Have you ever heard of the word murmuration?
It’s a super cool word that means slightly different things to different folks.
In the bird world, murmuration references a magical occurrence that a few among us have been lucky to witness .
In my video today, I’ll share the historical meaning of the word... along with a few personal experiences with murmurations, as well as links to some spectacular visual displays… And not just starlings either.

Enjoy,

Have not had the opportunity but certainly would enjoy it if I ever do.

I see starlings in murmurations frequently along Cassidy Rd in Southbury late in the day. Was intrigued by the etymology as I've never really appreciated the sounds of the birds in that movement pattern. I sometimes compare or contrast this pattern to the movements of crows going to roost at dusk that I see in Waterbury regularly. The crows are all over the place with no particular pattern except that they move in loosely connected groups of varying size and shape.

Great observation Robert. I like that you are comparing the starling mumerations to the movement of crows before they roost... The intention feels different... I'm curious what you think.

I have also seen this happen 3 times recently. I notice it happens in early evening hours, while it is still light and in the cooler weather more often here (north of Toronto). I noticed that they seem to move from 1 set of wires to another a block away and land on those wires. Maybe moving to another feeding spot, or closer to their roost?

That's an interesting perspective and observation... Thanks for sharing. What species are you seeing this with?

Is this the same thing that is seen every fall in the midwest, large groups of birds that hang together, back and forth between the power lines and the ground?

I'm not sure. It sounds like you are describing a starling murmuration. What a gift if you've been able to see that in person.
