G'day Van fam.
This week we have re-united with the kids and continue our journey around Australia. We leave Perth, headed East to the wheat belt of southern WA. We head straight to the small town of Kulin, where the counsel run caravan park has a unique pricing strategy allowing its patrons to pay what they think is fair.
Hope you enjoy this weeks ep and thanks for watching!

Hi totally agree with the price of caravan parks. They are out of control, charging way too much for what they offer. We like so many others do not go to the big cities or the bigger Caravan Parks, we like so many others stay in a smaller towns, where the Carran Parks offer more for a far less than their bigger counterparts. If Caravan Parks would understand if they charged a more responsible fee for a bit dirt or just a charge somebody's batteries they would fill up their caravan parks more Often. I have spoken to so many campers who are saying this very same thing.

Yes, it's so true. We were just talking to our neighbours last night. They went to go to another C.P with friends, the place was empty. They priced up going in and they said $75 each (both families with 3 kids so the parent tax made it much more). So they walked away. They said if it were 50 bucks, they both would of gone in there and the place makes $100 from its empty spots, instead it stayed empty. But I will also say, we are staying out at a farm camp right now for $10 a night just out of town. There are about 5 C.Ps in town and they all charging around $70. The C.Ps all look pretty full while there's only 3 of us out here at the off grid farm stay. So people keep going to the the C.Ps, even when there are cheaper options, and so the C.P's keep charging what they charge.

It’s the ‘parent tax’ that grates. Rock up with 2 adults and it might be $50 and then add 3 kids @$10 each and it jumps to $80. I get there’s extra usage for showers etc. but a 60% mark up? The CPs can fill their parks with cabins for all I care.

You are way more generous than me as I would not have paid $30....but then again, I am a free camper-oholic 🙂 One thing that did concern me is Mels explanation that she thought it was worth $10 per adult and $5 per child.........I think we need to stop thinking this way and it should be a per site fee only (with maybe a limit of 6 people) Once we start accepting the "parent tax" as a normal cost, then you can bet there will be more "taxes" to follow. PS - the arrow is not pointing at a thumbnail.....editor error...lol
@SvedosTrippin

I do agree with your thoughts on the per child fee vs per site fee, something we will be more careful about if we talk about this in the future as we very much HATE the parent tax as well.

We stayed at Kulin, we paid $30 also. Amazing place. We really enjoyed our time in the WA wheat belt. We spent 9 months in WA and it has some very pricey caravan parks and camps. In contrast our 4.3 months in Queensland was cheaper for sure. When you combine the long distances in remote WA it means your fuel bill is going to be big. Then combine that with steep camps and caravan parks fees.

A friend of mine is in Pambula Vic , got quoted $145.00 a night at a caravan park on the beach. Ending up staying at a another caravan park nearby but slightly inland for $45.00 a night. Both powered and in peak season.
@SvedosTrippin
@SvedosTrippin 6 ай бұрын
Yeah $145 a night for a patch of dirt with a power supply and a tap. It's getting bloody ridiculous. A motel in Australia will cost that and they provide bricks and morter, linen and have cleaning fees. And $150 a night in many asian countries will be a penthouse sweet. Someone's got to rain these C.P's in.
@Roberto.Giuseppe
@Roberto.Giuseppe 6 ай бұрын
@@SvedosTrippin Yep totally agree. Its like there is a competition who can charge the most! I don't understand why people pay these crazy fees. We do have a choice, there are a lot of rec reserves and some parks that are reasonable and fair. Stay away from these expensive parks charging these high fees and for certain, the price will drop.

$30 is fair. Some are out of control I have heard of some at over $120 per night. Stupid part is some people pay it. That's nearly $1700 for 2 weeks. I'd expect a air conditioned cabin with linen service and meals for that price.

Caravan parks are EXPENSIVE..And to be honest, the expense does not reflect value . Some parks are asking $80 a night to park your van. That is absolutely rediculas. If councils are smart, EV Stations would have 240 v. 🤔 and fresh drinking water stations. Then they would cater for the traveller. Who puts money into the economy just as much as the next guy. If not more so. Repairs. Food stocks. Fuel. Overpriced snacks. And then they are gone. All we want to do is see the beautiful country that we live in. Is that a crime. NO, it means we love our country. I think your $30 is more than fair
@SvedosTrippin
@SvedosTrippin 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for your support. And yes at anything over $60 its simply unaffordable for us and we will just avoid it and if the town doesn't offer anything (free camp, show grounds etc.) we simply can't afford to visit. Judging from feed back, that's the case for many, however many still show up and so the C.P's don't change.

yeah.... You are obviously in an expensive area. We have to avoid area's like that as we simply cant afford it. We are currently at off grid at a farm in a location that is other wise pretty expensive at $70+ for the C.P's. The off grid farm for us is $10 a night. As a result we can afford to stay here for longer and spend some money in the community, if this farm weren't here, we would have to move on in 1 or 2 days.
