What is a Directed Independent Study (and Why Should I do it)?

Yes, you can often seek out a desired elective through DIS, as long as a teacher is available to sponsor it. Best of luck!

Hi Dr. Maiden. Thank you for your video. I am in a class right now, and we have to complete a Directed Individual Project, and I am clueless. I've done so much research and this is why I am at your video. How do I even get started? My instructor says I need to pick a topic, but how do I pick a topic on a topic that I don't know anything about? It is an Instructional Technology program, and we can evaluate instructional software applications, but she says we need to discuss the foundation knowledge upon which the software is rationalized. Again, I am clueless. Full disclosure here, I am a student who suffers from a learning disability in the reading comprehension area. I've pushed myself this far in grad school, but I may have finally met my match. It is truly a situation of I don't know what I don't know. Can you offer any assistance?

there isn’t anything like that on KZfaq, or if there is, they narrow the jobs down to the “common” ones.. as if there isn’t anything else for us to choose.

@@DrEmilyMaiden I have another interesting question! is there anything a pol-sci bachelor student can do other than “studying”? but RELATED to Pol-Sci. like a startup business? a job maybe? activities? for experience. etc. literally anything that provides money and/or experience.

I know there’re jobs here & there, and business ideas for a startup. but niether are usually related to Pol-Sci. Personally, I don’t want to start a business idea untill I get a clear answer for this, (hopefully from you). because no one wants a “boring” perfume company when he’s interested in and studying Pol-Sci. I’ll be waiting for your and only your answer, because who else would answer better?

The only thing I have in preparation to meeting with my sponsor for my independent study is the subject and the type of study I want to do like research. Is there anything else I need to bring to the meeting regarding why I want this or how I'll be doing it? Or will she figure it all out for me? In other terms, am I organizing the syllabus?

All professors can be a little different. I like to hear from the student what kind of assignment style they prefer, like what your goals are. For example, will this be leading into a senior thesis project? If that's the case, I may have your deliverable by the end of the semester be a rough draft of the thesis, or at minimum a research proposal/outline. If that's not your goal and it's more about immersion in a topic, I can drown you with readings. If you want more case studies, I can suggest documentaries and out kinds of media too. I think just have an idea of what your end goal is with the DIS. The prof will be the one to help you pick all the readings/films/etc you will work on together.

I always recommend annotated bibliographies for reading-based IDSs. You could also do a critique essay (or a few) of select readings.

Its true to do the research on the professor. I blindly chose a prof whom I was not familiar with for my capstone. They chose the topic that I am not very interested in, gave vague instructions, have big demands, and change directions just whenever. TL;DR choose your prof carefully, they have a huge impact on you independent study experience

I’m a junior in high school my credits and grades aren’t to good rn, would independent study help or independent study isn’t for that?

I'm not sure if independent study would be an option in HS. You'd have to talk to an advisor at your HS about the benefits and drawbacks of an independent study. I'm not sure what the options are at the HS level.

@@glorfindelchocolateflowery6392 I am not a community college expert, but I'd imagine if you talked to your faculty they will let you know if they're willing to do an IDS with you. Best of luck!
