What is a Nexus Report?

There is ALWAYS going to be a Nexus Report/Letter, the only question is: Will it be written by the VA or by your doctor. VA Disability Nexus Letter (aka Disability Nexus Medical Report)
A Nexus Letter is a doctor's expert medical opinion explaining why injuries, diseases and medical or psychological conditions are service connected and therefore qualified to receive VA Disability payments.
If you're a veteran who has been diagnosed with a disability and are seeking compensation from the VA, a Nexus Report is an essential part of the process. This report is written by a qualified medical expert who will examine your medical records, including those from your military service, and connect the dots between your disability and your military service.
START with Your Doctor's Nexus Letter!
A senior Federal employee who trains VA Raters told Doc Ellis that vets should NOT start at the VA. He explained that many VA Raters are not well trained in the VA law and that the VA's doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners are even less trained. He recommended that vets should first start with their chosen doctor's Nexus Letter. He came from Ohio to Oklahoma for his own Nexus Letter.
More Reasons to Start with Your Doctor's Nexus Letter
1. Many people have an unconscious bias against anyone filing an injury claim.
2. Your military medical records will not have all that is needed to grant VA Disability.
3. You may have few or no military medical records.
So, what should you look for in a Nexus Report? The report should clearly state the relationship between your military service and your current disability, including a detailed explanation of the medical evidence and how it supports your claim.
In conclusion, a Nexus Report is a critical document that can make or break your VA disability claim. Make sure to work with a qualified medical expert to ensure your Nexus Report is thorough and compelling.

Doc Ellis....Your IME finally forced the VA to grant service connection for Meniere's Disease. Initially the VARO and BVA ignored your nexus opinion all the way up to the CAVC. At the CAVC, my appeal for service connection was won. When the VARO rated me on remand, the rater granted the minimum rating of 30% while opining there was no evidence of entitlement to a higher rating. Your IME for MD noted multiple monthly vertigo episodes. I should be rated 100% for this single condition alone. After winning service connection, now I have to fight years again on appeal for my correct rating. Getting VA disability benefits has been very challenging. Thank you for caring.

Good morning Doc, I came across your video this morning and it must have been heaven sent! I was surgically injured at a VA hospital, and it left my right upper extremity permanently disabled. The doctor pretty much abandoned me after my repeated complaints, after saying he was going to do everything to make sure I get all the help I need, including VA benefits. The doctors who injured me said that they didn’t do this to my arm and that my arm was like this prior to surgery. I’m in pain every single day as a result of it. I filed on my own and I’ve been denied for VA benefits since 2019. I also have a tort claim case pending agains’t the U.S. Government. Can you help? Dr ellis after you get an MMI REVIEW ...is there any set time required to file schedule award?

After receiving an MMI (Maximum Medical Improvement) review, there isn't a specific set time required to file for a schedule award under the Federal Employees' Compensation Act (FECA). I have 10% for tinnitus. Just got diagnoses for Parkinson's disease, not agent orange nor burn pits but tce in the Navy, do I need nexus letters for PD, tremor, depression etc. It is a VA contract neurologist who diagnosed me, does that change anything, lastly would you be interested in writing the nexus?

No, the fact that it was a VA Neurologist who diagnosed you would not change anything. You have the diagnosis, we would just have to link it to your time in the Navy with a correctly worded nexus letter, which we would be happy to help with. As an aside, did you happen to cross paths with LT. General (RTD) Rusty Sloane. I ask because he also was a flight surgeon. We had boats next to each other in a Marina in Annapolis. Actually it was Edgewater, MD. Take care and thanks for the information.

Doc, I was a Navy combat vet in Vietnam. I was originally diagnosed with tinnitus and got 10% disability, later increased to 20% and hearing aids. Several years ago diagnosed with sleep apthnea, 6 years ago with PTSD. Neither of which I have filed a claim against. Do I have a case here for Filing a PTSD or sleep apthnea claim?

