Just spoke to my therapist today and brought up how a stray round hit my household in Chicago. In that same timeframe, my father was at a Sam’s club while there was an active shooter. Long story short, growing up in Chicago and being deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan has definitely taught me how important preparation is. But my therapist had the audacity to hint that I am being paranoid and shouldn’t carry a firearm… I stood ground and told her that it’s better to have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it. Stay frosty boys!

I love listening these guys who have been operating for years. The level of detail that you get from Unit guys is fascinating. I watched a video of Larry Vickers (a couple of generations behind Kyle) and they both share the same detail (Larry was describing bolting a king-size mag-lite on a MP5 back in the day). Their parallel assessment and evaluation of a tool (in this case a red dot vs the mag-lite) really shows the level of investment these men had in their trade and the advancement of technology. We had a 1SG in 3rd Rangers (Pat Hurley, RIP) who had spent years in the Unit and returned to the Regiment. The man was a wealth of knowledge. He'd walk behind a young 20 year-old fire team leader clearing a room and drop these small pearls of wisdom that saved lives. Proud to be an American and proud of these men who stood the line for our freedom and our children's safety. Thanks to you too Shawn, for the same reasons, your podcasts are excellent. Sua Sponte.

Back in the day I used to EDC my Glock 22 un-chambered and I was able to successfully draw, rack, and hit one of my targets during a attempted robbery. When hindsight kicked in shortly after the incident I realized that the circumstances that allowed me to do so were one of a kind and very unique, and if it weren’t for those particular circumstances, then I probably wouldn’t be alive today. That’s the day that I started caring in one in the chamber.

You'll ask a question and then just shut up and let the person talk. You don't interrupt, even if the guest seems to go off topic, you just let them take the wheel. Love your platforms- genuine, honest, emotional and self-aware guests, stumbled upon tik tok and have watched everyone of them. I can relate on multiple levels; 10 years active duty Navy EW1 combat operations at sea 9545 LES/Law Enforcement Officer on shore. Separated-continued education, M.A. psychology and certified CPT provider for PTSD/Trauma-one of the first in the state (TX) in conjunction with the VA and community MH providers. Licensed Professional Counselor and opened the Office Military and Veterans Services at West Texas A&M University-Director from 2012-2022, now private practice clinical therapy. This episode struck me as it is exactly what I say to my wife about her EDC Sig 9, no use to you without one in the chamber, the activating event will not pause for you dig it out of the little bag in your big bag and rack one while coming up on target. Sorry this was so long, but really just wanted to say thank you, to you and your guest for sharing and hopefully helping others. I can say, I use some of the same methods in my practice, challenging beliefs, old habits, reality checking, etc. Great work, keep it up, and know that I have had the opportunity to parlay something from one of one of your platforms almost everyday for the past couple of weeks--meeting them were they are, right. Absolutely spot on interview. I think everyone who carries a weapon, as I do, should watch this interview. Particularly compelling was the “conversation with yourself” part. When I started carrying I found myself reflecting on the realities of the responsibility of possibly using deadly force. For me the imprimatur was I carry for three reasons; 1) to protect my life and the lives of my family, 2) to defend the lives of the innocent, and 3) to assist LEOs under assault. When I arrived at those rationales I realized that I had effectively removed the mystery of making a life altering decision. Great interview Shawn! Bravo Zulu shipmate.

I love these Delta guys. Very intelligent, articulate and matter of fact. I like to think I have a pretty good BS meter and when these guys speak it doesn't go off one bit. I just sit and listen closely and soak it in. Thanks for quality work Shawn.

This guy isn’t the best “public speaker” but he’s EXACTLY the type of human being I would pay good money to train me. Hes cool, he’s calm, he’s extremely introspective and he’s had all the experiences one needs to share his tactics with others. Can’t wait to watch this dude grow in this space should he choose to.

To me that's one of the things that just make him more endearing - he's just like me in that regard. Sometimes I have good, pertinent info to share but I'm not the best at knowing which words to use to impart it to others. But unlike me, he's chock full of good experience and he DOES manage to tell you what he wants you to know.

"If I take my gun out, my everyday carry gun, I'm killing someone...It's not there for me to de-escalate." Hot damn, some sobering words. I wish more people had this mindset and understood the implications of it. So great to have that reality check by a true professional who has the experience and understanding of the gravity of making such a decision.

Really liked when he talked about having that conversation on why we carry. My dad is a cop and he always stressed to me the consequences of using a firearm. I grew up with a perspective on the aftermath and damage that a firearm can cause because he wanted me to be safe and responsible when I'd go out in the woods with my 22.

When he brought up the need to have that conversation with yourself. It reminded me of the time my wife and I took a CCW class. The instructor brought up that very subject. My wife decided she couldn't live with herself having takin a life. So she has the permit, but doesn't carry a firearm. I on the other hand have decided that my or my families life is worth defending at all costs. Even if taking a life ruins me mentally.

I’m a firearms instructor and note many females make this same decision. Very few males. I not only highly the need for this conversation but that if you are not prepared to destroy a life in defense of your own, statistics show it will be used against you if you’re a female. Sad but true.

It should not be something that ruins you unless you’ve done something very wrong, taken a life that didn’t need taking.
@JIMBOBALOU
@JIMBOBALOU 8 ай бұрын
@@mouthbreather280 But studies show that even people who believed they were prepared mentally. Suffer tremendously after taking a life. It's very evident in veterans. Lots of veterans suffer from PTSD from war and killing. So what you said really has no merit.
@mouthbreather280
@mouthbreather280 8 ай бұрын
@@JIMBOBALOU I’m not arguing with you that’s case, I understand that is the reality. Nor does it take any merit from what I’ve said. I merely said it should not affect someone to justifiably defend their loved ones or themselves. A lot of people it does not, and they don’t lose a second of sleep over it. To those who it does, everyone handles stress differently. Some people are just weaker at it.

Kyle spitting 100% truth on EDC! I know people who won't carry with one in the pipe..i've told them that very thing "You'd be dead before you could identify the threat, pull, rack, present, and crack off a round". Train....it's what will make you comfortable carrying, clearing cloth, and presenting.

Dot on a pistol is no different than a dot on a rifle in terms of reliability. Guys said the same thing when dudes started running optics on their carbines, there's obviously levels of quality and durability depending on brand and price but with the options available today there's plenty that are absolutely reliable enough to trust on a go to gun.
@luckymanham302

It’s much different between a dot on a pistol and a dot on a rifle. A pistol dot rides back on forth on the slide subjecting it to much more than the recoil impulse from a rifle. A robust proven dot on a pistol is mandatory if you are gonna trust your life with it. A rifle is not nearly as hard on a red dot

Shawn, I love the way you didn’t bring in your expertise and allowed the tactical youth to explain his red dot views. That was so awesome. I also loved the discussion about the self talk concern taking a life. My saying has always been “ if you are ever involved in a self defense shooting, your life is going to change and not for the better.” That “mark on the soul” is heavy and you carry it no matter how you took the life in favor of your own. Great episode.

Love this interview. A lot of people feel and act as if they’re tougher because they have a firearm. If you don’t have any deescalation skills, then you don’t need a firearm. It’s the last resort.
