything, it is that muslims are no match to Europeans when it comes to modern warfare. I don't know if it is for religious reasons, or political, or cultural, but it seems muslims always lose.

There is a very good guess that a European Islam (Islam replacing Christianity)would have changed Islam to produce a very different Islam! Then the German Frankish and Saxon Muslims would have still retained their Nordic personality. Notice the difference between Turkish Speaking, Farsi Persians, and Arab Muslims actually have different cultures and modes of thought that is not completely overwhelmed by the religion of Islam. Therefore the European Muslims would have had a unique character that would have greater influence over the Muslim world. The chances are that the Jews may "not" have thrived as well under Islam, as much as they did under Christian kings. Of course you need to ponder and chew over this long and hard, but Christianity did become European, in Europe!
@TimothyMaloneygorgara
@TimothyMaloneygorgara 7 жыл бұрын
Jews made more wealth, and had far more influence as "Middlemen and interpreters" in Christian Europe and Russia than they ever did in Muslim countries including Turkey. It is true Spanish Jews sided with the Muslims, and even plotted in the 15th century with the Ottomans to reconquer Spain, so that along with the Moors they were forced to forsake their wealth and resettle in North Africa. In Italy the Jews thrived especially in the Papal States, and in Venice. Jews have always regarded Jesus and his "cult" as the greatest catastrophy to befall Israel, and often plotted against the Church, even in protestant Germany. Modern Jewish historians are no longer coy about expressing this fact either.

Timothy Maloney I think your "very good guess" is just awful. You grossly underestimate the extent to which Islam imposes conformity in basically everything, and you grossly overestimate native Europeans's ability to resist it. Had Islam conquered Europe, most likely Europe would look a lot like the rest of the Islamic world: backwards - socially, economically, politically, scientifically, technologically, etc - with people trying to get out, not to get in (this assuming there would a less bad place one could move to!). There would be no Renaissance, no Age of Discovery, no Scientific Revolution, no Industrial Revolution, no Age of Enlightenment, no Globalisation. Europe would be insignificant in world history by any metric, and the whole world would be worse of, more backwards for it. If you disagree name one Islamic country where you'd like to live in? One that is not developed by oil extraction as this technology and vehicles were invented by Westerners and would likely not even exist.
@hydernoori146
@hydernoori146 6 жыл бұрын
Timothy, I think you're under estimating the effect on Islam on cultures. It eradicates or, if not fully successful, permanently alter the cultures which it overtakes making it impossibly less diverse and less tolerant of dissent. Are there genuine differences between Turks, Iranian, Indonesian or Moroccan Muslims? A quick glance at there modern Islam-inspired governing constitutions beg the differ. Women are second class (yes even when they have a female prime minister) so there goes have the society...Add gays and religious minorities and you have a full blown disaster. Hence, modern Islam.

Christianity is a jewish cult, whether muslims nor christian adhere to jewish God and saints. So therefore jews take the credit for laying foundation of advancement that christian and muslim had. Even If abraham was never existed, the world will be consumed by polytheist (hinduism, confucianist, etc), shamanist, animist, buddhist, zoroastrians, etc. And there still be war between humans.

What gives you that right to start a war when the local population did not want to surrender their ancestral homes to pave a path for your "thoughts and ego" of a nation for yourself? He's just the first Emperor who did it, there were many who unified China. Qin Shi Huang needed to get rid of the other 6 countries (Qi, Chu, Yan, Zhao, Wei, Han). If Qin didn't do it, one of these would have. China was stuck under the feudalism system for around 2000 years, I personally don't think a major difference would occur. For 2000 years, China was pretty much going through the cycle of "New dynasty established --> Things going pretty well --> Things start going bad --> Tribes and provinces revolt/invade, China gets divided --> One of the power overpowers everyone else --> New Dynasty established ...."

I'd imagine that Spain would identify more with North Africa rather than Western Europe and would be more culturally Arabic. I'm sure that Spain would eventually find the Americas, but it would be after the Christians did. I'd think some minor colonization would happen in Brazil and the Caribbean, but not much. Maybe some King would want to expand Islam religiously, and that would lead to more colonization, but that's up to speculation.

