What Is A Subkick Mic And Is It Worth The Effort?

A sub-kick mic is just a loudspeaker used in reverse as a kind of crude microphone. Installed in front of a bass drum head, the signal can be blended with a regular microphone to add depth and heaviness to the recorded sound. There are a bunch of technical issues to be aware of, including signal strength and speaker size/type, but it's an easy DIY project. Are the results worth it? Well, that's another story! In this video I'll go over everything I learned when making my own subkick mic, and show some examples of how it sounds.

It absolutely matters what way you wire it for phase coherency. Nuff said It's a must to know what way it's wired., 8 or 10 inches is ideal. A Transformer for impedance matching as well really makes a step of noted difference,

I understand the electrical theory as far as polarity, but what I'm asserting is that it made no difference in the quality of recorded sound. If you have phasing issues with other mics you can reverse that in software. Listening to the subkick alone, though, the quality of sound was the same regardless of wiring polarity. Essentially you are recording the movement of the speaker, and with either polarity the movement is the same.

Great informative video, I like the 12" over the 7.5" blended when listening back, what do you prefer in studio?

You know, I agree the 12 inch is the better of the two. Lately I've been using one mic inside the bass drum and one mic placed right at the front head access hole. Then I blend the two. The subkick mic speaker I'll use in unique circumstances when I need more of a muffled-puffy sound over a direct, pinpoint sound.
