Ever wonder just how big an area they're talking about when someone mentions an "acre"? Sheep rancher Dan Macon gives us a little insight on just how much land it takes to make up an acre. He also offers some thoughts on how much corn and alfalfa can be grown on that much land.

Lynn Dickson I had to respond, because I watched the same video, saying it was hard to follow was an understatement. If you have anxiety issues, that video won't help. LOL Two minutes in and you want to start throwing something. It was nice of him to try to explain what an acre is, but he needed to go through a rehearsal first.

I've found during my time on this earth that for most of life's questions, asking a farmer will usually get you a great answer. They are usually a "Jack of all trades". Thank you farmers!!

One (1) square acre measures roughly 208.71 x 208.71 feet (43,560 square feet). My yard in town here measures just slightly over 1.2 acres. Viewed in relation to a standard American football field, an acre would start at the zero (0) yard line and extend from sideline to sideline (about 53.33 yards) to about the ten (10) yard line at the other end of the field.

soaringtractor Only because I just purchased a home a few years earlier and had to look it up myself just prior to that. Luckily, I copied it down and was able to simply paste it here.

soaringtractor That's a good chunk of land. The only "livestock" on my land is two large Great Pyrenees dogs who produce slobber and shed endless fur. LOL.

soaringtractor Sounds great to me. I've got the yards of six neighbors immediately bordering mine, with others bordering those, still others across the street, and similar. Privacy is hard to come by. That said, the property (home, etc) is better than average for this area. However, we're planning to sell it next year or soon after and try a different lifestyle in a more remote area.

soaringtractor All good advice. This certainly isn't our first move. We've been traveling (here and overseas) nearly all of our lives. We'll be researching everything before deciding on a final location. Take care, my friend.

Because it differs. Bushel of corn or soybeans... You see they differ in dimensions and weight, try to think of it as how many soybeans would fill a glass you use to drink water as opposed to corn or wheat.

A good answer to what is an acre or how big is an acre is to place four young ladies in bikinis, one on each corner of the plot, then have an aerial view taken by a drone camera from the proper height, and voila, you'll have millions of hits. Lol. Many of us have forgotten what a football field looks like in length or don't attend football games at all.

Why on earth would they choose such an arbitrary number of 43,560 square feet to equal one acre? Wouldn't it have been easier to just say 200' by 200' for the dimensions? Why 208.71' by 208.71'? Cool video, nonetheless!

+John Conmet correct. A mile square is 640 acres. also known as a Section. One quarter of that is 160 acres and 1/4 of that is 40 acres. you know like in "40 acres and a mule".

+Quinton "sheep" does tend to apply more to the march-in-step conservatives.... I can't tell you how many crazy lies I hear from people I know who are conservatives, stuff they hear on Facebook or some idiot just repeats to them. flock of sheep is another name for republicans
