Shaq's free throw struggles are well documented, so we decided to find out what his career would have looked like if he'd never made a single one. Conclusion: he's still very, very good and valuable to his teams so you* don't need to practice your free throws.
Welcome to DORKTOWN, a new Jon Bois & Pals series that's all about being a sports dork.
*assuming you are Shaq

I played my brother in 2K some years ago, back when Shaq was still playing and at a high level. I became quite pissed, because my brother shot (and made) more 3s in that game with Shaq than Shaq attempted in his entire career, and hit them at an 90% clip, including a 3/4 court shot to win at the buzzer.

My favorite Shaq statistic is that when David Robinson claimed the scoring title in the 93-94 season after dumping in 71 points in the final game of the season to beat him by 1 half point (29.8 to 29.3). They were 1 and 2 in total free throws attempted. If Shaq had made just 28 more free throws of the 850 he attempted, he would have won the scoring title by .02 points

My sister told me about this strategy she discovered after decades of research on how to succeed (generally in whatever). It’s fairly simple: work on things you excel at while never putting too much effort in things you’re terrible at cause they’re a lost cause. My immediate thought was Shaq. Shaq is a player who does what Shaq does best while never needing to care about what he does poorly. If you took Shaq’s skill set in a game like NBA live or NBA 2K and evened then out across the board... he’d be an interesting player... So, take all stats Shaq has (PPG, shots per game, rebounds, steals, blocks, etc) and weigh them against the average. By percentage of players who’ve had enough time on the court for their stats to be relevant. The average = a value of 5. You take what Shaq did and figure out his value based on the average. So... from 1992-2011 the FG% was collectively .477 Shaqs carreer FG% is .582 (582x5)/477 = 6.1 He’s 1.1 above average in FG% through his entire career. I’m curious how his stats as a whole would be laid out if this were done for all of his stats against the average, then all of his stats were evened out across the board.

Pretty neat video. Never followed basketball much, but I found this video pretty interesting. I've been a fan of Chart Party for a while, and while this video is different, I certainly wouldn't say it's "worse and not-as-good". It's certainly not Chart Party, but it's not bad. Anyways, if having this series means getting to watch more stuff with Jon Bois and his charts and graphs (which make both sports and statistics interesting to me), that makes it pretty good in my book.

Did SB also adjust the teams that now have extra wins, or just the Lakers who have extra losses? Probably wouldn't change too much in the standings, but i don't know if the standings were close enough to drop Shaq's team success

Tim Duncan went 30 for 158 in 3-point percentage in his career. I’m just saying this because I love Tim Duncan.

The Shawshank Inception 30 for 158 is not a percentage.
