I can tell you what a Gunnery sergeant is , He’s God almighty. When I became a squad leader my gunny taught me what makes a leader. Up until then I thought he was a miserable prick that hated everyone, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Gunnery sergeant Henry Hamel taught me that a leader doesn’t ask his men to do something he won’t, a leader only eats after his men have been fed, and a leader has to balance the mission against the safety of his men and have the backbone to make the right decision. A good NCO values his men more than the highest awards military service has to offer. The last time I saw gunny Hamel was in 1985. He had been promoted to master sergeant and transferred to a combat engineer unit. To this day he is the most honorable Marine I ever met.

Always looking out for the welfare and training of all Marines in His/Her line of duty. Not to mention thier safety. The Sgt. Asked the Lt. Are we training tomorrow Sir. The Lt. Told the Sgt. I am a Gunnery Sergeant (Gunny). My job as a Division Chief was had many folds in it. First - I was told what the mission was and what had to be done to accomplish it. Second - I told the Staff Sergeants what the mission and what had to be done to accomplish it. From that point on the Staff Sergeants would go to their respective shops and brief their people on what the mission was and what had to be done. My Job then was to inspect and check on all of the proper things were done, i.e. supplies, personnel, weapons, ammunition, transport and all of the other fine points of the plan. Additionally, I would insure that the lower ranking troops were well taken care and if they had any questions about anything, I would answer them to the best of my ability. Therefore, I would lead and my people would follow. To me, my troops came first and I came last. Yes, I am a Marine Gunnery Sergeant.

In 1971 I was an Ensign in the Navy Seabees, Construction Battalion #4. We had a Gunnery Sergeant (affectionly called "Gunny"). He was a fairly small, soft-spoken man, but was very much respected by everyone. He didn't say much, but when he talked everyone listened! His job , basically, was to teach us what to do if we were in a combat situation, preparing us for Vietnam. It was over 50 years ago, but I still remember some advice he gave me that could very well have saved my life. Being an officer, it was often our job to go out into the field and tell men what to do. He advised me that when I was doing this in a combat area, don't ever "point" with my hands when I was giving instructions. He said an enemy sniper will hide in a tree for hours, or sometimes days, waiting to take a kill shot. He said they usually try to take out the senior guy, and if he sees you pointing and giving directions with your hands, the sniper will know that you are a senior guy.

I was 0431, love you Seabees...shit, our bivouac site in a Turkish sunflower seed field was hell, until the Seabees arrived....man, our GP tents had wooden floors, electricity, good shit happened when Seabees were around.

We spent 2 or 3 weeks every year doing military training with the Marines at Camp Pendleton, and the Seabees and Marines tended to be pretty tight. The bad guys really hated the Seabees. When we finished building an airstrip, our bombers and fighter planes soon showed up. When we finished building docking facilities our war ships soon showed up. And when those things happened, their lives got a whole lot worse. So the bad guys loved to attack our construction projects and kill Seabees. The main mission of the Seabees is to build things, not combat. The Marines, on the other hand, are very good at kicking ass. I guess the Top Brass realized this, and so they usually stationed these 2 units close to one another. The Marines keep the bad guys away. In return the Seabees would go out of their way to build things and help make the Marine’s lives more comfortable. When some of our other armed forces were attacked, they would hunker down and call in air support. By the time the air support arrived, the bad guys were long gone. On the other hand, if the Marines were attacked, they would immediately go after the bad guys and chase them down. As a result, the bad guys were much more hesitant to attack the Marines.

Old jarhead here, Master Gunny's (there aren't many of them) are respected and feared by EVERYONE (regardless of rank) because they know pretty much every flag officer in the Corps...they also know where ALL the bodies are buried...you never cross a master gunny without great reason as you could wind up being stationed in Greenland or Antarctica...or FORCIBLY retired.

