Col, I came to Australia in 1967 as a 7 year old. Wasn't very interested in soccer, however liked to run with a rugby ball. On arrival in Adelaide we had a home in Glenelg to move into, and the Glenelg Primary School to attend. Glenelg Primary School is adjacent to the Glenelg Football Club. Instantly I was enthralled by the game and managed to get to a level of being paid per game, before succumbing to the dreaded AFL injury of an ACL X 2. Still get to as many games as possible. Love it live. There's nothing like it.

And in case you are wondering... girls and boys are taught it in school and in the last few years the Women's AFL has started and they are as tough as the guys. Also any injuries or strapping is done with flesh coloured tape. If you make the strapping obvious eg use white tape, your opponent will target it and hit you there HARD. The only protection is a mouth guard and a box for the guys. Some guys who have had head injuries have worn a lighter helmet but most don't bother. Its not mentioned but if you score a behind, the opposing team immediately kicks the ball in from the square in front of the goal. If a goal is scored, the umpires relay the ball back to the centre for a bounce. If the ball is touched on its way between the centre posts then its classe3d as a behind. If you touch it and it goes between the behind and goal post, its thrown in from the side by the umpire and the players have to jump for it. The centre umpires (all three) can cover as much as a marathon each game. The goal umpires have to do the same training as the field umpires. The break between quarters is only 10 mins and half an hour for the half time break. If someone is injured to the point of being out of the game, no further extra subs can be used. I mean that if you have 5 men injured, then you have to continue one short as a team is allowed 18 ont he field and 4 interchange who can be rotated in and out of the game to rest or replace injured team mates. This is not a game for weaklings or showboats... its all about the TEAM!

Quite enjoyed watching this, your reaction to the size of the field, gave me a chuckle, because of the history, the first game ever played, the field was actually twice as big, there were no behind posts to score 1 point. And was decided after 1 game it was too big, making it what it is now, The score was 0-0 . Second game same score, by the third the behind posts came, and hallelujah the score at the end, 1 - 0. A quick fast paced game, from years ago, alot of rules changes, for safety. And you cringe how high theyll jump for a mark. well like the NFL theres alot of head injuries, and for years theres been discussion from time to time about head gear. And im also gonna say, NFL has played a big part in many things over the years, thanks to two top coachs who went to america to study your football, many years ago. Your game was alot more proffessional when it came to the training physio ect, it raised standards here, you notice a fitter team. Those two particular coachs at the grand final the follow year. and one was smart enough, to take on game plays, there team won 22 out 24 games over the season. Oh and the ball twice as heavy as yours, its why a few aussies have been picked up over the years for the NFL to be a Punter i think, because of how far they can kick it. NFL is an amazing sport to watch aswell, and i can assure you, watching and learning how the game is played, i have the same reaction as you.

Nice reaction Sean. The video you reacted to is old, but holds up on the main points. It talks about the crowds we get. Even in a year of COVID they managed to average nearly 6000 people per game, all the more impressive when you consider that 10 teams are based in Victoria which was in lockdown for nearly the entire season. The average attendance for 2019 - 36,000+, whilst some of the biggest teams averaged 50,000+ per game, so yes, pretty popular. We manage that with a total population of 26 million, of which probably 9 million prefer rugby league. In comparison, NFL averages 67,000 from a population of 330 million, about 11 times our population, the Bundesliga in Germany averages about 43,000 with a population of 80 million and the EPL averages 38,000 with a population of 68 million. Players come in all shapes and sizes. The current smallest player on a list is 168cm (5'6") while the tallest is currently 213cm (7') while the average is 188cm (6'2") the same height as the average NFL player but lighter on average 88kgs (197 pounds) to 109kgs (245 pounds), mostly due to the extreme aerobic side of AFL making it hard to maintain weight whilst your linemen blow out the NFL average weight. Average distance covered is about 9 miles per game, but that is the average. The top runners will cover 11 or so miles. Stats from 2012 had players spending about 5 1/2 minutes at speeds above 11mph on average per game and last year one player hit 37.4 km/h (23.24 mph). To put that speed into context, in 2009 Usain Bolt won the 100m World Championship with an average speed over the 100m of 37.58 km/h or 23.35 mph and he wasn't wearing football boots. These are good athletes.

Bouncing the ball every 15 metres (16 yards) is so that a player cannot simply be the fastest, but also be skilled. The "Bro" being high in the air, is Nic (Nic Nat) Natanui and is LeBron Size at 6'8" and very athletic. This sport is "very reckless", its not reckless but requires commitment, courage and extreme fitness as the game is non stop and players are required to run over 14 km a game. The best recent effort was 18.5km (approx12 miles). To get a better understanding of the game watch a replay or a full game on either the official AFL site or just Google it. One of the best was the 1989 Grand Final, but any game will do. If someone was on your back you would throw him off, but if you worried about that then you would not be able to go for the ball, which is the object of the game. Someone on your back is just part of the game and from a young age you are taught to keep your eyes on the ball, if you don't it is viewed as cowardly and a player would be dropped from the team. As I said earlier commitment and courage are non negotiable in the game. "This is literally every sport rolled into one" As AFL was started in the 1850's its far more likely that other codes took things from AFL, rather than AFL from them.

It's easily the #1 sport in Oz. AFL gets double the crowds that the NRL (Rugby League) gets and Rugby Union gets even less than Rugby League. AFL for a season or 2 was averaging more crowds than the Premier League Soccer in England, but now we're back to 4th highest average crowds in the world. Rugby League fans like to claim they're the most popular sport in Oz, but stats don't lie. AFL Grand Final gets 100000+ every year and is the highest attended 1 day game in the world.

The AFL put out a series of videos last year called “best of the decade” (2010-1019). There’s a lot of good content to react to there. AFL doesn’t hand out copyright strikes either - probably because they want to grow awareness of the sport outside of Australia (we’re very isolated from the rest of the world).
