How can trees help in the fight against climate change? Dig into the efforts to rebuild damaged ecosystems and reduce carbon emissions.
--
Today humanity produces more than 1,400 tons of carbon every minute. To combat climate change, we need to reduce fossil fuel emissions, and draw down excess CO2 to restore the balance of greenhouse gases. Like all plants, trees consume atmospheric carbon through photosynthesis. So what can trees do to help in this fight? Jean-François Bastin digs into the efforts to restore depleted ecosystems.

Its cool and all, but pocket money doesnt last forever. Dont forget to invest in yourself before you invest in the rest, or itll all be meaningless super fast if you run out of money to keep doing it because you over did it. You can plant 100 trees this year and never be able to plant more, or manage it all and be able to plant only 50 trees, but can do it every year. Most of your money on planting sounds great, but its not.

The video brings up an interesting point without actually saying it explicitly: No number of trees can ever restore Earth's previous carbon balance, because they don't destroy carbon or carbon dioxide, only store it while alive. The carbon in their remains can get stored deeper underground on geological timescales, but not on timescales that are meaningful for us as a civilization. Meanwhile, we are digging up coal and oil which has been storing carbon from life from hundreds of millions of years ago, and re-releasing it into the atmosphere. No number of natural trees could ever contain the collective carbon from eons of past life.

@@ThePlayerOfGames The glorification of the Amazon as the earth's lungs is very misleading and could be dangerous. According to science, the Amazon contributes 6% of the earth's oxygen and if we were to lose the Amazon completely, you would hardly notice the difference in oxygen supply. Correct information is always empowering. If it's more oxygen the earth needs, there are plant species that produce the most oxygen growing elsewhere which isn't necessarily the Amazon.

@@missdrey954 The difference in 6% oxygen saturation is the difference between feeling normal and able to do fitness and feeling light-headed at rest if you have existing conditions or feeling faint under heavy exertion Ultimately, the Amazon is being burned to fuel the fires of capitalism. @@ThePlayerOfGames The same way you're trusting this science is the same way you should trust the science that says you won't notice. I also don't think you understood what Augustin and I were saying which essentially is, people are misinformed. I would like to point out again that I said if it is more oxygen the world needs, we need to be focusing more on the sea and where the other 24% of oxygen supply comes from which I'm sure most people, myself included aren't really sure. This is by no means not saying, let's not save the Amazon forest because there are so many other reasons why the Amazon is vital but, I repeat, people should be informed accordingly because misinformation can be dangerous. For example, if more people knew that most of their oxygen comes from the sea, do you not think there would be more effort to save the ocean? Noone is saying don't save the Amazon, I am saying inform people accordingly because the more people know, the better position they are in to act. It's like how long we've been misinformed that trees will solve the carbon problem when actually planting trees is just creating a carbon sink which is a temporary solution.

“Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” ― Anonymous Greek Proverb
@liamvanvel1996

the real origin of the proverb - a volume of moral writing by a quaker in 1951. The aphorism then trickles through popular magazines, changing as it goes. Ronald Reagan uses it in 1983. But it seems to become a “Greek proverb” only in the hands of US congressmen in 1993. The Trueblood book was printed in 1951, earlier than any reference I can find. And on p.58 we read our quote: A man has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when he plants shade trees under which he knows full well he will never sit.

Where drylands have been transformed into forests by intensive tree planting a warming effect has been observed. Arid areas are light coloured and reflect the heat from the sun, whereas trees are dark and absorb heat. This quality is known as 'albedo'. It happens in the Arctic when ice melts exposing dark ocean which absorbs more heat and so speeds up the rate of melting. With the best of intentions we do have the potential to make things worse.