Any E-8 and above Marine or Navy Chief.. Was HIGHLY respected and feared BY ALL OFFICERS!!! From ADM/ GEN to Ensigns/2ndLT.. And E-8's loved the recruit and junior NCO's.. Because those kids reminded them of their youth!!! lol

In case anyone was curious. R Lee Ermey wasn’t a gunnery Sergeant in the Marines. He was a Corporal when he became a drill instructor and worked his way up until he left the Marines as a Staff Sergeant. Later he played the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in FMJ. The movie proved to be so successful in getting people to enlist and painted the Marine Corps in a good image that R Lee Ermey was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant long after he left the Corps. My favorite Gunny was at Parris Island. I was 1st Lt Series commander, he was my series chief DI. He was a big barrel chested tanker from Arkansas. Had a deep dooming DI voice. Had his desk/locker set up behind me in our office. One morning a recruit who wanted to quit our beloved Corps reported in about his hardships. The kid reports in. Incorrectly. I forgot Gunny Burnett was behind me. His response to the young wayward lad actually made me jump like a grenade had gone off behind me. We laughed our asses of about it later. Hope you & the fam are well Gunny. Semper Fi bro.

I retired from the US Army as a Sergeant First Class which is the same rank as a Gunny in the Corps, with the same responsibilities and pay. I would have loved to have been addressed as a Gunnery Sergeant. The title just sounds so much more impressive, and seems to have more prestige or respect. My unit in Vietnam supported Marine Units with air support on a few occasions, and I noticed all Marines, including officers, turned to their Gunny for his opinion. Such respect is not easily earned. The title tells you so much about the man. RIP Gunny Ermey.

When I joined the Corps in 83 and reported to my first unit, my SNCOIC was a GySgt (two tours in Vietnam), he taught me how to be a Marine and I will forever be thankful. He was fair, firm and consistent. As my career progressed and I became a GySgt, I realized that everything happens, or it doesn't happen unless the Gunny has his or her say. Gunny got the juice!

My dad is a retired gunnery sergeant and a retired cop. His way of showing love... "I fucking love you, now get your ass over here and help me with this". If I go on a date, he demands their address, phone number and a picture of their license and tags. He runs background checks on anyone that comes into my life. I'm 38 🤦‍♀️ lol

There are two ranks in the Marines that are afforded the most voluntary respect by other Marines - Sergeant E-5 and Gunny E-7. That's not to say E-6's,E-8's and 9's aren't respected, it's just the mystic associated with each. Sergeant E-5 is the threshold rank for making life and death decisions on a day to day basis in the infantry ( Marine enlisted of every rank are taught that any given instance in combat they may be the "ranking" Marine). Gunny E-7's stand next to the Gods (8's & 9's) but are still human (kind of). They can exert direct "one on one" interface with lower ranks when they want to but typically leave that to 5's and 6's. Depending on conditions (war / conflict and MOS) it is possible to achieve E-5 in less than 4 years (me less than 3, but radar tech not infantry). Was offered Staff E-6 if I re-enlisted after 4. Little known fact - at least in 1970 - Corps would not allow re-enlistments to exceed 20 years for less than E-5's. E-5 is not an automatic promotion. It takes a review board to approve. Great E-4 Marine was denied 20 qualifying re-enlistment due to being mentally challenged. Last I heard base CO was doing everything he could to get him his 20.

As a retired Gunny, I can tell you that it’s much more than just a rank. Gunnys are expected to motivate and drive getting things done as well as set a leadership role for NCOs and the troops. This is largely due to it being the last “tactical” rank before moving into more “command” oriented ranks such as Master Sergeant. And you don’t get there unless your immediate leaders or the Corps thinks you are ready. So suffice it that when you see a kick ass Gunny, it’s because his leaders saw that in him and he and they knew that he would get it done. Semper Fi.

There's few abbreviated or alternate titles spoken with such respect as 'Master Guns'. It's in that same area as 'The Old Man' or 'Skipper' for the CO of a ship.

