1. You’ve mentioned several times that a therapist shouldn’t be working harder than the client, but what if they are? How do you address a client who has run out of motivation to get better? ...
08:34
2. I struggle a lot with comparing myself to other people who seem more happy, successful, talented, and so on, than me. I know that ‘comparison is the thief of joy’ but doing this is automatic to me, like a reflex. Being told not to compare myself to other people is like being...

4. I was wondering (and I hope this isn’t too insensitive). It seems that everyone is struggling with their mental health to an extent. But if it’s so common, why does my therapist tell me that it’s okay that I can’t just push mental health aside, when everyone else has to just get on too?
51:08
5. I have a question about therapists showing emotion in session. Last week I was talking to my therapist about my suicidal ideation and some rituals around attempting. Her response after I explained what was going on was that it makes her sad and she teared up and ...

6. I feel like I don’t know who I am. I’m so used to mirroring people and reflecting their emotions rather than actually feeling it that I no longer feel like me and at times I don’t really feel like I’m real. I don’t know what my values in life are, my desires, hopes or just in general ...

7. Does attachment to your therapist always have to stem from childhood wounds? I am really attached to my therapist, but I don't have any history of emotional abuse or neglect in my childhood. My mom was present and there for me my whole life up until my twenties (a few years ago) when she left and wasn't there for me, and that's when my therapist came into my...

I get you! I work on that too. My friend has a gorgeous home and I was there this afternoon. I found myself comparing the size and furnishings, etc. Then I noticed her jewelry and her kitchen dishes…the funny thing is, I don’t want to clean a house that big, and I have a different taste in jewelry and dishes. So, As I’m talking myself out of that downward spiral, I kept asking myself, Jane, do you really want this house, that ring, these dishes? It helped. It’s more about a fear that I’m lacking something rather than really wanting what she has. Just thought I’d share that and thanks for your comment.

My question was number 5. Thank you for answering! I will ask my therapist now that I know it's not weird. You definitely hit the nail on the head in regards to sadness making me uncomfortable and your thoughts around that. I have CPTSD and part of my trauma involved getting beat for crying after or during SA as a child. I also think it may be because I'm afraid I can't pull myself out of the sadness on my own as well. Thanks for giving me something else to explore with my T surrounding that! This really made my day that you answered my question!

Love the podcast! Just wanted to add that it's not true that people don't compare suffering in physical illness (instead of mental illness). This is a huge problem in many chronic illness communities and face book groups for example. People feel they aren't sick enough to participate in the community when they go back to work for example, even though they are not 100% better. Or people compare diseases, especially healthy people do this ("well, at least it's not cancer") or patients comparison between how much more insurance and emotional support some illnesses get and internalizing that ("I don't have a scary diagnosis like MS, I'm just in bed with pain all day, so it's not as bad"). I hope this was useful :)

What we need is to feel known, for others to make a little niche in their minds where they keep what they know about us up to date. When we know and feel they are doing that, we feel more secure. It's just a human need we have, what connects us all together. It's a survival need. If someone is thinking about us, they will look for us and get us out of danger. Just the feeling of them thinking of us as we go about our lives.

Question 4. I can completely understand and relate too how your feeling. and things are for you it's a struggle and hard for us all anyone .who suffers from depression and anxiety struggle s with things differently .some people are able to manage there anxiety and depression better. than others. some people need medication and therapy .or can get by just taking medication. or just having therapy .or stronger people I've heard say they can cure themselves. I believe everyone needs help so many people have mental health. we shouldn't judge who feels worse or has worse symptoms. or struggling more we should be kind and offer support even if we hardly know the person .we all need to be more kinda x

Just a thought regarding the ”everyone is having a cold” analogy. I think that I could compare my mental status to having a cold actually. If ”everyone” was having a cold and every one of them apart from me managed to pull through it except for me, I’d be annoyed as well. Like - ”Why do I need sick days when everyone else can just cope with their cold?! I’m weak and useless.” It’s not that I’m not allowed to have that cold, it’s the fact that I can’t seem to be able to handle it as well as other people.

Have you ever considered there are some who are psychologically terminal? That it's not likely anyone can fix them. Try tellin' em that. I've noticed doctors really hate admitting defeat. There's a lot you can fix, but there's a whole lot you can't. Some are broken beyond the limits of your field. Maybe one day, we'll fix all mental illness, but we're far from that today. If anything, I've never seen so many broken humans in my life - a damning statement on the science of psychology.

Dog breeds with shortened snouts shouldn't go on planes because they might have breathing problems. It'd probably be a non-issue for a pitbull, since they're powerful, robust dogs (the rule was written mostly for pugs and English bulldogs) but I wouldn't want to risk it with a dog I liked.

Why can't people be OK with people being in hard places though? Why is others suffering so hard on others? I mean if the situation fits I get it. But then how do you see others who might be in way more difficult places? Maybe it's alright for others to be in hard places and to not take it on ourselves or hold it against them. I get it made you better but sometimes it feels necessary just to suppress all our hardships because others can't handle them.

I understand what you’re saying, I think about being ok with another person’s suffering. The tendency is to hand them a tissue, hug them, tell them it’s going to be ok, etc. One of the greatest gifts we can give someone is to stand with them as they suffer, not trying to change or fix anything. That takes courage and selflessness to put your own discomfort and fears aside in service of another. Occasionally, if I feel compelled to say anything, I may say something like, “Lola, I am honored that you trust me to share your grief/burden/heartbreak, etc. Thank you.”

"pitbull" is in theory short for "American Pit Bull Terrier," though in practice any dog that's so much as met a bulldog gets called a pitbull.
