I am interested in using life's molecular building blocks to create new tools for science and medicine. Jason Brown and I made this animation to provide a basic introduction to my research in bionanotechnology.

Wonderful, I worked with DNA origami as well! Moreover I used AFM to perform nanografting of thiolated, 44-nt-long oligonucleotides over ultra-flat gold surfaces.

Great job, this animated format is really helpful in making the subject much more approachable and less dry. Thank you for the effort.

koocat has a good point re: awareness of the fact that your lecture is going to be animated... part of the beauty of the RSA Animate videos is the way the artist often pokes gentle fun at certain turns of phrase while still upholding the basic message. If you're writing your script specifically to be animated, you miss out on that a bit.

We recorded the video with a Canon DLSR and used After Effects and an old version of Final Cut Pro for editing. The audio was captured with a condenser mic and Mackie Onyx Blackjack USB adapter. That was in 2010... today I would probably just get something like a Blue Yeti.

ANYONE: Thoughts on creating transistors with DNA? ...i recently read an article which basically-from what i could tell- said: wires: DNA, and electrons: RNA polymerase. And these were constructed in ways that emulated logic gates in a computer. So, does this mean that we could -in theory- assemble enough DNA in a way which resembles a computer with similar capabilities?

So is it necessary to get an undergrad in nanotechnology? Then get a graduate in bio-systems?
@smdnano
@smdnano 7 жыл бұрын
For undergrad I'd recommend traditional quantitative majors such as CS, biology, or physics, and then get hands-on research experience during the summers. Apply to grad schools once you've published at least once and somewhat know what you're getting into...

Is it possible to create life using nanomachines then? If nanomachines can be created using sythesized DNA, then can it program to function like a cell? With that, a body composed of nanomachines would make you function like a human and robot at the same time, giving a person enhanced capabilities and immortality. I'm no Scientist nor do I learn Science now, so I know it sounds silly. I would want know if it's a thereotically possible thing to do though.
@raulespejo2587

immortality is not possible
@KeltorRochridge
@KeltorRochridge 8 жыл бұрын
+Chon Pak Theoretically a lot of that is possible. The problem though is that we really have very minimal knowledge of DNA. Yes we know that there are certain codons that code for certain amino acids to make certain proteins, but there's a lot more to DNA and cells that we don't understand or can't replicate yet. And we always have to be careful changing a system that we don't understand (in fact, the more you understand biological systems, the more you realize how enhanced we really are, and changing that usually only makes things worse), but I wouldn't say that things like giving immortality are necessarily impossible. Maybe they're far-fetched, but as we learn more about biological systems, we will find out just what we can make with them.

So if I took classes on this (theres actually a bionanotechnology class at my community college, believe it or not), would it later involve me doing stuff like...making nanobots that would improve immune systems or improve muscle strength, etc? From what you are talking about, it sounds like this field could also lead to jobs involving genetic engineering.

How do you put DNA into a computer?
@michalkropiewnicki133
@michalkropiewnicki133 8 жыл бұрын
+Lynda Murray Bioinformatics. One can use a sequencer to sequence a DNA sample and change the way we can look at this biological sample, going from a real DNA to a file in a computer which is like a text file which we can now manipulate and make such nano robots

Biotech is more general, and already an established industry. Bionano is what we're calling our niche sub-specialty focused on engineering with molecular building blocks. Once bionano commercial applications become available, they will probably be considered under the biotech umbrella.

not bad for your first try :) - Although the dialog should have more flow. there's no real reason to write the question on the screen and say it at the same time. also the success of RSAnimate is that most of the videos are from prerecorded sources such from a large lecture hall. its just a man speaking to a actual crowd. when you recorded your dialog you were clearly well aware that everything you said was going to somehow be animated on a whiteboard.. that conscious awareness is evident

Will Bionanotechnolofy ultimately make pharmaceutical industry defunct?
@smdnano
@smdnano 7 жыл бұрын
As long as people are willing to pay for medicine, the pharmaceutical industry will persist. Improved drugs based on bionanotechnology will likely supplant existing products, as well as create entirely new options for patients with diseases that currently have no good treatments available. There are many related ethical questions to consider along the way, such as how to ensure these treatments will be affordable and made widely accessible to patients.
