When I installed my first network, netmask was not a case (we used casefull routing, but we didn't knew that back then). 1993 the netmask and (CIDR) came, and everything got more easy.

7:20 another way to think about it is 255 is 'full' and 0 is 'empty', you are specifying the amount of 'free space' in that 'slot' (octet). As we've specified 255 for the first 3 octets, there is no 'space' for that number to change as we've said that those 'slots' are full and it will be locked to those digits. Whereas for the final octet that we've specified as zero, we're saying that its 'empty' and the DHCP server can go ham and allocate what ever it likes in the 1-254 range. Obviously thats highly simplified and in reality its more nuanced than that, but it made it click in my head.

@7:32 The short explanation - The network portion of an i.p. address is just like the name of the street you live on and the host portion is just like the assigned house-number to the home you live in. OR Your home network is street in a world full of roads and your neighbors are the devices connected to that network. Thus, your devices have the same address, just different “house numbers”, in order to distinguish themselves from one another.

I have been interested and scared to enter a world I enjoyed but was intimidated by. The course is not " a one and done " but a great window into a deeper understanding of what and how the subject works. This is a great study guide/tutor to open up anyone to a whole new world or wormhole who is interested. I personally have 7 pages of notes and paused the video to absorb the information for class 1-2. Its a ton of great info and I want to thank Chuck for releasing and sharing this amazing information. Looking forward to this series Chuck. I'm a cybersecurity student but my previous educational background is programming based, not information systems. Networking concepts seem easy so asking for help/clarification from teachers or other students often feels like I might as well be asking "what is a computer?" You're good at explaining difficult subject matter to give people without the background a framework for further learning

Said 253 and got it right, only because I'm starting my own public cloud and the last couple weeks has been nothing but networking. Tip for anyone wanting to get started with public IP subnets, use the RIPE CIDR Chart to help with subnet masks.

Two things: 1. Thank you soooooo much for this video. This is TOP quality content. This was an amazing refresher on subnetting. I'm sitting up at 5am with my baby (sleep-schedule-confused one-month-old, the best!) and despite my sleep-deprived new-mom brain, I was still able to understand this perfectly. Amazing job Chuck! 2. Also, if you have DHCP for a network, don’t use the entire range! 11-240 is a good rule of thumb for a /24, so you can always add devices with a fixed IP to the network later!

Psst use a /23 subnet mask and you can have 512 IPs -2 of course.

I missed it too, I guessed 254. I forgot about the default gateway address. LOL

But 254 is correct for a /24 ip range. The zero is also an ip address. You have 256 possible IPs (0-255). And you need to subtract the broadcast and the network address, thats 256 minus 2 equals 254. The router/gateway is only required, if you want to leave your ip address range, so it is not a must have. However, like any other device, you will need to address it with an IP if added.

In school for cybersecurity so I watch a lot of videos like this to supplement my required reading, this is the most interesting and engaging one I've seen! You do such a good job keeping it fun and upbeat, I have seen so many that are detailed and explained well but are dry and can get really boring. I wonder if this video makes me more attentive to learning this concept because of all the quick jumps and transitions throughout the video. First off. Your style of teaching speaks to me and I thank you from the bottom of my soul. Second, for your question around the 10min mark. If the combinations can be 0-255 for each section of the address, wouldn't the answer be a equation of how many possibilities can come from X = (0-255), X.X.X.X. what am I missing other than the fact that default IP addresses are always the same out of the box with your hardware

Dear Network Chuck…. In the IT business, consistency is a must. I found the first episode of the series based on the title I saw in episode 6. How ever, I don’t necessarily find the episodes in between. There is at least one possibility, but I would put it to you to name each episode in a series with the same title, maybe with a subtitle and episode number. You aren’t the only one who has done this, but it sure helps to keep the series in order. It’s just a thought.

note: on linux, ifconfig is being replaced by ip addr

@tradde11 ifconfig is usually part of a package called net-tools which is usually installed with ifupdown which is being replaced with networkd and netplan these days. You can still install net-tools separately and use the old ifconfig client if you like.

I essentially knew nothing about IP addresses until 15 mins ago. This was explained so clearly and succinctly. I was able to understand and remember almost everything said. That's saying something for me.
