Great video, first of all, but the use case described in the video is more suitable to an Arduino, which works on a microcontroller, making it a really good and inexpensive option for building these automated systems, a raspberry pi however works on a microprocessor which is more powerful and is generally used to build things like servers and entertainment systems.

Raspberry Pi boards are getting unreasonably expensive lately.

The best part is when she calls the RPi affordable, as if scalpers haven't grabbed every one and made them unavailable at MSRP. Use an ESP32 and a breakout board for small projects like the one in the video or WLED. I use a Pi for an Octoprint server and a few other things (UniFi controller, wireless print server, etc.) but they aren't needed for low power applications.

You could setup a Raspberry PI to detect when someone walks up to your house or knocks on the door and then it plays a loud dog barking. You could also use it to turn lights on and off at random to simulate someone at the house.

Arduino kickstarted this joy in the mid 2010s but Raspberry Pi has made microelectronics abit more ubiquitous

Raspberry pi are great at acting as a local dev environment - I use it to be able to run vscode and a portable dev environment on my iPad Pro

A raspberry pie is similar to the raspberry pie food except that instead of bread you have a board, instead of eating it you code it and instead of berries, you have cherries.

I interned and worked in many IT companies and no single one used a pi. Its just way too overpriced for its capabilities. It is good for beginners as it has a great community, but other singleboard computers are way cheaper/faster.

In this example, microcontroller could be used.

It's a SBC (Single Board Computer) that has I2C, SPI, and GPIO. If you don't know what I2C, SPI, or GPIO is, then you will never know what a Raspberry Pi is.

But you can use a 2$ esp8266 to control a food dispenser. It can have a web interface and use an atomic clock. So no rpis aren't for that.

The pi shown in the photo would more be used to make something more complex like a pet feeder that dispenses different food quantities based on the dog that's there using a camera.

All of this could be done with a arudino. The real reason raspberry pi is used is because its a Soc it can be used as home server, things which need network etc..

Probably the most awkward explanation ever... Most people still don't have a dog and wouldn't know how to even get started with a project like that if they had a dog. "Just write some python code" lol Any idea how many programmers even don't know python? And there are so many more interesting things one can do with a pi than a dog treat dispenser. How about setting up your own ad-blocking service that works for every device on your home network, a VPN server that allows you safe access to your private files or even your own mail server? Just some of the things that a raspberry pi can easily do and requires a lot less skill than writing your own software. And all this on the power of a USB device for around $50 (add in a couple $/year for a domain name and you're all set).

I guess one of the reason is pi was well documented a by a comunity who willing to do expirement and research work and willing to publish to the public unlike other board that are typicly use and brought by company don't have as much people willing to do such work and would want to publish their finding on the public

for the task you just described, I believe using a raspberry pi is an overly engineered solution and it should be used where high computation is required, one could use an AVR for such applications.

For this food dispenser example it would be enough with a microcontroller e.g. an Arduino, no need for a Raspberry Pi full computer board

That example is far too simple for a raspberry pi.. just get an arduino that is 1/4 the cost and will do the same thing. You don’t need a computer to do a few minor calculations, you would just need to get an old calculator for $5 to do that task

Okay yes but the time and energy it takes to make a treat dispenser. Also it'll be expensive compared to buying one from Amazon. If you want to do it as a project for fun it's good. Otherwise I don't think this is a compelling reason to get a raspberry pi

96$ for a Pi 5 is cheap. Lmaoo. Treat Dispenser with a PI seems like overkill though seeing how you can actually use the Pi to code that Py script

Describing a Raspberry Pi as inexpensive was accurate a few years ago but not now. An Arduino would be a much less expensive and easier to wire and program.

To be honest, the word “affordable” is hardly applicable to raspberry pies these days. While they used to be cheap and cool solution for a wide variety of tasks, today you wouldn’t want to buy one “just for fun and food dispenser” IMO. Besides that task with a food dispenser can be solved more effectively on a truly cheap AVR or ESP chip, raspberry pi is an overkill here I think

"raspberry pi's are really affordable online" price used to be ~75-90 for a recent model ( pi 4 with 4 or 8 gb), now often they go for 200+. Also NOBODY has 'm in stock. They get sold out in couple hours. I got mail that the shop I had notification on for it had them around 11 AM, by the time I got to it around 2 PM it was sold out. I called, 2 pallets went thru. Please promote some other compute board. No video out needed on it either.

They're not really that affordable, especially for simple projects. Something like that could be handled with a less expensive, less powerful board. The images showed a raspberry pi 4 which is quite overpriced right now. If you use the raspberry pi 2 or something like that, it might make sense The raspberry pi 4 could be used as a desktop computer. Smart home controller (controlling multiple devices and cameras) or even as a web server?

Its totaly overkill. Using a whole computer with Linux operating system consuming around above 15w. Instalking os system, type program etc and spent the 40dollars on Just one board. The better solution is using microcontroller for 1 dollar. For example arduino which is cheaper, easier to use (the program could be done in 3 minutes without any installations). Recommending someone raspberry pi to program like this is because author do really not understand What rpi or he desant know much about electronic/engeenering and reccendimg 1 think that knows to every thing on the worlds

or you can do it properly with any other uC and dont waste a 4 core 1.5ghz arm cpu to switch on a relay

I think Raspies were originally invented to help make computer accessible to everyone, so yes you can use them for projects like the ones you described. But also you can use them as a fully fledged PC that only costs you a fraction than a normal PC :)
