When I lived in Amarillo still I had started a Cinco de Mayo party one year after returning from the George Paul Memorial Bull Riding in Del Rio Texas, having had spent most of the off time across the river in Acuña. The 1st one held in my backyard with approximately 12 people. By the 5th year I hired a local musician, a fantastic talent, Andy Chase Cundiff for $100 an hour to play my newly built backyard open air bar made primarily of scrap wood and pallets with about 40 people. I hired him for 2 hours; he was having such a good time, excellent on-site cooked food and drink, he stayed an extra hour no charge. By my 10th Cinco de Mayo celebration I/we had made T-shirts, and had a few other local musicians want to come play just to play after and along with Andy in my newly expanded backyard beer garden with roughly 75 people. In another 2 years we had largely outgrown my backyard moving to a friend's property just outside of town with 3.5 acres and a pond, close to 100 folks. By the 15th year I had gotten with a local Boys & Girls Club and made it a fundraiser. That's when things really started rolling. Still a private party it had grown to a weekend with 5 different musical acts including Andy, donating his time for the charity as all musicians did at this point, many commercial donations such as free Porta Potties, and we'll over 150 folks in attendance. By the 20th year we had added a barbecue completion, great fun; but after 20 years I was tired and retired Captain Rich's Gringo Cinco as it had become know and advertised on T-shirts, word of mouth and some PSAs; with close to 200 in attendance over the weekend. When I'm home (Amarillo) I still run into folks that had been to one of my parties and tell me of the blast they had. It's a good feeling when they turn and holler at their friends, "hey this is the guy I was telling you about!". Maybe when I move back home in a few years I'll have to just start another one, I hope Andy will be available; what would you charge me Otis (non fundraiser)?

I had a once-a-month concert series at my house in Harrisburg PA until covid shut it down. The space seats 40+ and there's a bar in the back room. We've had jazz, celtic, a string quintet, bluegrass and rock bands. My favorite was the Hot Club of Philly featuring a guest appearance by Howard Alden. Good times and great people. Everyone who's ever played here has had a good experience and love the room and its acoustics. If a musician is on a tour I give him or her a bedroom and meals, or put them up at a bed and breakfast down the street. I'm a working (not touring) musician myself so I take care of my fellow players. Well, covid is over, so I'm starting it up again. I really appreciate Otis's videos from his unique and humble perspective.

A few years ago, local friends arranged for Spencer Bohren to do a house concert for 15 close friends. It was intimate, & outstanding. Spencer was fighting a health issue that eventually he succumbed to. RIP peace Spencer. Your works stay alive in my library & heart. Otis, if ever your schedule would permit, we’d love to have you with us. We’re in Southeast MO between St.Louis & Memphis, right all the Mississippi River. You have my email. Should any interest arise, just contact me. We can work out details & requirements to make it happen. All my best to Amy & you.

Great post Otis. Five years ago I was about to turn 70 and I’m a big Tom Russell fan so I was talking about Tom one evening and my son-in-law said “why don’t you get him to play here at the house?” My response was “that would be great” but I was thinking “fat chance.” Unbeknownst to me, my son-in-law went and e-mailed Tom and got a response from Tom’s wife. Long story short, we got Tom to do a concert on our back yard stage a few months later when he had an open night on his way from a gig in Ferndale California to the Cowboy Festival in Genoa Nevada. We had about 100 friends attend. Some said I should have charged them to off- set Tom’s fee but I said “no” the Concert and the fee were my birthday present to myself. No regrets, I’ve seen Tom play many times in California and Nevada but having him play in my backyard in Amado City was something I’ll never forget. I’d do it again but I’d probably charge my friends this time.

Not a house show or anything, but do remember seeing the late great Richie Havens at the local community college a while back. ... Was unexpected and a true pleasure to witness. If my memory is correct, the connection/reason it happened was a guy associated with Cape Cod Community College knew Mr. Haven's on a personal level. ... Kinda separately, but now that I'm thinking on it - There's a solid amount of places upon Cape Cod MA that host shows. ... Cotiut Center of Arts, Payomet Performing Arts Center, The Music Room, Barnstable Performing Arts, & at least a couple more. ... Those ones are just off the top of my head. .... 🤔 Hey, might be something for a fella like yourself to look into Mr. Otis. ... Good amount of small places all within minimal traveling range. ... LoL, actually might be something you've already done before? I'm a more recent fan through KZfaqville, & even took me a little bit before realizing you're a professional artist 😂🤣😂🤣. ... Is what it is. ... Just a fellow music lover & no intended disrespect. Do hope to see you get down in person one of these days. ... Love that Mother Jones upload of yourself playing. Alright, I've rambled on long enough. .... Thanks as always for your time & efforts. Always a calming watch & well worth the while 🙏👍😃.

We have them here in Boulder. Last year we did a new Beaujolais concert playing French music and then tasted the new wine. It was a ball. This was another home with a huge room, beautiful piano in great shape. I hope it happens again this year. We're also a town with small theaters. Yeah, we saw Bb King and Etta James at Red Rocks a few years back before they left us. That was very special, but otherwise, f*ck Ticketron and >$200 ticket prices.

Sometimes they call a smaller bar/restaurant bar Concert a House Concert to give a feel on the size, and a call some with more an open place to play upstairs, a Barn Concert as a bigger but more informal style of concert in my area but not all do this, more the places out of town that have a few types of concerts/live music. I could have seen Corb Lund this way once in the Black Hills. Ooh, I wish I was still living in Wisconsin, Eau Clare is not to far from Madison/Middelton area only about 45 min to 1.5 hours depending on season if the waterpark crowd was there and weather. I lived in Madison/Middleton area right across from Lake Mendota from 2 until age 12 or from 1991 until end of 2000. If I still lived there, I would go to see that concert.

Otis, becoming a Bottle Rockets fan I saw on their website they were on tour and asking if there was anyone interested in hosting a House Concert in a town near where they were touring. I had no idea these were happening. Turns out someone was hosting a House Concert an hour from where I live. Saw them there twice and Sarah Borges and Eric Roscoe Ambel also played there. Wish I would have heard about this long time ago.

For those who cannot afford to add on to their homes, think about getting some friends together & renting an event venue. We used to rent new ones extremely reasonable when we held auctions 15 years ago. Now there’s been a huge influx of mom & pop event centers where I live, in the last few years & there’s more venues than there are events. Keep in mind that if you want to have beer & liquor, the cost will probably more than double.
