Jazz on a Steel String Acoustic Guitar was fairly popular until the mid 1930s when it was replaced with Electric Guitar. Having said that, Django Reinhardt rejuvenated the popularity of playing Jazz on a Steel String Acoustic Guitar and he even taught himself how to play it with 3 fingers after his last 2 fingers were paralyzed on his Left Hand which took 1.5 years to heal.

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I wanted to know. The sound difference between a regular acoustic and a proper gypsy jazz guitar is huge. I suppose even a Martin with Savarez gypsy jazz strings won't sound quite like a proper gypsy jazz guitar.

When I got that Guitar it needed new Strings so I restrung it w/ John Pearse #2600 Nickel Plated Steel Wound Light Gauge Acoustic/Electric Jazz Guitar Strings, & those strings produced a really neat sound that falls in between a Selmer Maccaferri & a Martin. Nickel Plated Steel Wound Strings (w/ a Wound G) on an Acoustic Guitar basically react & sound a bit like Silver Plated Copper Wound Strings so it's more of a Gypsy Jazz Sound.

I recently restrung my Jasmine S35 with Savarez Argentine Gypsy Jazz Acoustic Guitar strings (Model 1610) which are Silver Plated Copper.

I just realized that the very first Maccaferri Guitar originally had Nylon Strings.

I just got a new Jasmine S35 Acoustic Guitar which needed new strings because the ones that were on it were old and rusty. I was able to get away with using John Pearse 2600 Nickel Plated Steel Wound Light Gauge Acoustic/Electric Guitar strings. Electric Guitar strings on an Acoustic Guitar actually sound a bit like Silver plated copper wound strings so it's more of a Gypsy Jazz sound.

What is not widely appreciated is that Django was probably not the best manouche guitarist at the time (his crippled fingers) but due to the Hot Club recorded repertoire the best known. The "Paris jazz" popular in the cafes predated Django, dating back into the 19th century and parallel development to american jazz; some cross-fertilisation but largely independent development. Radio broadcasts came later, even gramophones were not that common, and strange as it may seem, the french do not speak or sing in english. America did not become the world centre for music until after the second war it was London and Django's recording royalties accumulated there.

They even make Gypsy Jazz Guitars w/ F Holes like a Violin which in French would be called double bouche (two sound holes).

Wowwwwwe I had no idea about the difference in attack between these two styles of guitar. That may be the most stark difference between two acoustic guitars I have ever heard. It seems to be about the sonic difference between nylon and steel, so it would nylon, steel string dreadnought, then selmer at the top in terms of BAM BAM BAM. Unbelievable and thanks for pointing out this difference man. When I can afford one I will def seek one out from you guys. That guitars characteristics are crazy.

But: what about strings differences ? What kind of strings for Gipsy? Bronze ?

At 62 yrs. old, I will not spend too much money on my next guitar since it is only for my personal use. What would be the the lowest price and still acceptable sound brand name that you would recommend? I have seen a few made in China being sold on 'Alibaba web site, but i have heard/read so much/many negative opinions of it that I am worried about losing my money on an instrument that I shall not/never see coming to my door...guive me good advice, Thank you. These Guitars are known to have a Cutaway and a Zero Fret to facilitate good playing technique.

As far as I know Selmer Maccaferi guitars have been developped to sound louder than regular guitars, as were Dobros. It seems that this was not really achieved. Maccaferi resonator was not as efficient as scheduled. It has been removed from most of the guitars.A big difference with a Martin, or "regular" acoustic guitar is that the top is mad of laminate, not plain wood. imho, Django and his peers played Selmer guitars because they were readily available at that time. Would Gibson or equivalent Jazz guitars be available at that time, the sound of Gipsy Jazz would probably have been rather different.
