I agree people should enjoy their hair. I personally enjoy trying to get it as healthy as possible. Some people love dying their hair, relaxers and heat styling, and that's fine. Do whatever makes you happy. At some point, I may decide to cut it all off again because it's my hair and my business! 💇🏾‍♀️

I agree with you totally. I’m not a professional but I have been doing hair ever since I was 15 and I think length and density does matter but the price should be addressed before so clients know before booking a treatment. Therefore if she was told 200$ then she should not have been told a different price afterward. That was on the cosmetologist, she will learn next time find out your client hair texture before giving price.😊

I agree. Professionally speaking the cosmetologist should have taken the L. Maybe mentioned her mistake just in case the client returns wanting the same price, but she should have kept the quoted price.

I agree! My Gen Z son’s female friends have never had relaxers and likely never will. They rock their natural hair! I’m so proud that they love their beautiful hair and could care less if others don’t. I’ve learned so much self-love about my natural hair from watching them. It’s priceless ❤

I understand why cosmetologists would charge more for length and density. I think the customer should be made aware of an extra fee before they book their appointment.

I understand as well. I feel like the area we all need some help around is charging for texture. That one is deep.

I'm not for discrimination, but if a stylists knows they can't do or has a bias against certain textures, I'd rather know before booking with them. I think as an entrepreneur, they should be able to charge what they want, but they shouldn't start a client's hair after quoting one price when it's gonna be another. That woman should have known before the stylist started that she'd owe more that was orginally quoted.

Way back in the day.. my mom did my hair. Pressed and curl. When my grandmother got sick.. I was sent to the salon. Miss Sara.. To be precise😉. I had density, length, and I swear in my head... It was a losing battle😎. Miss Sara called my mom told her "come get this child".. .... So yeah.. I get it!!

I think it’s perfectly fine for stylists to charge for length and density because it takes more labor and uses more product. I don’t even mind paying the extra. But like you said, good business practice is to set the price expectations up front. I feel like that’s the real issue.

I am a Natural Hair Care Specialist. It hurts my heart to charge people extra based on what they can't change. I can't give you a discount because you have a kid. Children actually tend to have more, denser hair and can be difficult to work with because they can't sit still or I have to bend over and hurt my back to do what I need to do. The same goes for people with really tangled or tangle prone hair, flaky scalps, more locs than the average person, longer hair, etc. The fact of the matter is that it takes longer to do, and we need to be fairly paid for our time. Should we standardize the prices to reflect the variances in time needed to complete the service? Maybe, but then I feel bad charging that much for the people with less hair, who aren't needing 3 or more shampoos, etc. What do y'all think? Also I feel like the way that stylist added the charge was completely wrong. That should have been communicated well before the end of the service. And I feel like $200 is enough to cover someone with thick, butt length hair, but I'm not telling anybody what they can and can't charge.
@LaToyaEbonyHair

Thank you for your perspective. Ultimately, a business owner can charge whatever they want. In that moment the stylist probably should have taken the L for her mistake and charged her what she quoted. She could have made the correction for future visits, but the way she did it probably lost her a new customer.

That is correct. I'm a cosmetologist of many many years. To be clear, if there is an extra charge for the service, I will always share that in the consultation, explain why and that gives the client the option to use my services or not. In my career being upfront and clear of "why" is key....no surprises. If something else comes up during the service, which it can, outside of what I share the dollar amount would be or potentially be, I will share with them at that time as well. If they have it cool....if its something that can wait....cool, if its something I feel they need, I may eat the cost or they hit be back on next service if they return. There are times I will have to charge a little more because of the amount of hair, only because it can take much longer to service and use more product. Typically when I express this to my client, they understand. The client knows the dollar amount or potential dollar amount before I perform their service. Ultimately my goal is optimal hair care for that client and to earn that clients trust so they will return. ☺

I think if there is going to be an additional price, just say so. Then the client can be be prepared. But the cost change without notice would be an issue for me too. Just be upfront with it.

Yes, I agree that the client should be aware that a length, texture, and / or density fee may apply. It would be nice to receive a courtesy at first visit just so we will know where we stand. Besides, what's considered thick or long or even extra handling textures may differ among stylists/ salons.

For the lady that was charged extra for length and density, she absolutely should have been told about that charge before the service started. I agree that her hair wasn't long enough for a length charge, and to me, it looked to be medium density. IMHO a length charge shouldn't start until somewhere around the armpit to bra-strap for a basic shampoo, condition, blow dry, and silk press. That charge is the very reason I don't go to salons. For my length, it just costs more than I'm willing to pay when I can just jump in the shower and do it myself for the cost of shampoo, conditioner, and styler.

Specifically as it relates to braided styles, charging for length and density is definitely a new age stylist thing and I don’t like it. If you don’t charge less for thin hair, short hair, or small heads… I don’t think you should do the opposite. And before y’all come for me, I braided hair for 20 years. My mom is a licensed stylist and my sister is a stylist… none of us did/do upcharge for length or density. When it comes to braids, charging more for length is non sensical… long hair is easier to grip, no short hairs to tuck, use less braiding hair, and the braids typically have to braided to the end anyway so it doesn’t matter if it’s natural hair or braiding hair! But pricing is so out of control with everything now days. 60% of inflation is just people raising their prices under the guise of inflation. People are just taking advantage of other people. Having said ALL of that, I agree with the sentiment that people will pay for what they want so if you have other charges they should be clearly stated in advance.
@LaToyaEbonyHair
@LaToyaEbonyHair Жыл бұрын
Wow, I did not know people were getting charged extra for length to get braids. That seriously makes no sense to me either. Re: inflation. Yes! Some do it just because others are doing it. Some do it b/c their own bills raised due to inflation. At the end of the day consumers pay for inflation. Most businesses just pass their extra cost to the customer.

I don't understand this charging for parting. Don't do braids then! You need to part for neat braids (that's what you're being paid for) - especially BOX braids. And you should definitely mention a density and length charge beforehand. It's that charging for 4c hair that causes me to side-eye people.

I just find that length and density can become « eye of the beholder ». Is long hair, past shoulder length? Is dense hair more than the low density person that sat in the chair before ?
