I think a big part of Sceptile's Winrate problem is that A He had a lot of bad matchups he had to be used in the FIRE Gym in Hoenn as a Treeko After all and B:For a portion of time after evolving Sceptile was unable to use Grass Type Moves and C:He had the disadvantage of having a longer running story arc planned for him so throughout all of Hoenn he was stuck as a Grovyle, not at his full potential even in the League which prbobably would have helped a lot

Loving how Ash’s ultimate team not only has one of each starter type, but the three starters are from different regions Also I really like how Infernape is plausible switch-in for Lucario, but the team might need to be reconfigured a little so it doesn’t contain 2 fire types

Reminder that Sceptile not only defeated a Darkrai. He defeated a Darkrai that apparently had never lost a fight. The anime states that Tobias beat all the gyms with only his Darkrai and Ash was the first person to push Tobias to his second mon. Even the guy who fought Tobias in the finals didn't manage that. Sceptile absolutely deserves a spot.

With Charizard Infernape and Incineroar all being worthy contenders for this team, along with Talonflame also being quite the solid Pokemon in it's own right, I think I'm starting to realise what the anime's favourite type is (Torkoal being a very large outlier).

I never thought about it before but Ash's Grass types have all been pretty solid with one or 2 things holding them back a bit. Bulbasaur probably hasn't seen much training from being Oak's park manager. Sceptile has the win rate problem, Bayleef can struggle somewhat beyond mid level battles, Snivy seems to be highly experienced but probably the only one out of the pile that would've super benefitted from even 1 evolution, Leavanny had a lot of potential but little usage and Rowlet has a bit of a sleeping problem.

Unfortunate about Leavanny. He, and Krookodile, are the best of the Unovan mon used by Ash but unfortunately suffer from under-usage common to the Gen 5 mons Ash collected

I agree with this largely, but with Lucario, your forgot something that makes him even better... he can use the Spirit Bomb Aura Sphere which is a mega powered Aura Sphere.

10:21 - Chimchar’s special Blaze is actually inherent, which was Paul’s sole reason for initially catching it. All Infernape’s special bond with Ash did was let him control Blaze effectively rather than succumb to abrupt fits of being a mindless berserker when beaten into the sort sometimes.

I feel like Krookodile could be a strong contender for that final spot. The guy was a powerhouse when it evolved. It’s got a very enticing moveset, too, having used Dig, Bite, Crunch, Stone Edge, Aerial Ace, and Dragon Claw. It barely even needs its team to cover most of its own weaknesses! Plus, a key factor in Ash’s skill as a trainer is through creative use of his team’s moves, and I always remember that one time Ash had Infernape use Dig as part of a strategy to remove Toxic Spikes and land a hit on a Ninjask. Applying that kind of creativity on a Pokémon more proficient at digging like Krookodile could be devastating.

The one you guys came up with years ago was Pikachu, Greninja, Krookodile, Snorlax, Glalie, and Charizard. Interesting to see how things have changed.

I like this team. But now I'm thinking about how neither Greninja nor Goodra are part of Ash's team anymore and now I'm questioning what the replacement for them could be.

It will find it difficult to make it to this team but I feel like Lycanroc needs to be on this team somehow as it won Ash its first regional league and was Ash's ace pokemon in Alola Plus it has the never before discovered dusk form

Going through and watching the entire series (just finished gold and silver), I would say Bayleef's win rate is less impressive. I can't recall too many battles where it performed exceptionally, and in some cases it still faltered. If Bayleef was added to a team with some of Ash's other closely bonded teammates I would be worried about it's personality getting in the way. In the anime Bayleef has this jealous feeling that makes it where any person or pokemon that gets close or shares a moment with Ash sends it into a rampage, usually towards Ash. If Bayleef saw Ash's battle bond with Greninja, mega evolution with Lucario, or even Ash hugging Pikachu like he does many times in the gold and silver anime, Bayleef could cause a ruckus that might hurt them as a team. I love Bayleef, but I think it still needs some growth before it can be considered. Bulbasaur is a great mediator pokemon, shown many times to stop ally pokemon fights and team squabbles, but it's small size and lacking moveset make it hard to back. I can't say anything for Sceptile, but based on his other choices I think it's the right pick. Torterra is another pokemon on Ash's team I'm unfamiliar with, but I can see why it might have been disregarded. It's really interesting to see the early "difficulty" choices for starters shown in the grass types. Many cite Grass/Bulbasaur as the "Easy" mode in Red/Blue since it does so well in the early battles but struggles later when you likely have teammates to pick up the slack. Here almost all grass types/starters Ash uses start great and end with more losses as they are unable to keep up with what they're up against. Not to say the Grass type starters are all bad, but it is interesting to see some of his starters follow that principle.

