In a Chinese family, hugging does NOT exist. The only physical contacts we got were canes, slippers, belts, and slaps from our parents. I've only experienced hugs twice in my 26 years of life. One was from one of my classmates in elementary school and the other one was from my former coworker before he left.

I suppose that explains a lot of my feeling of being unloved. I was never really hugged by my parents or anyone as a kid. I was basically never fit in and moved several times growing up. I've just learn to be alone. Because that I find it really hard to have good friendship. I keep ending up in awful friendship because I grown up with abuse. Btw verbal abuse can really take it's toll on people just as much if not more than physical abuse. But I guess some people that's got in this world and they wonder why so many shooting happen.

Anyone who has lived in a family that sees you not by love but by your worth in the family, i.e. how useful you are to the family, have it worse when it comes to getting into relationships, be it friend or significant other. I've been there, and it's not always great. I'd get berated in the family because I didn't do something right and any form of affection given to me feels weird like I don't know what to do or respond. Of course, it depends on some people but this is just through experience.

It is difficult being very affectionate with hugs and playful teasing when your friends are very much not liking hugs and being teased. Though, except for some neurological conditions I think it mostly has to do with them being shy/introverted and being afraid of the embarrassment over if a hug lasts too long or such making them not want it. When people aren't used to hugging platonically they feel awkward doing it but it surely is a thing you can get used to especially because it is so good for you!
