Individuals with cyclothymic disorder have symptoms of depression and hypomania but have never experienced a full mood episode.
Although there are no mood episodes, it involves a longstanding pattern of mood instability or what's sometime called "stable instability."
People with cyclothymic disorder are seen by others as moody, unpredictable, and unreliable. However the condition often goes undiagnosed as individuals might not realize they're experiencing symptoms of a mental illness.

It’s great that you talk about this diagnosis. It took me way to long to realize that I needed help because my symptoms was so “light” and I thought they were because of my ADD. It wasn’t until years later when my symptoms had gotten way worse that I went to a doctor and I got diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I never would’ve guessed that was the case because of my misconceptions of the illness. I thought you had to have suicidal thoughts to be bipolar and I was scared of dying, and thought I would die every time I heard a plane fly over our house (and I live near the airport so that is often). So I really think it’s great that more people talks more about mental health, so people can get help faster.

My cyclothymic condition hugely affects my own view of myself. I cycle between thinking I am just a horrible, cold and manipulative person to thinking I am a latter day saint. Neither of these extremes in my thought patterns correspond to objective reality, but both are convincing to me when I am experiencing them.

Cyclothymia is a horrible illness to put up with (when living with someone who's suffering it) ,moods go up and down, up and down , nothing is ever normal, no family event can ever be normal.

my partner has cd and shes like mid "episode" right now. she calls it feeling "foggy" when this happens and feels things that she usually never would and gets mad at me for things she would otherwise know aren't true "misinterpreting something I say for example". thanks for the explanation I'm trying to learn more about it for her. i dont know why this is treated as mild the condition is a nightmare for her and almost destroyed her uni. thanks for spreading awareness

I've been looking for something that explains how I've always been feeling and this seems to be it. I go through cycles but to be fair my low periods are always triggered by specific problems or people in my life, I'm not sure if this still qualifies as a disorder. My family are very dysfunctional and both parents I'm sure suffer from depression. I feel a lot worse when I am around them, becoming more stable when far from them. Definitely lack of sleep or drinking alcohol makes it worse so I don't drink anymore and try to sleep as well as possible. I would love to know if this is me or if it's an external influence i.e my family that are the root cause of this.. I will continue to observe myself to get some answers. thank you for this video

I know this reply is late but it could be BPD? Or simply you're sensitive to negative influences, like most of us. Wish you all the best xxx

I grew up with parents with mental illness too, it causes Childhood PTSD or C-PTSD so that could be at the root of course. Doesn't mean you can't also have CD. I have a feeling I have CD too and it seems to flair up when my trauma is triggered so... one feeds into the other methinks!

You can actually have Hypomanias that are either high or mild, but you will always have mild or moderate depression.

Been diagnosed with CD. But it's hard because I have high manic symptoms and some depression my manic episode can last weeks to months with a couple days off mid lows. My Dr is saying cyclothymia but is doing more research due to my high manic episodes

So there's hypomanic symptoms, but not an actual episode/altered state. So. An emotional rollercoaster without of the flashy thrills (mania) or lows (major depression) of Bipolar disorder. Did I get that right? _________ I'm currently trying my best to get myself tested for this disorder, since it best matches the "destructive but bland" emtional rollercoaster that I'm on LOL. Not one of therapists I've seen has taken my suspicions seriously. Instead, they're sending me to get a neuropsychiatric evaluation for freaking AUTISM. (No offense intended for anyone on the spectrum. I'm just upset about given such an inaccurate preliminary diagnosis.) I absolutely believe you that this "manageble" mood disorder has been grossly overlooked by researchers. It's easier to just call someone a sensitive lazy brat. :/ I honestly wish I had something more obviously wrong with me, like that stupid diagnosis of autism, because maybe then my family would be more understanding of the limbo I'm living in. Not quite a hell, but it certainly feels like one all the same. Thank you for making this video.

Usually when you stand up to their mood swings this can work - or can set them raging even more. If you get into a relationship with a cyclothymic - run for the hills.

No offense but i think this lady who is telling us we HAD to have certain things (conditions) as a child in order to have cyclothymia is misinformation, imho. I have cyclothymic symptoms & even was diagnosed by one doctor of psychiatric medicine as having cyclothymia and i do NOT have bipolar or bipolar type 2, yet I'm on lithium. Maybe I'm missing something here or misunderstood her. Thank for sharing this video, it does help some. 🙏
