What is 3 Phase Electric Power?

A very quick explanation and demo of three phase electric power including how easy it is to make a 3 phase motor, and why it is so convenient for power transmission. Also covered is how a synchronous motor is essentially the same as synchronous generator, and how giant ones are used for power generation in hydroelectric and conventional power stations. I also show some photos I took of the generators at the Hoover Dam as a typical example.

I watch all your videos and it’s not just your knowledge but you also have a strong assemblage. Excellent all the way around

I love how the compass demonstrates the simplicity of the three phase induction motor hence it's presence in commercial and industrial applications where efficiency, reliability, and higher horsepower and torque from a given frame size than is possible with a single phase motor of the same rating, in fact above a certain horsepower I wanna say 15, motors are only manufactured in three phase.

Great video, loved the practical demonstrations. I enjoyed seeing that compass spinning up!

More great demonstrations. The Hoover Dam pics reminded me of a tour I took of the Lower Granite Dam in Washington State (in 1987 iirc). It was a self guided tour (back in the day, you could just wander in off the street and look around), so I initially skipped the dioramas and such and went straight to the turbine hall. I was a bit disappointed in the scale of things, assuming that the lowest cylindrical object in the stacks of cylinders were the turbines, followed by the generators and a bearing on top. But, when I did get to the dioramas, I found that the bit on top was just a grease injector for the bearing and that the turbine itself was below the floor of the hall. That helped put things in perspective and the generators (six 135 MW units), which were about 40' in diameter and 20' high, were now suitably impressive. The displays also included a piece of "wire" (1 inch by 4 inches in cross section) used to wind the generators.

This is by far the most easy to understand introduction to three phase power. Great work ! 👍

Great demonstration so much better than graphics. Retired now but miss the screaming of a 500 hp three phase motor starting up and the ping as it goes delta.

When you were discussing the high voltages used for lighting in large buildings, I thought of another application: lights throughout a section of interstate highways, including the high tower lights often I’ll observe turning on in large numbers at once. I take it the controller would have some large contractors; there must be quite a bit of filtering to reduce RF emissions from the sudden switch of high voltage.

Nice work as usual, kinda forgot to mention that adding one more wire, (versus two) lets you deliver almost double? the power!

Interesting that the bulb apparently dims at a lower frequency. Or is that the camera? I thought tungsten has a positive thermal resistivity. Then you have radiative cooling between pulses...

Great demonstration! I really liked the compass being used as the rotor. I never really thought about 347VAC, we typically have 277VAC on a 480V system in the US. I do know of some 575V systems still operational as well though it does not seem very common these days.

I wondered what the 347 volt stuff was about but never had time to research it. Wish I had 3 phase power at my house. Could you comment on the motor starting and reliability implications of single phase versus three phase motors? Thank you for another very informative and useful video, Dr. Jones! Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2024.
