Buying used is not a new strategy for saving money. But how used is too used. I polled you on what you consider "low hours," and we'll discuss that and the payoff one customer had when he turned to away from the John Deere dealer and turned to me instead.
Good Works Tractors is happy to be sponsored by Rim Guard Solutions! This is perhaps the most well-known ballast brand on the market today. Rim Guard goes right inside your tires, so it's out of the way, it doesn't freeze, and doesn't corrode. It's made from natural materials, so it's safe around livestock and pets if it spills out. Rim Guard liquid ballast adds more weight to the back side of your tractor improving stability, loader performance, and power to the ground. Find your closest dealer at bit.ly/3d0whX0

Having service history is more important than hours. My trucks both have close to 250K and would take them anywhere. My 10 month old tractor has 305 hours…I guess lots of seat time since I mow, chip, haul with it. Love tractor life!

I am blessed to use a 2018 kubota L3901, and a 1970s JD2240. The kubota was bought brand new and has been great, the JD was bought about a year ago and had over 3,000 hours, and was used roughly. Got to learn to turn a wrench on the JD, and i love running both for different chores. Its amazing how much you can learn on youtube and forums don't be afraid to buy used and gain some knowledge, but new tractors are cool to see how they break in.

Bought a 2014 3038e in 2020 with 32 hours. With so little use the seals had dried out a little and it leaked a little fluid. Ive got over 200 on it now. I love that tractor, and would only trade for something with a cab. Brush hogging ragweed sucks.

I definitely agree that the lower the hours the better. With used anything it’s hard to tell how it has been treated and serviced especially tractors. You have the reputation for selling good quality used tractors and you want to keep that reputation. You are on top of your game to search out and purchase good quality tractors for resale and still make a living. Thanks for another great video.

Well I agree to a point. But if a tractor has lower hours but has been hooked to an implemented that is to large for it and has not been maintained correctly. And was abused makes big difference

300 hours on my 2022 3038 JD the first year, Changed the fluid @1 year, now year two I hardly put 60 hours on it 7 months. My big ag tractor back when I had the farm used to get 300hrs in 2 months. I have to say that this little compact tractor has paid for it's self as I'm building a new house and saved over $200,000 alone on the hardscape and landscape

Courtney I have over 800 hours on my little ls tractor. It is serviced every 75 to 100 hours and greased every day. I bought it new in 2020 . That sounds like a lot of hours but it is the machine we depend on most in our vegetable production

Recently picked up a kubota L2850 with 1700 hours on it and it’s been very well taken care of. Always used as a mower with a 72” center mower. Anyway I’m willing to bet it will serve me very well for many years. My local dealer had the same model with 2500 hours on it for over 2000 bucks more than I paid for mine.

Like buying any item, if the original owner who took care of the machine it is worth a lot more than the "I don't care" owner. Most can just look and see if it was or not loved.

People just assume if something is used it's got to be cheaper than new. Price out the new tractor before ever looking at a used one. My experience is dealers are only a couple thousand lower than the new price. In that case it's not worth buying used.

To me, it kinda depends on engine size. Like a BX with 500 hours is normal, while a much larger utility tractor is often seen with 1500-5000 hours. When I bought used in 2015, I kept the hours to under 350 and that Kubota B7610 served me well. Now I own a CK2620se cab and Im only at 20 hours. Gonna be while until it hits 300.

Thank you for your video. I store my Kubota outside as absolutely no choice. The paint is fading. I wash, I wax, I pamper. Would paint fading be decisive to you given the service history and pampering that I have for my machine? Just curious. Thank you!

You could possibly tarp just the top 1/2-3/4 of the tractor to keep most the elements off of it. Just keep tarp from direct contact with hood to allow air circulation.

Hours are only one indicator and a fairly minor one. I’d much rather have a 1,000 hour tractor that has been used, but not abused and has had excellent maintenance than a 200 hour tractor that has never had an oil change and has been run hard and put away wet. A properly used, well maintained tractor should go 5,000 hours easily. When I bought my LX280 riding lawn tractor back in 2005, the deal tried to talk me into a more expensive lawn tractor by telling me this model was only good for 400-600 hours. Well, maybe that is true for someone who abuses the unit and doesn’t maintain it, but my LX280 is approaching 700 hours and 19 years of age and is still going strong and looks nearly new from just a little distance. Sure, the paint is scratched in places, but the seat still has no cracks and I’m still running the original tires believe it or not. Maintenance and proper use are the critical factors in the life of any piece of equipment or tool, not just compact tractors.

Based on most of these comments, i suspect folks do maintenance of hour count and NOT yearly, like my TYM (and vehicle) manuals say to do? Acid will build up in engine oil (and i assume hydraulic oil) and start etching the metals. Is this not a real concern? I use all synth fluids, and will go 2 years on some of my less driven cars, but you have to account for fluid and filter breakdown right?

You should check out the project farm video on oil life. Well, on everything really, but the oil life video is relevant here. I work in industry operating heavy stationery machinery; we sample and test oil very regularly and change oil relatively seldom. Our maintenance program never allows us to change oil based on time in the crankcase; it’s hours or lab results. If you have decent storage conditions your oil should not deteriorate even with a long time in the crankcase. This is my observations based on seeing lab results of oil testing for quite some time.

Once you've found the right tractor for you, if you look after it by doing the maintenance, and parts continue to be available, there's no reason it shouldn't last for 30 years. Buying used won't necessarily have all the latest bells and whistles but cost over service life certainly becomes more favourable for you.

To me, 500hrs would be high.if done over 3-4 m P months by a inexperienced small commercial user or homeowner. But, 500 hrs over 2-3 yrs would not necessarily be high hours if the tractor didn't look abused. I have 200+ hours on a Kioti dk4210se pushing down brush. It's dirty, has a broken headlight lens but the light works, and the flashers high up on the rops are broken. Some buyers would say my tractor has been abused. I have kept up all recommended maintenance.

I had been wondering this myself and just happened to borrow my bosses truck to go pick up my kubota L2850. It has 66,000 miles on it at 2500 hours and some change. This could drastically change for a vehicle that’s driven on the highway most of the time. I definitely feel like 2500 hours could easily make for 100,000 miles on a car driven on the highway all the time.

@@GoodWorksTractors I get quotes from their dealers here and see the msrp compared to tractors from Kubota. Definitely the standard L more bang for the buck then Deere equivalent. You made a good video of the 1025 vs bx but then again you’re new green tractor or that Kioti look better for subcompacts. The M is getting closer to the bigger sizes the only other side of the market where green could maybe beat orange but then there is that right to repair issue as well. I would also point to your own $35k gator experience videos vs this mini dump or any competitors utv for that matter. Plus not very American anymore either when considering the foreign components assembled here is same for orange. Plus Deere is owned by the same huge WEF backed trillionaire funds that are destroying our country and the rest of the world.
