horses crib for a reason. you don't cure a broken leg by taking aspirin until you can't feel it anymore; you have to solve the actual problem, not cure the symptoms.

But if they learnt to do it as foals or young horses from previous owners its hard to change

@@silverkitty2503 They don't do that though. Someone already posted a good explanation here 11 years ago: "Cribbing is not a learnt behaviour, it is a stereotypic behaviour which is used as a coping mechanism and as such it is unethical to stop a horse cribbing. you can reduce it by means of different management styles, but trying to stop a horse cribbing can cause it to become stressed and is not ethical." Or this one: "Horses do not learn stereotypical behaviors form other horses, that's a myth refuted by science many times. Stereotypical behaviors are usually a symptom of welfare issues and bad management and bad management usually affects many horses so it can look like they learn from each other."

Any horse owner with a cribber should consult a vet to see if there are any ulcers or other digestive tract issues that are causing the horse to crib. i have heard that cribbing can be the horse's way of dealing with stomach pain (like with ulcers).

Well yeah. But that doens't mean that solving the problem will solve the behaviour ...all that stuff can heal but once the horse has the habbit it will be a lifelong habbit more than likely ...and if they had no space as young horses etc it doesn't matter about their new home they will still do it

Horses Crib for a reason, usually something gastro-intestinal. I have a horse that's cribbing and she's being treated for ulcers and it's stopping on it's own. Don't mask the problem with other things, treat the problem and don't worry about all the extra crap.

It seems to me, those of you don't like horses, don't understand them. They are very affectionate, need love, attention, grooming and exercise! Everyday! Sort of like BIG dogs. Really!
@silverkitty2503

I wouldn't say they are like big dogs. Dogs like dens ...horses like to be out and about always doing something. Dogs sleep a lot ..horses barely sleep ...

Why a horse needs a muzzle halter? It doesn't stop it hell it would make the problem worse. I wouldn't let my horses stay in the stall for a long periods of time or have them tied up to make them stand there for a long time. That rope is way to short to begin with they can't move their heads or see what's going on.

Horses can't burp or expel air from their digestive tract other than farting =] They also can't throw up or anything else. Feed and air only go DOWN A horse's throat (and of course thru their airway, where they can of course expel air...)

1, Don't let your horse watch another horse crib, especially if your horse is young. 2. If your horse is putting it's mouth on objects, such as metal corral bars, trying to figure out how to crib, spray the object(s) with the product "Bitter Apple" or soapy water. Repeat daily until you can remove the stimulus to crib.

HAHAHA yep, let's let our horses wear down their teeth so they're unable to graze when they're older, just like a friend of mine let her horse do. He can no longer graze with the other horses, and stands in the middle of the pasture looking sad and forlorn, OR spends his time cribbing on the fence! He is unable to graze b/c his top teeth are worn down so badly. Cribbing should be stopped for a horse's own health. It can cause ulcers, stomach and intestinal problems, not to mention dental issues

Horse's start cribbing because somewhere in their lives they didn't have access to a salt block. Salt is an extremely important mineral for horses, that they need because of how much horses tend to sweat. First they will start to lick the metal bars because they are salty, then they start biting on the bars and pulling on the bars and all of a sudden they created something that gives them a sort of high by doing so. And once this cribbing starts it becomes a habit that usually can't be broken. It has nothing to do with being bored, anxiety or their breeds or stomach issues. This all has to do with a time in a horses life, where they had no access to salt and it affected the horses in this way.

@ladyfarrier5949

Cribbing and wind sucking are different. Both cause damage to the teeth over time. Cribbing is often due to nutritional deficiencies... but not always, and they will chew and destroy wood or whatever they find. But wind sucking gives them endorphins.... basically they're a drug addict looking to get high. So wind sucking gets them high. Cribbing is just chewing and destroying whatever they get their mouth on.... but wind sucking doesn't typically damage what they grab as bad.... and they often go to the same place to hold and wind suck.... but both damage their teeth.

This videos information is outdated and should no longer be followed. Cribbing in horses is caused by high cortisol levels. Attempting to prevent cribbing has a much higher mortality rate than allowing it to happen.
