If you use back button focus instead of the shutter press you can force auto focus during recording, but generally the f mount glass has a switch on the lens to go from manual to auto. Are talking about switching the focus modes?? I'm pretty sure that's no worries on the Z9.

In his video : Nikon vs Sony (Modern Z Glass vs Vintage EF L Lenses), the sony was hunting the entire time and the Nikon was on focus. And in this video he uses adapted glass on a non Nikon adapter and expects it to work flawlessly. While when he uses the Nikon lens even vintage the shot is always in focus. I dont think he is unbiased; he does everything to make the NIkon look bad. A menu is like an operating system you need time to get used to it.

New cameras are fun and all but I'm stuck on the color of Blackmagic, I don't mind a crop factor, the 105, 85 and 58 are all excellent lenses to me, so it's great to see the comparisons in any case!

The Nikon with the 85mm 1.2 was obviously the best. Clearly the highest sharpness, contrast and because of that the most 3d pop. It also clearly had the softest toneh. The BMPCC with the old Nikon lens was out of focus, you can tell by the sharp grass behind you and the chromatic abberation on you.

It's already mentioned in the Video, but for reading people, Viltrox F to Z adaptor cannot manual adjust aperture with manual old F mount lens. I have the same 105mm f2.5 and I also stuck at wide open. Hopefully, Viltrox patches the firmware in the future. The official FTZ or some dumb adaptor should workaround that issue.

I have a hunch that Nikon pop isn't micro contrast related but more about how they correct for field curvature. The size of lenses means they are probably capable of keeping the bokeh perfectly in line with plane of focus with no bleed. So you look like you're on a perfectly flat pane of frosted glass. It's just a different kind of pop.

I will try to explain the AF functions in the Nikon Menu system As you mention, you can find AF settings in three main groups: The Photo Menu, the Video Menu and the Custom Menu. In the Custom Menu you have Autofocus settings and Movie settings (both with AF settings in them). You have an offbeat camera, The Z f, which is a modern mirrorless camera in a retro styled body. The Nikon menu system is built for a modern digital camera in a modern DSLR body. That approach works evenly well for a modern MILC in a modern DSLR type body like the Z50, Z6, Z8 etc. Not so much for the Z fc and Z f. But they keep the menu the same for backward compatibility. In a modern Nikon DSLR camera, you had a lot of physical buttons and switches you could use to change almost every setting on the camera, without haven to go into the menu. These physical dials are still duplicated inside the menu though, in the form of the Photo Shooting Menu and the Video Shooting Menu. Since you had dials for various AF functions on the camera, you have the same functions in the menu. With the release of Nikons mirrorless cameras, many of those physical dials are gone (due to the smaller camera bodys) but the menu functions still remain, to provide backward compatibility. Tip: You can also change these via the "i" button and the back Command dial. Quicker than going into the full menu. The Custom Setting Menu contains (as mentioned) two places to change your AF settings. The Autofocus menu (called the "a" setting; a1, a2, a3 etc.) is where you can change the cameras behaviour towards AF in general, but mostly for photograph. The last place you can change AF settings, is in the Movie "g" setting (and this only work when taking videos). Here you most likely want a slow focus speed to get a slow focus pull, something you don't want in photo mode, where you want the camera to focus ASAP (hens, why Nikon split the setting up in two categories). That became a long post, but here we are. Hope it was helpful.
@digitaltelegraph
@digitaltelegraph Ай бұрын
For Nikon Video, when you manually focus, you can switch back to the auto focus mode you want via the menu system. For the ZF, I use the i-menu since there are not a lot of customer buttons free, but on my Z9, I map auto focus modes to a button so I can quickly switch. The recording does not stop when switching modes.
@digitaltelegraph
@digitaltelegraph Ай бұрын
Actually, I just tested on my Z9 and when I use the manual focus ring, it will return to autofocus when I hit my back button. I then found in my ZF that I needed to program the AE back button for AF-ON and now in video, I can hit the back button to auto-focus while recording a video. That should solve your manual to auto-focus issue.

I wouldn't say that, but I guess it depends on your use case if you're shooting sports or something it may be more noticeable. I own a Z8 and ZF and for portraiture and street photography it doesn't bother me although I probably use manual focus lenses more than anything else.

I'm not sure about the ZF, but on the Z8 and Z9 you dont have to use a smaller box unless there's multiple people. It just finds you. You're used to Sony, so thats why youre frustrated. I feel the same way when i have the use the Sony cameras at work (I'm used to Nikon). I used to pull my hair out, but im getting used to it. You really need to fine tune the focus settings on Nikon to get it to work predictably. When you get used to the settings, the overall experience is rewarding. Nikon menus have gotten long in the tooth. I think they need to add some sub menus or a search function. Sony can also be weird with their menu. Sometimes I i find settings in sub menus that make no sense.

Hmm…ive shot Sony a7s3 for 3 years, i now switched to Nikon Z8. Imo the Nikon is the better filmmaking and overall camera because of its gorgeous internal raw in 100p Full frame or even 8k60. Sonys Eye AF and extreme Low light was a bit better thats true, Sonys focus breathing a lot worse tho (almost all nikon z glass doesnt breathe its amazing). Not to mention the z8 is ofc. one of the best stills cameras in the world right now. Nikons colourscience is what ultimately convinced me, even after years with Sony i immediately got better skintones when i tried the nikon. And the internal RAW is absolutely amazing…nikon was late but their makeing some awesome stuff atm

Micro contrast can exist in camera sensors too, a thicker CFA (Colour Filter Array) on older cameras can give superior colour contrast and depth. Canon older sensors tended to exhibit very good colour contrast but lacked dynamic range as a result, Sony decreased the thickness of their CFA in order to increase dynamic range and allow for better ISO performance. Nowadays, most camera manufacturers have very thin CFA in order to stay competitive in ISO and dynamic range performance. So in reality, a true 3D pop machine would be an older camera body like Canon R, with vintage lenses.
