I bought a 1975 SS250 brand new. It was a great bike and my first. I learned a lot about riding on that bike. After I rode it a couple of years and had to replace the tires, I put a pair of Yokahoma semi-knobs and took it off roading too. The kick lever kept on stripping out so I had it welded to the crank shaft and never had a problem after. At the time, it seemed to be able to keep up with hyway traffic and I even rode 2 up on it. I ended up upgrading to a bigger bike in the mid-80’s. I loved that bike and would have kept it but for the fact that I didn’t have room for 2 bikes.

Thanks for the comprehensive history of the Aermacchis. The displacements listed along w/ the horsepower ratings - very Interesting. My folks bought me a new 1972 65cc Leggero when I was 11. I didn't know what to do with myself. That thing was a blast, but the shifter arrangement was a nightmare and I don't think it ever worked correctly - missed shifts, falling out of gear, etc. Harley called it the "Quick Selection" shifter.

I have a 1971 MLS 125 Rapido that my dad bought for me new when I was 11. Just dug it out of the barn where it had been deteriorating for the past 30 years. Last had it running and licensed around 1990. Plan on doing a restoration on it. With its high exhaust pipe, unique dual rear sprocket setup that allowed for a change of gearing without removing the rear wheel, and stock semi-knobbly rear tire the bike was more of a dual sport/scrambler than a strictly road bike.

I will see it run ( looks pretty good so far) Don't want to get ahead of myself, but there is a rapido that is getting its come up after the sprint runs

Great Video Great History .. I think HD Manufactured their own light weight two stroke Motorcycle and scooters in the USA in the 1950's before they bought into Aermacchi. The only thing missing from your Video is photos of some of the bikes the road race bikes in particualr.. Yamaha Started selling the TZ-125 250 500 and 750 cc road race bikes in 1974 so it's Impressive that Aermacchis beat even Yamaha in that era of road racing.. The Itilian bikes were pretty good but this when the Japanase "Big-4" were just getitng going .. and just like the Britich Brands they did not keep up with the Japanese..

Harley made and sold snowmobiles between 1971 and 1975 using Aermacchi manufactured two-stroke engines the Y-398cc and Y-440cc. The snowmobiles were initially assembled at the York, PA facility under the AMF brand which was a part of AMF's Western Tool Division. When AMF acquired H-D they branded the snowmobiles as Harley sleds and moved assemble to Oak Creek, MO which assembled the then branded Harley-Davidson golf carts. The Harley sleds couldn't compete in the established market against Polaris, Artic Cat, and Ski-Doo (Bombardier) and the Harley sleds gained a reputation for poor frame and drive train quality even as the engines performed well. A good book to read is "Well Made in America: Lessons from Harley-Davidson on Being the Best" about taking H-D private from AMF and their 5 year turnaround strategy. H-D was within 3 days of closing its doors before they found a bank that would take a chance and provide funding.

Harley - Davidson also built Golf Carts from 1963 until 1982, the carts were powered by a 245 cc single cylinder 2-stroke motor. Elvis Presley was an owner and rider of Harley - Davidson motorcycles, in 1967 Elvis bought a brand new blue and white Harley - Davidson golf cart and he didn't even play golf, Elvis used the cart to drive around his vast Graceland estate. Elvis's H-D golf cart is on display at the Graceland estate to this day.

You missed two of the nicest Sprint road bikes, the C model and the H model, both 250cc flat singles, the H model was very popular and could run with the Sportsters on the highway, also you missed the fact that you could go to your Harley dealer and buy a ready to race flat-tracker, the CRS, and the road race ready CRTT. These racers were very competitive, Mert Lawwill races a CRS in "On any Sunday" and the 350cc 4-stroke CRTT is still being raced today in Europe and South America, their flat single motors led to excellant handling, In 1966 a 250cc CRS Sprint set a world record in the 250CC class, turning over 176 mph. There are a lot of picture of these machines on the web, they are among the most handsome machines ever built.

Don't forget the ERS. That was the 350 CC version. I raced one in 1971 - 73. Great handling bike. I won a lot of TT races and more than a few 1/4 mile races. I even won one 1/2 mile race in Calistoga, CA. In reference to Mert Lawwill, I was "helping" him unload his factory racer at the San Jose 1/2 mile national in 71 or so and I asked him how could I make my Sprint more competitive. His answer; "Get a Yamaha". When a bike is talked about as a "great handling bike" that is usually a nice way of saying no power. I still loved my ERS. I have a 1972 Sprint that I have been wanting to restore with 1973 components to get the 5 speed and better head for more power. Maybe someday.