I’m a bit iffy with Goodra’s inclusion, since the only wins it ever got weren’t *that* impressive compared to the rest of the Pokémon on this team, but I overall agree with this!

I'm still not 100% on Goodra being here, but I can see why it is. It covers a lot of weakness. I would have thought Snorlax would have deserved a spot over it, but the resistances take a huge hit and you get a third weakness to fighting.

11:57 i throught and its between Torterra and Septile. The 2 deciding factors are 1. Torterra get Worse from Evolving and 2. Wether Mega Sep is on the Table. If Yes to Mega, Septile with its Dragon type makes it Resistant to Electric so its clear cut. But Mega Sep off the table means wether Grounds immunity to Elec out weighes Torterra’s Skill down grade. Also to note: both Mega Sep and Torterra give 4x Ice weakness so worse Ice defense is a given

IMHO, Leavanny might be an underrated pick. Leavanny had beaten several Pokémon it had a type disadvantage to, such as some wild Durant, Burgh’s Dwebble and Whirlipede (which was done as as a Sewaddle and evolved into Swadloon while fighting Whirlipede), Roxy’s Koffing, and almost beat her Whirlipede. The moves it learned are also pretty good with X-Scissor, Energy Ball, and Leaf Storm being pretty strong moves and String Shot is relatively strong in the world of the Anime.

I'd say Ash's best team is Pikachu, Sceptile, Greninja, Charizard, and Lucario. The 6th slot is a toss up depending on the situation, but those 5 are the auto includes.

It really shows how much he has grown and bring out the best out of his Pokémon. He really is a Pokémon master. Pikachu, Lucario, Ash-greninja, are all Pokémon that he has bonded and traveled. If I want to battle him I would need to borrow some of his and my family others too. On hand: Snowy, Megearna, and Nihilego. Borrow: Solagleo, Lycanroc, and my mother Clefable I’m using more of anime team. But with Ash Lycanroc, it’s a pokemon that he trained up and part of his champion team. I’m bringing out using a Ultra Beast and legendaries.

Im sorry, but i dont think Goodra should be on this team despite the dragon typing being a solid type to the team. I would have swapped it for another candidate like Solgelao (if he counts) or Snorlax potentially.

I think I'd take Melmetal over Goodra to cover gen 7 as well when he won the league + having a mythical is pretty nice. It can gigantamax as well. Goodra Dragonite Infernape Incineroar Krookodile and Snorlax are amazing back-ups.

For Ash Ketchum’s all star team, the last lineup that I recorded trying out was Melmetal, Mr. Mime, Donphan, Noivern, Sirfetch’d, and Incineroar. I didn’t consider Goodra nor Greninja, for these are Pokémon he’s officially released. Pokémon like Primeape and Squirtle, which are still technically under his own ownership though they’re under the control of another trainer I also didn’t consider, though I personally have a special place for Primeape. I also used sets recommended as the most competitively viable, though for some - such as Palpitoad and Bulbasaur - I created my own personalized sets. I won’t lie, I was last playtesting this team a while ago(it would seem as I still need to try Pidgeot) but I still hold favor for this final team. For such as yourself, in the considering purely from the apparent moveset and win/lose ratio from the anime, your choices seem the most logical - though I would not hold room for Ash’s officially released Pokémon, as I’ve said. Overall, a fairly nice team you've made, in the end.

Something that TGS Anime did when he did his series of duelist rankings (YGO) is doing a rank sort of the trainers based on different criteria, including not just win/loss ratio, but also number of duels attempted, giving the idea that the "best" duelist isn't someone who wins one duel and then never duels again. You could translate that as "battle experience" - a Pokémon who battles a lot may have an edge against a Pokémon who has few battles but won most of, if not, all of them.