One BIG issue in this one: feudalism was already well underway by 732, Charles and his son rode the wave a lot more than they caused it. From the early 600s, monasteries and noble families were increasingly developing their own power bases away from central power (unlike what had been the dominant pattern under the early Merovingians). Large powerful landlords like Charles Martel himself or the dukes of Aquitaine who had been battling the Moors for a while by then had, by the early 700s already significantly eroded royal power. If anything Charles, Pepin and Charlemagne tried hard to invert the trend and to erect a strong central power anew with the rise of a new nobility (the comites) whose wealth and might came from delegation of the king's authority rather than their own steam. But that seriously backfired c.850 and full-fledged feudalism ensued. So had Martel been killed at Tours political fragmentation would probably have happened all the same, only another family than the Carolingians would have led the charge. Other small issue: the ethnic conflict on the Muslim side isn't between Berbers and Arabs (that's for later, mostly the 1000s) but between Yemeni and Northern Arabian tribesmen IMO a much more interesting what-if is related to Charlemagne himself. In 778, the Franks launch a large Spanish campaign but poorly executed this attack is a complete failure, Muslim allies change side, the Franks even ending up massacred by fellow Christians, the Vascons, at the famous Ronceveau battle. But what would have happened if the campaign had been better organized and the Frankish troops better commanded? Thinly populated Muslim Spain was a perfectly reasonable target for Charlemagne, he could plausibly have swept through the peninsula in just a few months. He was basically only one big victory away from taking al-Andalus. Then what? Muslim counter-attack was unlikely as the Abbassid califate was fast loosing its grip over Maghrib, so the Franks could have hold on their new conquest relatively easily. That would have probably changed the dynamic of the Carolingian empire. With the large wealth from Spain, Charlemagne may have been in the position to repel both rebel lords and Viking attacks and install a true Europe-wide empire from the Elba river to the (other) Elba river.. It is not unthinkable that Western Europe may have entered the second millenium as a unified polity and NOW it gets interesting...

Lots of fun speculating. And I totally get the 'no charlemagne' idea being important. It's like asking what would've happened in WWII with no Churchill. There are seemingly times in history where 1 "great man" [a la 'great man historical narrative'] makes a huge difference. I have one main quibble though, because this reminds me of something I learned from Kirby Ferguson in his series 'everything is a remix' -- something called 'simultaneous discovery' [I'm paraphrasing]. Basically in this context, who's to say that a different ruler wouldn't have risen up to take Charlemagne's place in history? If the conditions were right for a ruler of that type to accomplish what he did, it's also quite possible that another figure would have done it at some point.

@thenormalone590
@thenormalone590 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hermann3635 it's easy to nit- pick and attempt to fit a narrative. Yet the same ottomans through remarkable strategy and technology were able to conquer the impenetrable constantinople. Talking about nick names...Baghdad and Iraq was nicknamed the breadbasket of the world...and at that time, the world was the sick man, it was through the preservation of knowledge, medicine and technology by these muslims that allowed the world to flourish thereafter. This has already been acknowledged by the western historical academies. Ibn Sina was a remarkable professor in medicine..but you wont have heard of him...because in the west we refer to him as Avicenna. Look at how many medical institutes, hospitals, medical centres are named after him. He was also depicted in the Royal Pharmacetical Society of Great Britains emblem....sick man indeed...👈🤣. Surprise Didn't notice that reply of yours when I should have, here is my response: There is violence from Shia extremists in VERY small numbers(relatively), Sunni was the main form of Islam at the time, and, while they share some beliefs, are not the same Muslims as the ones around the period the video speaks of. Sunni has also matured, like Christianity post-crusades. until the renaissance Christianity was just as violent in some sects, and Sunni calmed down due to various factors in the 19th-20th century. the issue is that Shia has not had its enlightenment, its westernization. With time comes knowledge and eventually Shiites will calm the fuck down. This violence is not on a major scale, all we need to do is redraw the borders in the middle east in a way that ends the bullshit and peace will come. The Muslim population will go to at most 5-10% in Europe if we let refugees in. In 20 years, assuming we can reach a solution in the middle east, this conversation will be irrelevant. Muslims aren't the problem, instability and poorly drawn borders are the problem.
