I have put a comment. There was absolutely no need to sell the port. It was a great investment that'd have benefitted the country for generations. But the govt. that came to power in 2015 wanted to deprive the people of reaping the benefits out of a project by a previous govt. If there was any loss, they could've easily taken policy decisions that would increase the revenue. Instead, they went on to sell it.

Sri lanka has already gone through years of dooms day after independant and getting their democrazy. But since then nothing had changed until recently. The development of the country has pretty much staying stagnant for years. Their train, buses and road condition has pretty much remained the same since WWII. Only until recently years that you can start seeing changes in the city and some development in certain part of the country and China plays a major role in developing sri lanka.

Hambantota is an idle port and China has complete freedom to run it till 2118. No tax and complete free zone. China can fix wages of sri lankan workers. China can do mainteinence work by chinese companies. IDIOTS do not understand that the new port will attract their existing govt COLOMBO port's traffic. So after 2118, since loan is not repayed, the land and whole port will be Chinese territory forever. CHINA IS A BUYER of property abroad, but NOT an investor of MANUFACTURING industries abroad. What he had done was taking loans from everywhere possible put 50% of the money in his bank account and use the rest to build infrastructure..That cannot be called development.. I can go to a bank, take a loan and buy a Rolls Royce but eventually i will run out of money and not be able to pay the interested and maintain the vehicle.. The loans they offer have a lower interest rate than what western powers would offer and if the country cannot repay it than they lease the assets for a certain period of time. Sure, builders and staff are from China but a % of the profits will go to the hos country. Greece leased 3 of its biggest ports and even negotiated 50/50 staff ratio. We can agree or disagree over this all we want but at the end of the day the result of these deals are more preferable than doing nothing.

If SriLanka asks India to match China in investments it is impossible. We also had a terrible government in power at the moment with no decisions being made and $1 billion is not a lot of money for India and could have given it to SriLanka but there might be other reasons why India denied. May be Rajapaksha wanted something extra Sri Lanka has chosen short term money over long term relationship with a true friend. It is not like India is going to stay poor forever. SriLankans could have grown together as one neighbourhood.

They have a right to be concerned. Sri Lankan politicians arent only trying to get sri lanka out of debt. its also selling off bits of the island making themselves rich in the process. They should be worried about the negative impacts of this alliance, but they dont. All they see are dollar signs. At least India has the foresight to see how this could go horribly wrong for SL and India and be only beneficial to China.