You wouldn't believe how happy Goodra being on the team made me! Goomy is my favorite Pokémon and I always see it, and it's evolutions being crapped on, but using them for myself it has been so good! I try to get a Goomy as soon as possible when playing and I'm so glad that Ash got one! 😄 9:23 just incase something happens and Goodra gets removed.😅

Unless they choose to bring him back as the protagonist traveling every region and challenging their leagues for some reason, it sucks that we'll never get to see his unevolved and not-fully-evolved Pokémon ever evolve.

I think Sceptile’s bond with Ash is close to if not on the same level as Greninja and Lucario. Sceptile didn’t just beat Darkrai, it heard Ash’s pleas and broke Darkrai’s hold on him, which was something none of Ash’s other Pokémon managed to do in that battle, and considering that battle first time Tobias used a second Pokémon, it’s safe to say none of Barry’s Pokémon or any other Sinnoh league trainer’s Pokémon could either. And that’s not even Sceptile’s best feat! It might be the fastest Pokémon in the world! It chased down and caught a *speed form* Deoxys while using his energy to charge a Solar Beam!

I disagree with not choosing Bulbasaur given it’s insane experience and the fact that it can learn moves that Bulbasaur can’t physically learn, but I understand Sceptile. Great video!

It's a shame Snorlax couldn't join the team but I understand, it literally only has Normal type moves and Ice Punch for coverage.

I’m glad Goodra is on this list. I feel like it didn’t get enough time to shine being sent back to the swampland (can’t remember the name of the place) and not showing up until later in the Kalos league tournament. Also, who doesn’t love Goodra?

Personally, if ash continues to make future appearances, I would love to see the continuation of him rotating his team around. I feel like his greatest strength is growing so close to each of his Pokémon (minus gen 5 I feel like we really lacked with some of those team members) and I would love to think he values them as strong enough to each take part on his team once in a while.

I'd always think what his best team would be and I basically thought up the same thing only swapping Goodra for Lycanrock or Infernape just out of hype ness and giving some love to each generation of his teams

A while ago I was trying to figure out Ashs' best team to maintain champion statis. Only difference between this team and mine is Goodra. My other member of his ultimate team was Melmetal. 2 reasons for my choice. 1, I wanted to mix his teams that helped him gain championship titles. And 2, like a lot of people ash has taken on a mythical or legendary is sometimes an X factor that turns the tide.

Haven't seen anything from this channel in a long time, and wow, BKToby got a glow-up at some point, was not prepared.

Before watching mine would be with slighty updated for gen 9 like ash went to pladea with his beat team with all gimmicks. Z-move Pikachu, G-max Charizard, Battle Bond Greninja ( although swap cut for night slash lol), Tera Tertorra (maybe Tera Rock for Stone Edge boost and complete type weakness swap), Mega-Lucario, and Naganadel for legendary/ultra beast. A physical, special, and 4 mixed or could go either way Pokemon of various offensive and defensive types, room to move around who's going to tera, mega, z move, or G-max with at least 2 choices for each and Pokemon of various shapes and sizes if that comes into play somehow. Plus special bonds with like 4 or 5 of them. Imo his best mix of power and adaptability. But if I had to give him subs or another 6 team of 6 to slot in prolly: Dracovish/Lapras( if Sceptile is mega), melmetal, Gengar, Heracross, Sceptile, infernape.

I feel like focussing on the win/loss ratio too much might be a mistake. For starters, evolved Pokémon have grown a lot stronger than when they were in their first or second stage and it might be worth just checking their last ten matches to see how well they've been doing. Sceptile is the prime example. It beat a Darkrai in Sinnoh but probably lost a lot more battles when it was just a Treecko.

If you ever want to tackle this question again, maybe have Ash's best possible Team in each generation. Granted, I doubt that Gen 5 would change his best team from Gen 4.

so i did this as well, but used a different site called mypokemonteam which lets you put in moves so they can calculate coverage. i put in my own team as well as the video team and found something interesting. my team is pikachu, swellow, incineroar, gengar, palpatoad and sceptile. i went with them because it gave more coverage and more defensive capabilities. so I added them all together and here are the results: my team: coverage: 65. defense: 15.5 - video team: coverage: 49 defense: 13

I like to look at more than just win rates basically how well they done in battles even if they didn't win & other areas of strength so my list will include other pokemon you didn't mention e.g. dracovish (impressed with its movepool & its somewhat "awakening" power during the final match of the master 8) & sirfetched (it's strong enough to fight Cynthia's garchomp & almost beat it)

That Darkrai feat for Septile is a lot more impressive then you are making it out to be..... remember, it's not just any old Darkrai, it was a Darkrai that soloed literately EVERY OTHER CHALLENGE in the Sinnoh League by itself, EXCEPT for Ash, because Septile stopped it. That Darkrai's ONLY loss was against Ash's Septile... and I doubt it was getting softened up much by the folks right before it, Torkal was one of them and it was healing up with Dream Eater.

