The capacitor is used to direct the high frequencies and resist the low frequencies.
The capacitor consists of layers of electrical conductive material but insolated from one another wounded around in a coil, where a voltage potential is encountered, this is called a dielectric layer. This storage of electrons causes a charge to be loaded sort of a very small fast battery.
Therefore, the capacitor conducts lower frequencies through the larger it is, so the capacitor must not be too big to protect a tweeter.
If only one capacitor is used in series, it is called a first-order high pass filter or 6dB per octave high pass filter. If you want to filtrate more efficiently, you may want to insert a coil after the capacitor and connect it to minus / ground. This will cause the coil to short circuit lower frequencies to minus. This type of filter is known as second order filter or 12dB per octave filter.

Thank you, this is exactly what I needed to continue my project. I have a very old Webcor speaker/amplifier, and I ran across caps separating the mid from the bass speaker, and separating the mid from the tweeter. The one to the tweeter was 2uF, and the one between the bass and mid was 4.0uF. They are huge and old, and test double their spec. Hearing the differences of the caps you demonstrated , and mentioning that they can also add protection to the smaller speakers by filtering out the deep tones, was a very nice, practical example, of how these devices work. I cant find a 2.0uF nor a 4.0uF, so I am using a 2.2 and a 4.7 respectively, and they are tiny in comparison.

My MIT2 vintage Cables, are just additional crossover elements (aka network synthesis filters R L C) in a box mounted directly to the speaker cables. Eh? Who knew. Anyway, I'm now prepared to figure out a 4th order Linkwitz-Riley filters. That was hard to imagine previously.

Hi UrbanSmash SoulJah. Capacitors are used in speakers for a number of reasons. The most significant is to prevent bass and midrange frequencies from entering the tweeter. The value of the capacitor which is given in microfarads or "uf" (the video has a guy with a 2.2uf, a 10uf and a 3.9uf) determines the frequency of sound for which capacitor filters out. The smaller the value, the higher the frequency.

I am going to build my stereo speaker box, using the vintage Isophone 10x6 (oval) full range speaker and the vintage tweeter. The sensitivity is more than 92dB and the impedance is 4Ohms. In the first order cross over (only using a capacitor) , what are the caps choices , can I use between full range & tweeter? which one will be the perfect sounding? and safe one? Also please clarify for: Can I use a 16Ohms or 8Ohms tweeter with this 4 Ohms full range? If so , what cap should be used? Dear friend, Kindly explain in detail for all my doubts, I need your valuable advice. Thank you and best regards.

I was just wondering because these 3way speakers do not use a crossover but there are three (two?) capacitors to separate each driver. do the capacitors wear out over time and need to be replaced? (the foam on the woofers looks good) EDIT: opened the speakers up they have replaced the woofers with visaton w200. ohhh well..

Great vid on basic filtration. Do you have any advice on instrumental speakers? I’m trying to build a bass cabinet that is 4ohms total with a 15” speaker and a 2” horn driver. The idea is to use the horn to pick up higher frequencies that the main speaker does not respond to. I’m guessing I’ll need a filter like you have here so that the horn only works above a certain frequency. Is there a type of capacitor that I should use? I’ve read about polypropylene, electrolyte and film and foil. I’ve read the polypropylene is best for home speakers, but am unsure on what is best for musical instruments. Thanks!

Hi Bro, Could you please tell me the reason of Low volume of one of the Rear Speakers of my Creative Inspire 5200 5.1 speaker system connected to my Desktop PC? I have interchanged the speaker by connecting another speaker to the Rear Left. That speaker fires normally, but the problematic speaker gives only low volume when connected to the Rear Left jack of the Sub-woofer. What might be the reason of the Speaker firing with low volume when connected to the Rear Left. Tested another speaker in the same Rear Left jack but it gives normal full volume. Only one speaker gives the low volume. Please guide me how can I repair that problematic speaker. If need be, I can open that problematic speaker. But what to do after opening it? What size cross over is needed to take bass out of a 12inch subs to use as highs kent
@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk Жыл бұрын
There is no set size for that, it all depends on how much you are going for. Subwoofer filters are typically 80Hz to 120Hz at 12dB pr octave (2nd order) and to calculate the actual component sizes you need the woofers impedance. But for a fullrange speaker 2, 3 or 4 way the crossover frequency can be anything fra 100 til 2500Hz as a crossover frequency. If you are talking car-stereo and you just want to make it sound better I will suggest an 8,2mH inductor in series or larger

