A moving fillister plane is an amazing plane to make rabbits. it is a rabbit plane with both a fence and a depth stop. this will alow you to make repeatable rabbits every time.

I made one minus the nicker. Went to town shaping it with a cut out forming a knob-like thing at the front and the back edge cut out. Everytime I pick it up the Casey Jones theme runs through my head - it's Canonball Express like 😆

Pronounced Rabbit or Rebate, but comes from the french word for a relief or rebate - rabais.

you just made my day - I just picked up one of those moving fillister planes in a group of other planes and mine looks 90% like yours - I paid less than $10(CAD) for it! Now... I have a model for the depth gauge! I started fixing the chipped iron last night! I need to tune the nicker - it is a modified 45 iron that extends (way) too far. rabbit/rebate/bunny - a great smile for the start of the day.

I believe the spur is what turns it into a fillister plane: able to cut a cross-grain rabbet/rebate.

England use to pronounce it rabbet but changed over the last 80 years or so.

That's true of so many words the English get het up about Americans pronouncing wrong. Fowler's Dictionary of Modern English (available at the Internet Archive) is a wonderful resource for this. Written by an English lexicographer in the 1920s, it's full of wonderful entries, though the relevant one here is a little dry: rebate (carpentry) is pronounced ră´bĭt & often spelt _rabbet._

Nicker use to be the more common name. But spur has become more common recently.