Gunney's were also responsible to train officers in OCS/NROTC billets... I know first hand, having my butt kicked by a few Gunney's while in officers training

Proud father of a Marine recruit here. As a kid, I was his squadron Commander at our CAP unit and on Field Communications training, I went harder on him and his older brother than the rest of the cadets, to make it clear there was no favoritism. After he left for college, he kinda had a grudge with me. Now that he is on the Marines, he wrote, thanking me for how hard I was on him and that my teachings have made his transition to a Marine much easier than to his peers. He said so many beautiful things on those letters, and I am feeling very proud for his achievements, and I look forward to his graduation day!

A gunnery sergeant is not what Emery earned while on active or reserve duty he attend the rank of Staff Sergeant, and was promoted to Honorary Gunnery Sergeant after his movie and TV roles USMC retired Gunnery Sergeant 1951-1971

Some of the sharpest people I ever worked with were gunnies. I always gave military folks respect, but gunnery sergeants in particular (as did everyone else in our meetings).

So your grandpa was saying the Admiral needed Marines to guard him because the Admiral couldn't trust his own sailors. Think about it; since there were no NVA or VC boarding parties attacking American ships during Vietnam, and the Admiral was never threatened by enemy forces, who else would the Marines be protecting the Admiral from if not the sailors assigned to the Admirals' own ship? Doesn't say much for the Navy when the Admiral trusts his Marine contingent more than he trusts his ships crew, now does it? Okay, in all seriousness now, I served in the Marines from 70-74, including a combat tour in Vietnam. I also transported on several Navy ships, mainly LSTs and LPDs, during my time in uniform, so I saw things from both sides. Is there an inter-service rivalry between Squids and Jarheads? Damned right there is! Any member of the military who is worth his salt is proud of his branch and ready to stand up for it. Army vs Air Force, Army vs Navy, Air force vs Navy, Marines vs ... well, everybody! It's a matter of pride! The Navy and Marines, however, have a unique (and somewhat confusing) relationship the Army and Air Force will never understand. If a group of sailors and Marines are in a bar and a fight breaks out, it WILL be Navy vs Marines. Well ... maybe. If the Marines are stationed on or transporting on a Navy ship, sailors from that ship WILL side with the Marines against sailors from another ship. Similarly, Marines will fight other Marines to side with sailors from 'their ship'. Pride of service is undeniable, but in the naval services (Navy and Marines) your shipmates come first! I was involved in a few of those brawls, and there were times, as the old saying goes, you couldn't tell the players without a scorecard! And just a small point to consider. During WWII, the Navy could not have conquered Iwo Jima with naval gunfire alone. Similarly, the Marines could not have conquered Iwo Jima without naval gunfire. It was the Navy/Marine TEAM that carried the day. And in spite of the family squabbles, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marines are to this day a team, perhaps the most successful and effective military team in the history of the world! Tell your grandpa that a tired old Marine Grunt wishes him "fair winds and following seas." Don't know if you'll understand that, but he will.

This video is an excellent source of information. This should be shown to every enlisted service member over and over. It defines, to the letter, the role of technical expertise needed to serve as a leader at any level of any service.

Before the Iowa Class Battle Ships the all had a secondary 5"38 battery manned by the Marine Ships Detachment aboard the vessels. The turret of these gun mounts had the Eagle, Globe and Anchor painted on it.

Those guys are super rare. I did 20 years in the Marine Corps, I saw ONE CWO5 in my entire service. The Gunner is even rarer. I worked in the air wing, I was active duty, had done my time in an Okinawa squadron and later got orders for a reserve squadron in Ft Worth, TX. Our Maintenance Officer was a CWO5. I gawked at the old Marine because I had never seen that grade of CWO before. Because it was a reserve squadron, our Sgt Maj, XO, CO were all reservists and we were lucky to see them once a month for their drill weekend. This CWO5 was with us every day, so he was in effect our "real" CO. The CWO5 Marine Gunner uses the same bar with red line down the middle as a regular CWO5 on one collar, but on the other collar he has the bursting bomb. It really stands out. These guys are like unicorns in the Fleet Marine Force. These guy are very specific because they know everything about the infantry weapons the Marine Corps uses, and they advise commanders about their usage.