Worth noting that Ash may have displayed some bond shenanigans with Sceptile as well, though not as much as Greninja, Pikachu, Lucario, or even Infernape, he was able to seemingly will Sceptile awake against Darkrai.

After watching, I started wondering, "What team would be best against certain trainers?" Against Lance, Steven (other than champion team), Wallace, Cynthia (other than champion team), Alder, Iris, Diantha, and Leon (other than champion team).

Oh, I am bummed that the big guy didn’t make the roster but I get it. Ash doesn’t use them that much.

Ash also has a rowlett which seemed to be missed when listing his grass Pokémon. I don’t think it should make his best team, but I was still surprised to see it missing.

One line alone "We can't know for sure unless we go back and watch every single battle these Pokemon have taken part in." Yes, that's EXACTLY what needed to be done. Such a strong focus on win rates and types really shows neither of you truly understands what you're talking about when it would come to making Ash's strongest team in the anime. These arguments might be nice for GF developers to create an NPC Ash in like a Battle Tower format or something or stick him at the top of Glaseado Mountain as a post-game boss fight, but NOT to create his actual strongest team. Who cares if Goodra beat a bunch of jobbers in XYZ? Ash's Dragonite wholly outclasses it in battles. Who cares about Primeape's win rate? Ash's Sirfetch'd is in a league of its own and is unfortunately overshadowed by the favoritism of Lucario, but Ash's Sirfetch'd made it possible to overcome Cynthia's Garchomp, it made it possible for Ash to defeat Leon as well. Ash's Journeys team might have the least amount of screen time overall, but they're arguably contenders for Ash's strongest team by default, as they're the ones that overcame Leon the undefeated gigachad and Cynthia the #2 best trainer in the world. With some minor tweaks allowing for Ash-Greninja, perhaps in place of Dracovish, and Ash's strongest team should really consist more of Pikachu, Greninja(cutting out Dracovish, who is still a worthwhile contender otherwise), Mega Lucario(unfortunately cutting out Sirfetch'd), Charizard/(unfortunately cutting out the technically stronger Infernape), Sceptile/Gengar/Dragonite and THEN take those strongest Pokemon's types into consideration and be left with Pi, AG, ML, Ch, Ge + Dr if but Ground and Rock become a bit noticeable even if covered by other mons, or Sc + Dr if a mutual ice weakness is of no concern because Sceptile then helps remedy the other remaining Ground and Rock weaknesses well enough that it wouldn't be a big deal for the team. The fact that Ash's pathetic Bayleef was even brought up in the same league as Bulbasaur and Sceptile because of its stupid winrate is telling of the ignorance needed to put it on the list. Bulbasaur earned its high winrate with experience, and Sceptile is known to be powerful in spite of its winrate, Bayleef is unreliable despite its winrate, when the going gets tough some mons just don't make the cut. You're ignoring Major League Baseball players for Little League players because the Little League players had more wins and made more runs? Come off it.

Sceptile did not beat a Darkrai in the Hoenn League. Maybe you mean the Sinnoh League (I don’t know myself, since I am watching through the DP anime for the first time at the moment), since I know that he is on Ash’s team against Tobias.

I was confused for a bit why Krookodile was wasn’t here at first as with Ash it only lost its first battle, but then I realized they must be using its battles it had before owned by Ash. Which sucks because Krookodile got eliminated, but I guess fair

This is a pretty solid team, the only thing I would argue against is how Goodra lost quite a bit after it's return from the wetlands for the Kalos league, but we all know it was to give Greninja more spotlight.

whenever someone brings up Torterra losing a lot I often say... yeah obviously. sure in multiple fights he had the advantage but he was also fight some E4 threats or Stronger: Berthas Hippowdon, Paul's Drapion, Paul's Honchkrow, Palmers Rhypherior and Volknerker Electivire (IIRC)

This is definitely his most balanced team for sure. Charizard covers for the Ground types that would challenge Pikachu and Lucario, Pikachu covers for Water types, Goodra is his pseudo legendary with a huge move pool, Sceptile and Greninja are the fast power sweepers and Lucario’s Steel typing resists so many types and Charizard also covers for Grass and Bug types against Greninja and Sceptile and they cover Charizard’s Rock weakness.

