I am a former chimney sweep. Out of all the calls we got to inspect water leaks in masonry chimneys I would estimate that more than 85% were due to the lack of a cricket.

If you used quality materials like lead it wouldn’t ever leak even it it held water . Crappy cheap shingles are what we put on sheds in uk .

You just need to elvate the mid section a bit to prevent the water to "sit", why would anyone build a whole seperate little roof behind a chimney to avoid that? Your "leveling" the top of your "cricket" just lower that to the point that the water cant "sit" and your good and the customer doesnt ask "what ugly abomination did you put behind my chimney".

many people express envy and admiration of their neighbors' houses, when the neighbor has a cricket. It's a good option if you don't want water coming into your living room.
