It's a beautiful day in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo -- country 188! While there are many interesting things about this city, nothing is more fascinating than the SAPEURS!
"La Sape" is a cultural movement among Congolese men, who dress themselves as dandies and put great emphasis on their style and physical appearance. They wear the fanciest suits, ties, hats, shoes and accessories all around town!
At first, I thought it was just a hobby or a passion, and it certainly is both of those things, but sapology is more of a cultural movement among the (mostly) poor men on the streets of Brazzaville, and it's really cool to learn about!
Have you ever heard about the sapeurs before? Share this with your dapper friends!

It's a totally social outlet for men with nothing to do, nowhere to go. This gives them something to live for, and a little pleasure in an otherwise underprivalidged community. Like in any other society, one must make decisions, do I buy my families necessities, or do I splurge on clothes? Most, as in most societies, the man or woman is going to make the right choice. I get that a few are going to choose themselves over their family, but this happens in every society. BTW, I did watch the Dandies documentary, very insightful, and interesting.

Basically black man saw white civilized men years ago and wanted to copy them.. But instead of working, studying to achieve as the white man they saw, they just focused on buying the clothes and not carrying about anything else!! They just wanna show off!! Even if their family lives on a shed and barefoot.. They spend thousands on expensive brands.. This is the pinnacle of comedy for a white western men 😂

0:58 in a really good sounding français he said "La sappe, c'est d'abord l'élégance" which mean that the sappe is foremost about elegance. 1:11 "Je sens que je suis à l'aise" I'm feeling at ease 2:16 "C'est tout un mélange" It's a mix 2:38 "Je suis devenu sappeur dans des années lointaines" I became a sappeur long years ago 2:55 translation fail the guy said "quatre-vingt quatorze" which mean 94, not 84. I love these guys.

I'm from across the Kinshasa side of the river where there is a rival sape (not "sappe") scene. No serious sapeur would dare wear fake stuff, only poseurs. Not really my thing and l find it a bit ridiculous but the "grands prêtres" or high priests who set the bar would be humiliated and lose their status which is everything in that underground subculture that spans to Paris, London, Brussels and Tokyo.

Mens suits like those were originally designed for people in Nothern European areas where it is colder. Id love to one day see people in warmer, humid climates around the world develope their own modernist versions of dress wear with less layers and nothing around the neck. It would be pretty neat to see them create a whole new style that gets copied in Western society warmer climates.

I lived in Brazzaville for a year (1989-90). And yes, les sapeurs were in force then. Well-dressed always before well-fed is the motto. Clothing is more important than housing as well.

La Sape, an abbreviation based on the phrase Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes (french, literally "Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People") and hinting to the French slang word sape which means "clothes" or sapé, which means "dressed up", is a subculture centered on the cities of Kinshasaand Brazzaville in the DRC and Republic of Congo respectively. An adherent of La Sape is known as a sapeur or a sapeus. The movement embodies the elegance in style and manners of colonial predecessor dandies.

Many bankrupt their families and let their children go hungry in order to buy expensive clothes. This is cultural bankruptcy.