Although I am a major fan of Infernape. I can't argue with this team as being Ash's best.

I agree on you about picking sceptile although many say that sceptile won against darkrai because of the help of other pokemon people forget tobias's darkrai is not just any ordinary darkrai it survives super effective hit and repeatedly attacks back with Dream Eater and Dream Eater also hit heracross and obviously it's a powerful super effective attack which goingt to heal darkrai a lot Sceptile manages to get up from the dark void is a really insane feat too Leaf blade looks like a critical hit on darkrai and it shows an advantage in using a sceptile because he has a move with a ratio of high critical chance! Sceptile survive against darkrai's Ice beam is also an excellent feat, considering how weak the defensive stat and it was a super effective hit from darkrai too Also sceptile is super fast he freaking Catch deoxys speed form like...hello?!

Pikachu, Lucario, Charizard, Sceptile, and Greninja...these are the five that everyone consistently agree on, because they ARE Ash's five best Pokemon. What's REALLY interesting, is the SIXTH slot because it's ALWAYS different (depending on who you ask). I've heard cases for Heracross, Krookodile, Dragonite, and now Goodra.

A big problem with this team is the lack of scaling. For instance while yes Sirfetch’d and the rest of Ashes Journeys team has a low win rate compared to the others, you could argue that since some of there losses come from champion level Pokémon such as Cynthia’s Garchomp and Leon’s Rillaboom the win rate system may be flawed. For example Sirfetch’d fought very well against one of the strongest Pokémon in the show being Cynthia’s Garchomp. I just don’t see Goodra accomplishing that. Since Sirfetch’d doesn’t work well typing wise due to lucario I would recommend using Gengar since it has been very powerful fighting against some of the worlds strongest Pokémon and it can Gigantamax.

Think winrate is a bad indicator, as a lot of fights aren't done at their current/peak power level, think feats would have been much better choice, a win/tight loss against a legend, is much more impressive then 50 wins against ratata.

Pikachu doesn't often lose, but when it does it's against a level 5 Snivy.

Definitely agree with the first four, those four are ash's core pokemon. As for the other two pokemon, it could be one of many depending on who his opponent is.

When I did this thought experiment I ended up with the same team except Dragonite instead of Goodra. Pikachu, Greninja and Lucario are indeed just the first choices because of their special connection to Ash, then take one of the pseudolegendary dragons, I went with Dragonite kind of because it was on an actual winning team and kind of because double types just have a general advantage. After that get one of Ash's superpowered fire types and for the last slot get Sceptile because fire water grass cores are great and Ash has used them a lot. I ended up Picking Charizard mostly because the list of weaknesses lined up a bit better than with Infernape, even with Dragonite already being a flying type as well. But there's good arguments for both Goodra and Infernape (and even Incineroar) to be used instead. Sceptile seems like clearly the best grass choice though. If you want to replace Sceptile, just ditch the concept of a fire water grass core.

I'm glad charizard was brought in, cause despite its lower win rate, it has one of the highest battle prowess' out of all of ash's Mon. If I recall, in unova, it fought iris' dragonite and actually tanked a dragon rush, dragonites strongest attack, without even flinching

Super Blaze was something Infernape had naturally. Though if they ever turned Bond Phenomenon into a full on game mechanic (it's not even that difficult) I'd say Gen 4 starters would be the second starter set to receive Bond Forms with the first being Gen 6.

I think that you can’t rely souly on win rate and have to take into account different situations each Pokémon had. Also ash might not have access to good ra or greninja and some Pokémon might be out of training. On paper with pure stats this is the corrects team but you have to add in canonical context in to it as well imo

Im honestly curious what his best Potential Team is. Like if Bulbasaur or Bayleaf evolved and got some better coverage could one of them take Sceptiles place? Or if his Gible evolved to Garchomp would it be strong enough to take Goodras Place. I think these things are fun to consider bur realisitically he has so much potential for so many of his Pokemon that this would be near impossible to figure out.
