The Quirk Router or Carriage Maker's router is an interesting tool from history. It is like a plow plane that is shaped like a spokeshave. Here is a look at the Quirk Router from Preston.

Hi James. That's a Preston model 1388P and you've missed the primary purpose that router was used for - not just to create grooves, but sprecifically to add grooves to mouldings. They were most commonly used to run a groove alongside a bead to create visual separation from the surrounding pattern. Also, they weren't designed to cut grooves for inlay, that was the job of the Preston 1396 stringing router.

This is the kind of stuff I like seeing on your channel, unique tools and uncommon processes. Both were shown here. I can see were this tool would be used in making groves in cabinet door stiles to fit the panels, back when there were no (cover your eyes and ears) power tools. ;-)

Do you recall how much the seller was asking for it? I've run into a few instances where I've strongly regretted not buying an odd looking specialty tool because I had no clue what it was at the time or thought I wouldn't need it (when I do know what it is). I've also run into even more situations where I was standing in front of a tool or a group of tools that I wanted at a garage sale or related, but I tell myself that I can still take my time browsing a little longer and then someone else swoops in and takes what I was planning to buy (almost within seconds of me making the decision in my mind to hold off a little longer on picking up the tool even though it had just been there waiting for me to find it for all that time up to that point, sometimes for hours). Some of the things I didn't grab when I had the chance over the years... just thinking about it bothers me a lot more than it probably should.

Thank you James! Always sharing and helping us learn more about this wonderful craft. I personally see it more as an inlay type of tool. A marriage between the router plane and a scratch stock. (More than with a spoke shave) Actually for inlay looks really cool as it can manage different depths and the ability to work for making stopped grooves, flat and curved surfaces and allows for the fence to have several distances from the edge. Looking at old/classic furniture with lots of inlay, this tool to me makes a lot of sense. Thanks again!

My understanding has always been that a 'quirk' is a feature of moulding. A 'quirked moulding' is one which features a groove between convex & concave surfaces. If you wished to quirk your moulding, and had only hollows & rounds, then a quirking plane / router would be used (as opposed to a complex moulding plane which could achieve it from a single cutting iron).

The side with the curved blade is drawn in one direction. The two edges of that curve cut the sides of the groove. So, after that side has been pulled, all you have are two parallel slices in the wood. Then, you draw the tool in the other direction, rotated slightly so the flat blade digs into the wood. As you draw that blade, it cuts (scoops) under the wood that was between the slices. As it does this, the wood in the center is sheared off underneath. That leaves you with a groove or channel. I hope that helps.

@@anonymousaccordionist3326 There's grooving planes which do something similar, but they can't really deal with curves like this one, the Stanley 45 also probably covers this with similar probems, or like he mentioned there's the scratch stock which does a similar thing, hell you can do it with a chisel too, it's all a matter of what you need specifically for the job, and there's probably more.
