What vegetables can you grow in the Tasmanian winter? How can you improve winter growing conditions? Is Tasmania a really cold place?

I enjoyed this video a lot. The climate in Tasmania seems very similar to my home country here in wales uk. I think it’s a great climate, there’s something to be said for life with 4 proper seasons.

We live on the north west coast of Tassie in sight of the Bass Strait on a hill. Frost doesn't settle here so we are able to grow broadbeans, brassicas, carrots and parsnips if planted in autumn and greens and peas in winter. No issue! We have to worry about wind more than anything :)

Living at Collinsvale, I know what the elements can do to your garden and fruit trees, I know what its like to work outside in inclement weather, I know that to be prepared and dressed appropriately makes a world of difference, it can be difficult, but I've been here for thirty years, started from just a bush block, built a comfortable home and an enjoyable and pleasant garden, I've lived on mainland Australia for some time but muchly prefer it here, all the best

The "Newfoundland" of Australia. I saw a video on Newfoundland and it's way nicer than the USA. So I looked up Tassie in the hope that it might be a bit like Newfoundland and it seems to be. Seems to be no ugly billboards and ugly commercialisation like on the mainland and in the USA.

@@Justwantahover That's sort of true but most of Australia is actually like that. Of our 24 million people, half live in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne so you can find solitude in just about any state. A person has said that the tasmanian climate is similar to the climate of the north east United states. I live in the northeast and the seasons are drastically different. In summer it is very hot. fall is chilly and winter can be terribly cold sometimes getting several inches of snowfall. Spring is the most pleasant season.

No, that was before we had a channel! It originally was built with a corrugated iron roof. I then added some timber around to hold about 150mm of material, and covered the timber and iron with plastic. (It needs to be able to drain still.) I filled this with fine pinebark (not soil) and a little compost on top. Originally planted this with Daffodil bulbs only....everything else has found it's own way there!
@jessjames93

What's the government/councils like in Tassie? In terms of buying land and building a tiny house or small home? That's what I'm saving for. Currently living in Melbourne but saving to get out of here ASAP. I don't want to owe any money to banks to it's a bit of a slow process. But, there's some beautiful land for sale in Tassie. It's super confusing knowing if I'd be allowed to build something small or have a non permanent dwelling on the property. They make it hard for a reason I guess, trying to keep us all in the rat race.
@homesteading
@homesteading 4 жыл бұрын
Haven't navigated that path myself so can't give a definitive answer. But I don't think a small house would be a big problem. As to relocatable tiny houses, maybe this (www.cbos.tas.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0014/414113/Fact-Sheet-Tiny-Houses.pdf) maybe helpful - if you haven't already seen it. There is of course some variation of attitude from individual councils. But generally they are helpful...one would hope!
