What if new teacher preparation and ongoing professional development programs used incarcerated youth as “thought partners” to help overcome the challenges of teaching reading? Hilderbrand has achieved something few others have accomplished: He
has led five different types of urban schools with difficult learning environments to achieve significant improvements. He has participated in three major reform efforts to turn around schools. Hilderbrand has directed educational programs in the City of Philadelphia’s
six major correctional facilities and also designed two high school models for the expelled student population. Hilderbrand’s most notable
accomplishment was the creation of a successful school model for incarcerated juveniles in the Philadelphia correctional facilities. His book,
Unlocking Potential: Organizing a School Inside a Prison, examines urban education from a perspective that is grossly underrepresented in
national debates, namely, incarcerated students. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

A sobering approach. Bringing the reality of severely inadequate reading instruction to the conscious of aspiring teachers before their first lesson would result in irreplaceable professional development.

Wow! Painful reality, but the truth needs to be heard so that changes can be made. Thank you for your commitment to our children! As a former elementary teacher, I only had one course in reading instruction which barely scratched the surface. I, too, believe that partnering with incarcerated youth for teacher preparation program would be beneficial.

This is the conversation begging to be shared! I am delighted to know that we have finally gotten to a real solution, "thought partners"! So authentic and necessary in a million ways. I am proud to know that you are on the horizon as a news day dawns. I ask the question always, "Did Teddy fail school, or did SCHOOL fail Teddy?" Delighted to still be in the land of the living and know that you are at the helm. Congratulations sir!

I am very inspired to think about the keen insights we can learn from incarcerated youth. It is imperative that we learn how to teach all students how to read, and effectively. Our students can not wait any longer. Thank you for this brilliant talk. This is giving me ideas as this is the area I will be studying in my doctorate. Thank you.

How do we really push the conversation forward with key metrics that duly reflect a cross-data analysis of "these" events, so we can collectively change the narrative both on paper, theocracy, and practicality? I appreciate how you handled this with an analytical and systemic concept, we need to do better, we can do better.

I love the idea. I work with young children and educators. I believe young children need to be exposed to emergent literacy skills and all teachers should receive training so they know what to teach. I worry when basic things like phonics, alphabet knowledge is not being taught.
