Have you ever wondered what is a tape head demagnetizer and how does it work? In this video I explain what a demagnetizer is, and why many people use it as part of their routine cassette deck maintenance.
The demagnetizer I show in this video was given to me as a Christmas present way back in 1985 (or thereabouts). It was sold back then by Radio Shack.
In the video I talk about different styles of demagnetizers, how they work, and why many people feel they are so important.
I have also learned that there seems to be quite a debate surrounding demagnetizers. Some people feel they are essential to prolong the life of the tape head in your cassette deck. But others feel demagnetization is completely unnecessary. Where do you stand in this debate?
Do you own a tape head demagnetizer? Do you use it frequently? What style is it? Is it cassette style or a wand type? Do you own a reel to reel machine? And do you frequently demagnetize its heads?
What kind of routine maintenance do you do on your tape deck(s)? Is there a demagnetizer that you feel works the best?
Are you into retro or vintage technology? Then this is the channel for you! On this channel I frequently post videos relating to cassettes, cassette decks, CDs, CD players, walkmans, laser discs, VCRs, home recording, home studio gear, analog synthesizers, drum machines, microphones, cameras, and so much more! I have never seen a cassette demagnetiser like that one where the magnet travels around the casing! I've seen the ones where cleaning tape is looped around a circular magnet causing it to spin, though.

Yeah, I think many kinds were made over the years.

Hey hey. Recent subscriber here. I find this kind of thing fascinating. I've heard it called degaussing before. I remember buying cassette head cleaners in the 1980s. I'm not sure if I've got a cassette player any longer. I might have as I certainly used to have one and I'm loathe to discard stuff. I've still got my laserdisc player for example, and my Phillips CDi player. Ah casettes... the world was younger and more innocent in those days. Then came CDs, minidisks, MP3s. I've long wondered how a cassette recorder worked. I could google it, or I could hope my favourite tech review guy tells me. And, related to this perhaps, have you ever noticed when watching old TV shows that were made on video tape, that in a quiet scene just before the programme ends, you can hear the theme tune playing very quietly a second or two before it starts properly? I've always assumed that it's because the magnetised tape somehow copies itself through onto the tape that it's spooled next too. Anyway, thanks for an interesting video.

Yes, I have noticed that (hearing something during a quite passage). And yes, I think that is called leakage. Thanks for watching!

My opinion is that it is not necessary to demagnetize the heads.. Cleaning the heads and the tape periodically YES...... But i do not agree with demagnetizing that would harm the heads in some siituations ..! I own one of the best reel to reel decks of all times , AKAI GX635D and the GX glass end x'tal ferrite heads DO NOT need any demagnetizing at all and that is said from a lot of reviewers and do not by me...!!! Remember Technics RS-AZ7 with Z heads that DO NOT NEED ANY DEMAGNETIZING ...!! I want your opinion about that.. Thank you , i am John from Greece..
