I hope you guys found this video on recirculating CO2 scrubbers useful! There's plenty more information on this if you do a bit more googling, please use this an introduction to your setup needs. If you're interested in knowing what equipment I am using, check out the links below.
Airpump (Tetra Whisper): amzn.to/37SiieF
Skimmer (Octo Classic 110SSS or 150SSS): amzn.to/34DU71v

Very cool work, the air pump is genius. How long does the media last after implementing the air pump solution?

Inappropriate Reefer I haven’t changed it since I implemented it... it’s been over a 45 days and the color still hasn’t changed. My guess easily 2-3months. Depending on how much air passes through from the air pump. Nice thing is that it can be dialed in to a minimum such that now water build Up in the scrubber!

Or, alternatively, run a fuge reversed lit, like everyone else. This isn’t a practical idea which other people will follow.

Chosen Jacob I ran a reverse fuge for about a year and a half with triton method. Work well, but I then decided to move away from it from a nutrient control perspective and doing the Triton Other Methods. I was finding it hard to maintain a stable chaeto population and that taking out small amounts of chaeto frequently was not going to work for me because of certain travel schedules. If I ever removed too much chaeto at one time, it resulted in a pretty drastic system imbalance. Hence this is how I ended up here. I will say this though. This scrubber method is not hard to setup and is relatively cheap. It also does not move parameters as much like the fuge can do, depending on the circumstances. Definitely not telling people to remove their fuge if that is working for them.

Great job. Most would have just concluded that the recirculating system depletes the media in four days. Thanks for the valuable tested information!

Thanks dude! I’m not sure I “deserve” anything, I definitely do my best making the videos I can. I just need to find the time to make more content, which is always a struggle.

7.8 to 8.3 is absolutely fine. fluctuations within that range are absolute fine. I run a scrubber too, but get nearly the same result by running a 1/2 line outside. The benefit you speak of in a recirc scrubber, is the media lasts 3 times as long, but Ive found it STILL fluctuates. Im happy with stability anywhere within that range. I usually stay at 7.9 during the day and 8.1 to 8.2 at night. Im running an Apex.....Good video, thank you.

Very cool, I’m going to give this a shot with the air pump. I have a ton of people in my house everyday and fuge alone just doesn’t do it for ph. My co2 reactor solves this but only last 2-3 days currently with no air pump. I have my skimmer set to shut off at a ph of 8.4 and back on at 8.2

Great information. Question, could you tell us what the red thing is connecting all the hoses from the skimmer lid and how you configured it to accept the hose that runs back to the skimmer?

Hi, may I know what is part above the skimmer called that connects multiple pipes attached to the skimmer

hi, on the basic setup without using a closed loop, do you connect the BRS scrubber inlet to the skimmer or the outlet to the skimmer??

This is very interesting....I have co2 scrubber media on hand and was thinking of doing a DIY with an empty cylinder. Because I already pull outside air into my skimmer through the air intake, my thinking was to modify the empty cylinder to have the air tube enter the side at the bottom through a hole with a silicone gasket to maintain the air tightness, cut the hose inside about 1” in, and resume the air hose at the top, also installed with a tight fit, then it could travel to the skimmer air intake....🤔 I think it would be very simple to add a second air line from a skimmer cup lid cover (as you illustrated) down again to the bottom of the cylinder and I believe the air draw from the skimmer would be sufficient to pull the recirculated air through, without having to add a second pump....I have a Deltec 600i, which has a DC pump and thus I can increase the levels to pull more air.....this really has me thinking.... Great video, thank you for sharing! 👍🏻👍🏻

Glad you found it useful! Having a hard time visualizing exactly what you mean haha I would need a picture/diagram. Youre right in that you don’t need an air pump for the recirculating portion of the skimmer. However the air pump is handy in that it lets you cheaply regulate additional air intake for moisture control. The additional cost would only be in the $20 range which would be well worth it. Mind if I ask what your peak pH and what you keep your alkalinity at? With this setup I can run as low as 8.0 dkH with a pH peak of 8.55 at day time (calibrated).

pH ranges from 7.95 overnight to 8.15 during the day (min/max readings I’ve seen). Alk is currently 7.5 and I’m slowly increasing it to a target of 8.5. I’ve had a lot of growth and for a while was struggling to keep it above 7. But I’ve finally found the right dosing levels to keep it increasing steadily. I should reach the target in about 2 weeks. Thing is, I have to do a lot of fragging, mainly montipora plates, so I know there’s going to be a big draw on Alk as soon as I do that. I’d normally shoot for 8 as a target, but I don’t want to start fragging until I get it to at least 8.5. It’s going to be a balancing act....🤔

Reefgrrl haha doesn’t sound like you have any problems. Honestly if your growth is fine I wouldn’t want to push your pH too high. You may have an explosion in growth!

Maybe dumb question, but what did you use to make the hole in the tube to insert the air pump hose?

Hmm.. But, the top of the tank surface water will pull in CO2, so you're not really a closed loop.
