American football shows that speed, strength, and endurance don't need to be mutually exclusive. All 3 can be gained and maintained through training nutrition and recovery. To build mile endurance run distances longer than a mile at easy paces. For mile speed run distances shorter than a mile first for technique improvement and practice, then for greater speed. 8 x 440 or 12 x 220 on one day and a 3 to 5 mile run on the next day is a sound strategy for lowering mile times.

I am super duper out of cardiovascular shape but I ran an 8 min mile last week. Running a sub 10 minute mile has less to do with capacity and more to just be willing to suffer for a few minutes.

A person can walk a mile in 15 minutes. I'm somewhat surprised that the average mile is 10 minutes, I would have figured something closer to 9 minutes. I ran a 5:59 17 years ago. I Nearly collapsed trying to get sub-6, pushing myself very hard during the last 15 seconds when I saw I had a chance. I also did 2 miles in 13:24 (on a separate run). I haven't tried since then - my knees do not like runs of more than a quarter mile. But I am curious to see what my current time would be.

a marathon runner once told me anything sub 10 for anyone in their late 20’s & older is respectable, considering less than 1/5 ppl can even run a mile at all without stopping. let alone a sub 10

Parkrun would be a great Saturday addition to strength training. It's unfortunate that parkrun is not available to many in the USA.

I remember when I used to run 15 miles in 2 hours as a teenager. I definitely could not do anything close to that now. My deadlift was 315lbs or 335lbs in those days.

My last mile time was just under 8min when I was 50yo at 5’6” 155 now I’m 63 at 175 and I don’t run anymore I just lift. I also have a prolapsed mitral valve and I had it when I ran the mile before.

Hey Coach, how bout talking some rucking metrics? What do you think about Go Ruck races? Can you offer a Strength Co hybrid plan?

What do you think is the most attainable combination of deadlift and mile time, if we consider one minute equivalent to 100 lbs. I mean, it is rare, but there are plenty of people who can deadlift 400 lbs - comparitively few can run a four minute mile (and there is probably 0 or very close to 0 overlap). A five minute mile requires a good but unremarkable athlete, but a 500 lb deadlift is quite an accomplishment. Obviously as we go up in weight and time, the number of lifters shrinks and runners grows - a 10 minute mile is common but very few men can deadlift 1000 lbs - maybe some of them could do 10 minutes. So...which combination do you think is most common? 6:00/600? 5:30/550?

Going 4 for 4 or 5 for 5 won't like work very well. The numbers are not equivalent. Would need to look at the populations at each point to see where the most intersect to give the best overall score. My guess-timate would be 450 deadlift and 6 min/mile would be the most attainable deadlift and mile time.

10 minute mile is average? I think I could walk a mile in like 13 minutes.
