Welcome to the first episode of A Guide to Australian Spiders, which I hope will eventually become a long series covering Australia's incredible spider fauna in detail, from funnel-webs to huntsmen, and everything in between!
This first episode provides an introduction to taxonomy and phylogeny, both very important aspects of biology. It outlines how spiders are related to other animals, and gives a brief bit of information about each of the major groupings that they belong to, as well as some related arthropods like myriapods (centipedes and millipedes), hexapods (insects etc.), and crustaceans (crabs, lobsters, crayfish etc.).

I'll admit the views on this video are pretty disappointing, especially seeing as the series seemed pretty anticipated. Was any aspect of this video a letdown or something?

This video should be shown in schools. I have to confess that your explanation of taxonomy and phylogeny made my eyes roll back in my head. My distant recollection is that the same happened when I was a school student. But from time to time I think about classification of living things and regret that I didn't pay more attention as a student. If I do want to learn, this channel would be a great starting point. Cheers.

Coming to you from the world of botany, thank you for this video. I don't know as much about animal taxonomy, especially not arthropod taxonomy. I know they have deep relationships with plants so it's helpful to have this video to get to know them.

Amazing. I'm an enthusiast but with little knowledge. Always loved arachnids and living in Melbourne I got to know a few local spiders. Moved to the Northern Territory I just seen and handled my first Venatrix esposica who was at the bar near the feet of a patron. Happily eating by the looks of it because its behaviour was quite bizarre as it at first looked like its legs didnt work. As I made contact it became more livley but still quite relaxed. Looked up your page so I can learn more. Also safely and respectively removed two beautiful red backs from guests rooms without any damage.

Outstanding video mate. The content was clear and well presented , the information was factual and and very well collated. I think the lack of views stems primarily from the fact that too many people simply want to be entertained, learning interesting and thought provoking material, is simply too cerebral for many, unfortunately. I ,on the other hand, love this and truly enjoy learning at any given opportunity. You have a new subscriber.

I thought the inclusion of horseshoe crabs into the middle of the arachnids was from an experimental error. This was actually confirmed to be correct?

From memory, the first study to propose that was an error, then another study came out later that actually reinforced it.
