Yes solid tie is best for more formal. What I like to do is wear a solid tie or bow tie that compliments my dates dress.

Jeff Tallon Yes it is ok to rent a tux. If you have a charcoal grey or dark navy suit that would also work. If you have neither then look at the cost of purchasing a charcoal grey suit versus renting a tux and make the best decision between those two! Hope this helps!

I'm going to a wedding soon and since I recently lost over 40 pounds none of my clothes fit anymore. I'm taking your advice and buying a charcoal suit.