What you are attempting takes a much more calculated effort to get right. The video is just showing the concept of what the components are doing. To make a crossover right you need the thiele-small parameters of each driver + impedance and frequency response. Then you need the box volume and if there is a bass reflex port. So you can make a calculation for its response so that in the end you can adjust the tonal balance with the filter, likely dampening is needed on both tweeter and mid. This is just the brass tacks and I have an ebook that takes you through the most essential parts of a design, but its currently in my mother tongue Danish and I probably won't have it translated until next year. But I have this little speaker calculator I made as free download bekent.dk/blog/speakercalc-gratis-hoejtaler-beregnings-program/ but you will still need to adjust the tonal balance with dampening (resistors) but the calculator will get close with the filtering.

No it cannot, however using higher orders just degrades the phase response, a perfectly matched 2nd HP and LP will have maximally flat amplitude and superior phase response compared with higher orders, and 1st order is not steep enough.
@tomkocur
@tomkocur 5 жыл бұрын
What does "degrades phase response" even mean? You don't hear phase, you just need the phase of both drivers to match around the crossover frequency (that's what crossover design is about). And 1st order not steep enough? Steep enough for what? Sorry, but what you say is not true, it's always individual and it always depends on how well the crossover is designed.
@suzesiviter6083
@suzesiviter6083 5 жыл бұрын
Tomas Kuruc: You can hear phase between two drivers, for instance if you wire one of your speaker black-red, red-black; the bass response will drop. That's why most subwoofers have a phase control to match the subwoofer phase with that of your loudspeakers(some can also switch from 2nd order(To match with a closed box speaker), to 4th order for a ported design). So when I say 'degrades' phase response I mean phase matching between tweeter and mid changes during the transition region; causing an unpleasant sound. First order crossover result in the tweeter and mid playing the same frequencies over a wider range of frequencies than 2nd or 4th order, ideally you want an almost brick-wall cut-off and roll-on; however such filters have another problem; that of phase matching between tweeter and mid(During the transition region), Thiele and Small; the loudspeaker scientists determined that the best filters for phase matching whilst giving a steep enough response were 2nd Butterworth (Q=0.707) and 4th Order. I could go into more detail; but this is pretty well known in the industry, as well as electronic students with at least an HND qualification.

@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk 3 жыл бұрын
hi Mike, its important that its a bipolar type, secondly you need low hysteresis but if you buy them from a place that sells speaker drivers you don't have to look for it. Lastly for a tweeter I will recommend some kind of film capacitor and avoid electrolytic capacitors. In the realm of film capacitors, a solid choice is MKP the full name Metallized polypropylene capacitors. So that's good fundamentals, once you move into high-end hifi it moves further than that.

The correct answer in this case; The 10uf capacitor he has is an probably a polyester capacitor. The 2.2uf is polypropylene . Polyester capacitors are smaller. The 3.9uf is and Electrolytic capacitor and these are smaller still for a given capacitance Polypropylene capacitors are generally higher quality. You can buy polypropylene capacitors from Ebay. The CBB60/ CBB61 polypropylene capacitors from China are inexpensive and are very good quality. The CBB60 and CBB61 capacitors are labeled "motor run" or "motor start" and are made for washing machines and air conditioners etc. However, these capacitors work perfectly in loudspeaker crossovers. Parts Express also has a wide range of inexpensive and good quality capacitors for loudspeakers. They also have a plethora of excellent loudspeaker parts and loudspeaker kits. The Parts Express Forum is a great place for a beginner with any questions regarding loudspeakers.