I filed for planters fasciitis both feet, got denied when I filed presumptive. I went in to the Podiatrist Dr at the VA they did X-rays, the results are bone on bone and surgery to follow along with Dr telling: you have planters fasciitis in both feet. They gave me some insoles and some brace like foot support to use when I sleep. My question is do I file for secondary supplemental claim? Thanks Doc Ellis!

Dr. Ellis Thank you for your informative video. I have a question about Sleep Apnea The difference between 50% & 100%. The question is if you use supplement Oxygen with your BIPAP machine. I also have A-Fib. The Oxygen is from an OXYGEN CONCENTRATOR. What else would you need to prove to get the 100% rating? I am service rated for Allergic Rhinitis and also had a Partial Turbinectomy or residuals of nasal turbinectomy.

I asked if sleep apnea can be secondary to tinnitus and Dr Ellis said it was easy to link. So I paid Dr Ellis $500 for a nexus letter stating so. When the VA reviewed everything they denied my claim. So I next email Dr Ellis everything and he replied nothing can be done other than getting a Lawyer. I asked first if it was easy and he said yes, because if it was going to be hard and get denied I would have went with a Lawyer in the first place. Save your money and go else where.

Legitimate Concern. It is still easy. You simply appeal to the VA Board of Appeals. The judges are honest lawyers and will follow the law. The problem is that some VA raters ignore the medical literature and the VA case law, both of which link tinnitus to obstructive sleep apnea.

No, on the contrary, you should have them all done at the same time (examined). At Ellis Clinic, a lot of the time, we will examine and rate several conditions, then file them individually, so that the claims examiner won't attempt to lump them all together, when making a decision.

If you mean that you do not have medical records from your time in the service that show connection between an injury and your service, the answer is Yes. You need your doctor to write a Nexus Letter that illustrates the connection. If your doctor believes it's service connected then it's service connected.

William get a diagnosis for service connected ptsd from a therapist. From there secondary connect migraines/headaches, and sleep apnea. A common side effect of PTSD is headaches, and sleep apnea. It is also a common side effect for ptsd medication which gives you secondary connection. You need to fill out VA statements and buddy letters and have your doctor fill out DBQ from the VA. 0% is still service connected so you just have to have them reasses or appeal for a higher rating. Best of luck to you. And get a private doctor because VA doctors will not help you

I need a Nexus letter for multiple cervical degenerate disc. I’ve had a C3-C4 fusion last November. I’m currently still having pain just got a new CAT Scan. I’ve been denied twice because lack of evidence. I’m 36 years old. It said favorable findings. I’m a MP that deployed in 09-10. The 249 was my primary weapon and I went on multiple missions. I was a gunner.

Dr. Ellis. My husband passed away 11/2021 he was 💯 and he was in the Gulf War. The corner put on his death certificate #1 was Diabetes, Mellitus, Sequelae and part # Hypertension, Crohn's Disease, Alcoholism. So when do passed away we called to let them know about his death. my sister in-law was told that I needed to file with in one year after his death that I would qualify for the DIC. So I got all of medical records from VA OKC took them up to DiC worker and fill out paperwork and was told 6 months late that diabetes is not a service connection so the dic worker had me to call and ask for letter from his last Dr or psychiatrist because he needed a way to connect his alcoholism to his mental health, along with getting more letter from family supporting our marriage. I’m 56 years young and I’ve been out of the Army since 1989. I had knee and back injuries while serving. Throughout my entire life I had knee and back problems stemming from injuries in the military. My back finally had enough and couldn’t even walk anymore, ended up having a laminectomy in 2019. Filled and was denied because of lack of medical records throughout the years. But I was always seeing doctors, hospitals surgeries and chiropractors my entire life. I didn’t know medical records are not kept for more than 7-10 years. What can I do to prove that I was seeing these doctors and had surgeries throughout the years but can’t get the proof? Would greatly appreciate some advice. Can you please help me. 🙏