My MOS only has three MGySgt in total across 400 +/- Marines in the MOS itself. Certainly rare to see a Master Guns, almost as rare as Chief Warrant Officer 4's.

I was in the grunts. What disappointed me was how after all the training that THEY devised and all the security clearances that THEY confirmed they still hardly believe a word anybody ever said. Security clearances only matter if denied. Because clearing one never reinforces credibility at all.

As a Gunny, I was a Company Gunny, Platoon Cdr, and an Ops Chief. At 14 years this Gunny brought a lot of experience and maturity to the table. that being said, the narrator's voice reminds me of a stripper I met in Oceanside back in 1992...

Coolest sounding ranks in the Corps are Lance Corporal and Gunnery Sergeant. Master Gunnery Sergeant is pretty unique because you see less of them compared to the command oriented Sergeant Major in the same grade.

Those little concaved shaped things attached to the bottom of the tank are not rockers, they are arcs. And those above the rockers are not stripes. Those there are chevrons. Chevrons and arcs.

@@inorite4553 AR 670-1 defines the rank insignia of Pvt-3, SSG, SFC, MSG and SGM as chevrons over arc or arcs with the term "rocker or rockers" in italics as that is the slang term. If you attend the first NCOPD course you are taught how to properly identify specific features of every minute detail. As do any recon course taken. This isn't done to bust balls or make privates do pushups for NCO amusement. You learn the exacting language and write briefs, MOIs, SALUTE reports, PIR reports, WARNOs, Operations Orders and RFAGOs using proper terms and never in slang. That way from the top to the bottom and bottom to the top there is no ambiguity of what is happening or what is being described. Hence they are not rockers they are arcs. Rockers are those things on your grandaddy's chair that allow him to sway back and forth while remaining in the same geographical lication.

I spent 6 years in the Corps. SSgt’s as new SNCO’s were generally insecure pricks. In the battalions, the Gunny’s were whom you could learn something. As a weapons platoon/company member we always had a a Gunny as Plt Sgt. Still today I treat people the way I learned from those lessons. The one I learned the most from was GySgt Clay L Pope

A very well-respected rank. I saw that cooperating with a gunny was a KEY way to get along, period. If a gunny backed me up, I moved much more smoothly.

I like the Canadian way of doing things better. When you are a sergeant and we only have one of them not 52 of them... You are section( squad) commander. So three sergeants to a platoon. You are a sergeant once in your career and we don't have 19 different sergeants. Being a sergeant in Canada actually mean something.

yeah, the american are absolutelly crazy with their countless sergent rank, their warrant officer that arrent enlisted nor officer and all the redundant rank that are only there to had function to the title. In France, this is quite streamlined. At best, a rank is repeated twice, the higher one having a "chief" added to it, exept for the navy, where all the petty officer are master with an adjective denoting their seniority in the hierarchy. You can be a combattant or in a support unit and everyone, anyway, is a specialist in his domain (you don't send in logistician for a grunt job anyway). There are bit of funky stuff, with cavalry/infantry distinction and the gendarmery, but it's not that important.

A Gunnery Sargeants are fucking magicians. If you've earned your Gunny's respect (which is about the hardest thing a grunt can accomplish.) He can literally make things disappear. 2 dead hookers in your trunk, nothing happened, get busted "building character" with boots that aren't pulling their weight. A signed page 11 disappears out your SRB by the next day. No better friend, no worst enemy. Just don't piss him off. Only Sargeant Major can ruin your life worst than Gunny. I had the same one during my 2 tours in Iraq. By the 1st Battle of Fallujah my squad leader was the only Marine in the battalion I trusted more.

I think they did a movie about Chesty Puller. They still need to do a movie about Lou Diamond, he was a legend in the USMC. Some of the things he did are Marine Corps lore.
