The Atlanta Falcons see Michael Penix as their quarterback of the future, but what exactly is his best trait? Host Aaron Freeman discusses whether Penix's aggressiveness to throw downfield qualifies as a "superpower." He breaks down Penix's strengths, weaknesses, and potential scheme fit in the NFL.
Later, he breaks into the nature vs. nurture debate surrounding Penix. Can he refine his mechanics and footwork to improve his accuracy? Is the Falcons' development plan a good one? What does the future look like for Penix in Atlanta? Finally, he tries to find a range of player comparisons for what Penix could be in the NFL to discuss his floor and ceiling as a pro.

Aaron. The only AKA that actually fits for you is Negative Nancy which you don’t mention anymore. So do you actually think that Mariotta, Heineke, Ridder, and Woodside are a better QB room over the past 2 years is better than Cousins,MPX, and whoever else they replace Taylor with? Quit the what if’s and 5 years speculation and let’s relish the fact that we have one of the best QB rooms in the NFL. Drop the AKAs. I am tired of hearing about something you are not.

One of those games Kirk missed before last season's injury was due to Covid. His famous, "If I die I die!" after refusing to get vaccinated. Kirk isn't a huge guy compared to a lot of NFL QBs but he's been a tank. There were times he was just abused by opposing defensive lines due to Minnesota's poor guard and center play.

Valid hypotheticals but I think the negatives are fixable, for example cleaning up the footwork to be more accurate in the intermediate game which he’ll have to be, Washington offense really wanted to push the ball. He does have maybe the strongest arm in the class which I think isn’t the end all be all but is a plus, accuracy and neck up matter more but he seems to have that too. The what will the roster look like in a couple years question is also valid but they’ve for the moment figured out the QB. The rest of the puzzle pieces are much easier to put together if they hit there. I certainly think the tape speaks for itself in terms of being in a tier of Daniels and maye, he easily in that conversation if not leading. The injury history is the biggest unpredictable part. But we’ll just have to wait and see. Ultimately I’m in favor of sitting a rookie QB for a year, so while two isn’t ideal I’d rather have one waiting than not.

I'd probably rank Penix's arm 5th best in this class. But that's whatever. The other things are "easier" to figure out but they aren't "easy." Otherwise the Falcons wouldn't still be struggling to build a capable pass rush after a decade. I think given my view of him as a prospect, sitting Penix is a good strategy. Gives him the best chance to fix some of the mechanics stuff I discussed in the pod. But I think a lot of work has to be done in the intervening years roster wise.

@@LockedOnFalcons One pass rusher doesn't equate on making the playoffs. You have better chances when the QB position is solid. Trusting God that Cousins has recovered fully from the injury. The only way to avoid having a playoff run derailed (if the unthinkable happens) is to have an outstanding back up. Last year 66 QBs started games.
@geraldsmith1916

@@LockedOnFalcons yeah I get that. I just do not have as high an opinion on Maye specifically as you seem to. If Daniels or Maye were serious considerations if they fell, I think Penix was justified. Maye is young with upside but as far as tape, I don’t think it’s better than Penix. None of the QBs really got me over the moon bedsides Caleb, it’s a crap shoot as always. But I’d certainly rather solve QB vs a pass rush or anything else. Not that it’s easy but it’s certainly WAYYY easier than a QB without a doubt. They pretty much dedicated the rest of the draft to dline with promise so I was satisfied. Wasn’t a big fan of pass rush talent in the top 10 this year, preferred a trade down but I definitely see the vision. Will it work? We’ll see how it plays out.

Your intro was perfect except you are too close to close the loop. Cousins is a pro and will be allowed to be. In Y2 it'll get interesting because Penix definitely was the best QB in college. So it seems like cousins is the guy for 2 years. And Penix is after that. We owe Cousins $100MM. We don't owe him self actualization.

Fields completed 60% of his deep passes to D.J. Moore last season and only 25% to Mooney. Deep completion rate to Mooney was 33% in 2022 and 39% in 2021. Hard to buy the issue was Fields.

I hope you see this post. Kirk Cousins was not given an absorbent contract. He has an average cap hit of $25 million per year. That's what a fringe top ten QB gets paid. Mahomes gets $49 million a year? That's the floor of what elite QBs are now getting. Next, Fontenot at his pre-draft press conference signaled that he was definitely taking a QB in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th round. He and Morris said after they signed Cousins, they were not done addressing the QB spot. Aaron let's move forward. Thanks.

@@vernonoatesjr9910 Fields was actually consensus QB2 that year, with majority of people liking Wilson as QB3. I personally ranked Wilson as QB4 that year. I thought Wilson's major flaws were his overreliance on off-structure plays, not attacking the middle of the field, and his struggles to handle pressure. All have been issues that followed him to the NFL.