Thats a very different subject than the video, if you are running the amp and perhaps a Bluetooth board on the same supply you likely have ground loop. For that, I recommend a power insulator which is a DC to DC converter that separates ground to the signal board.

I took.one of my floor speakers to the shop because the tweeter wasn't working. A week later I found a replacement tweeter that worked, bought it and gave it to the guy at the shop. He calls me a few days later and said the capacitor for old tweeter needed to be replaced. I'm wondering why, if the replacement speaker I bought and gave him works why would he not want to use that rather then buying a new capacitor for old tweeter?
@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk 3 жыл бұрын
The capacitor in the crossover is a different component than the tweeter itself, so if the capacitor is defective it wont help to use a different tweeter

If its just a single capacitor in series: F=1/(R*C), where R=8, re-arranging gives: C=1/(F*R), BUT this will be a simple 1st order, ideally you want 2nd order on both tweeter and mid so they blend together. Always use an AC rated Polypropylene (100v ok or higher), people use electolytics but they are rubbish for audio.

ndeco, there is no standard value for mf, it depends at what frequency you wish to cut off the tweeter; hence the equation.Tell me a frequency and I will let you know, but it wont be accurate since I dont know what tweeter you have.

hi there can you help me?, I want to build a full range tree speaker with 2 mid drivers and one tweeter, does the tweeter have to be the same wattage as the mid drivers? if not how do I limit the wattage to the tweeter?
@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there, automatically the power is less at higher frequencies in the music, so depending on the crossover that you use the power to the different drivers will be different. With a typical crossover in a 2 way system as you are describing and most hit musik played on it, you will have have about 15 to 25% of the sound in the tweeter. What drivers do you have in mind? theres more to it than so, also you sensitivity can make a big difference here, lets say you have a sensitivity of 90dB on your tweeter and 100W rms, then you will have the exact same energy in a tweeter with 93dB and 50W rms. After is your resonans frequency the lower the more you can push it.

@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk 6 жыл бұрын
You need a custom filter for that, no standard filter is going to make this work like it should. I would say 2 way 18dB pr oct (third order) butterworth, and then it needs impedance correction on the woofers and lpad approx 12dB damping
@highhat5229

thanks buddy, should I use a crossover calculator? or do some research and not use a calculator? also do I need a attenuator if I'm using a mixer?
@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk 6 жыл бұрын
the lpad circuit is instead of an attenautor, so you could use that instead just got to make sure that is can eat all that power, 12dB is basically everything. A calculator is good just as long as you do do impedans correction (zobel filter) and find a calculator as well

A bullet tweeter for sure needs a capacitor or a full crossover, are you sure it isnt pre-soldered on the tweeter, or maybe you already have a crossover in your speaker. I typically do 5KHz crossover either 2nd or 3rd order on most bullet tweeters, or else you would need a 10 pack of voice coils

Overall a good demo but be careful with the narration as it was a bit confusing, at 1:35 it sounds like you say 2 point 0 mico farads (for the big black one), and then the 2nd one you say 10 microfarads and "a little smaller capacitance"... that makes no sense, if i go full screen it looks like the black one could be labelled as22µf so that would then make sense.

Capacitor does not work comparable to resistance - it is too simplified. Capacity inputs reactance to circiut which results depending on frequency in lowering the amplitude and secondly shifts the original phase of signal. That shift is source of bad sounding even when amplitudes are matched ok. That i why I do not advice everybody to DIY because without beeing aware about many things results are often worse than expected..
@AudioTalk
@AudioTalk 6 жыл бұрын
First off everybody has to start somewhere, and the video is showing the change in crossover frequency and nothing about amplitude and the impedance does rise after the crossover frequency, thats how it works. And yes there is fase shift, but in a first order filter its only 90 degrees, and yes that its reactance govern by the charge curve of the capacitor, but thats not a good laymans explanation, that is a look out I am smart explanation, because if you know what reactance is, you are unlikely to look for answers in video with this title . This video can save lots of tweeters for the ones there is having fun with speakers.