@TheOriginalFlowerdough
@TheOriginalFlowerdough 2 жыл бұрын
this INSTANTLY makes this sort of revitalization method MUCH easier as the use of one species can be somewhat mitigated, though sparse dotting of various trees to grow into an area through use of mycelium and time would create a FAR denser, more stable and overall strong forested ecosystem capable of supporting more life, this would make earth passable in the time it requires to make somewhere else minimally livable, so we can focus on getting that running then live more and more on that planet giving this one time to heal while using another planet for the less nature-friendly production

This year I planted 3 fruit trees on my property to add to my already 15 fruit and nut trees. I still have 6 evergreen trees to plant in autumn along with two flowering trees and I want to add 5 more fruit tree plus more bushes for my wild rabbits and birds to play in. Basically…..I want a mini forest. My dad says I’m a lot like my grandpa, while many neighbors hate to see weeds and wildlife eating their hard work I am fascinated by the wild flowers and bunnies that come to eat. My grandpa in Mexico used to pay to clean a spring every single year so wild animals and his pigs could play in the water, everyone called him a lunatic for paying and not using it himself but he said it was totally worth it. Unlike everyone else’s dry land tho, his was always overflowing with water and food. Dad said it was his generosity and that his lands thanked him back by never going dry. A lot of native teachings got lost and my grandpa learned the most from his uncle who just like him learned to love the land and respect the animals there. My parents and I want to make our home turn into a food forest, I hope we can also get solar panels soon too. A tree offers clean air, shade, food, shelter for animals and it’s beautiful so I don’t see problems with more….there was once so many more.

What happened in the Amazon last year was also blown way out of proportion and was more to do with politics than the environment. Did you even know there was more forest being burned in Africa at the time people were crying about the Amazon or that on average over the last decade less of the Amazon was burnt than normal or that China plants billions of trees each year(has for a very long time) that Canada plants hundreds of millions, as do many other countries. If anything trees may be part of the reason why the earth is warming due to the amount of water vapour they are adding to the atmosphere and because the work as heatsinks at night.

Very glad that this video covered that it's not simple enough to just plant trees. It matters what type of tree, if it's native and a summation of what the consequences might be. Lots of reforestation doesn't even work. Ecosystems are complicated and try to balance themselves out. Hands down, our biggest issue is fossil fuels, mainly through transportation and creation of products. We shouldn't of taken something that had been in the earth for thousands of years and just start burning it and putting it into the air. Actions always have consequences. Your personal carbon foot print is a fart in a hurricane compared to corporations and nations use for industries and transportation. While it helps to do your part, we're not going to get anywhere if the burden is on the general public, because we're not the ones making one use plastics, we're not the ones producing various luxury/superfelous goods, nor are we the ones forcing truck drivers and planes to carry all kinds of cargo. Biggest foot print is corporations by a long shot and they are more than happy to have people thinking their personal carbon foot print should be in spot light instead of them. Even if everyone reduced their usage, if corporations aren't forced to change, it won't help. Similar to the meat vs vegan debate. Farming is bad for the environment, whether you are farming veggies and fruits or meat. Vegan would save some time, but it doesn't at all fix the problem. Frutis and veggies are also extremely tempermental often and their transportation costs a lot in ways of emitting carbon. Getting an avocado is probably worse than buying local meat if it avocado isn't native.

Whoever made this video is awesome! Its so aesthetically pleasing but also educational,With increasing frequency of forest fires on a massive scale, growing demand in the lumber industry, and global urbanization of habitats, From a long-term perspective, we need to plant trees, and I hope more people can join in the activities of planting trees and contribute to the greening of the earth.

Yes great idea. I know there are hate toward china for his works. But it also present a very good way of growing forest without covering huge land. By growing trees in buildings. It is also practiced in Italy.

My father owns some parts of the forest and I would go with my family to there every time I was at my father's home, and still do. We make a fire every time we go there, and we eat sandwiches, sausages and hot chocolate. Sometimes we build huts from spruce ranches and we lay there while the fire is crackling and snow is falling. I wish I would see the northern lights one day while camping, we call them "fox' fires" or "fox' tails" (revontulet)
