SPEED ABUSE
“Speed” is a street name for various stimulant drugs that teens, young adults and others use to feel more alert and focused, and in some cases, to feel high.
Some people also use various forms of speed to reduce their appetite. Types of speed include:
Amphetamines (used to treat ADHD, narcolepsy and depression)
Methamphetamine (a powerful stimulant street drug)
Methamphetamine is much more potent and faster-acting than amphetamine, but both types of drugs involve serious risks.
Unfortunately, many teens and young adults take speed in the form of amphetamine pills without a prescription in order to improve their performance in academics, sports, and other areas.
Both types of speed are also taken recreationally, often mixed with other drugs. Despite the sought-after, short-term effects of some forms of speed, all forms of speed are dangerous and addictive.
Prescription drugs used as speed include:
Adderall
Dexedrine
DextroStat
Dexosyn
Speed goes by street names such as:
Beans
Beanies
Black Beauties
Christmas Trees
Dexies
Eye-openers
Pep pills
Wake-ups
Street names for methamphetamine include:
Crank
Chalk
Glass
Go
Ice
Redneck cocaine
Tina
Tick-tock
Scootie
Spoosh
Yellow Powder
Effects and Risks of Speed
Speed makes the central nervous system more active than normal, increasing alertness, sensory perception and mood. When the effects wear off, users feel exhausted or depressed. As a result, they often feel a strong craving for more. This cycle can lead to physical tolerance, physical or psychological dependence and addiction.
The short-term effects of speed that users seek include:
Heightened energy
Heightened awareness
Excitement
Euphoria (pleasure)
Increased focus
Better concentration
However, the side effects of these drugs far outweigh the benefits. These include:
Headache
Dry mouth
Nausea
Loss of appetite
Loss of focus
Fever
Aggression
Anxiety
High blood pressure
Rapid or irregular heart rate
Long-term health risks of speed include:
Anorexia
Urinary tract infection
Stroke
Psychosis
Heart attack and other heart problems
Paranoia
Depression
Brain damage
Methamphetamine is especially addictive and dangerous. Meth can cause permanent brain damage, especially to the areas of the brain that manage emotions and memory. Other long-term effects of meth use are:
Emotional instability
Cognitive problems
Anxiety, depression
Insomnia
Mood swings
Aggression
Hallucinations/ psychosis
Skin sores
Malnutrition, weight loss
Dental problems (known as meth mouth)
Damage to vital organs
Stroke
How Young People Use Speed
Young people who want to improve their academic or sports performance tend to take Adderall and other prescription stimulants by simply swallowing them in their pill form. People who use speed recreationally tend to crush the pills and snort the powder, causing a more intense but shorter-lasting high. Meth can be snorted, smoked, injected or swallowed.
Signs and Symptoms of Speed Abuse
If you’re worried that your child might be using speed, here are some warning signs to watch for:
Seemingly boundless energy.People under the influence of speed often have a sense of heightened awareness and energy, and they feel like they can do anything.
Unexplained weight loss and/or loss of appetite.Speed can increase users’ metabolism and reduce their appetite.
Emotional instability.People who use speed can fluctuate between feeling great under the influence of the drug and feeling down once its effects wear off.
Loss of interest in activities.People who use speed recreationally may lose interest in friends and activities they once enjoyed. (However, people who use stimulants for their effects on school or sports performance tend to continue their interest in those activities.
Hyperactivity.People under the influence of speed can be irritable, restless and fidgety.
Skin sores. Some users of the methamphetamine form of speed have the sensation of itchy skin, so they often scratch until they have developed sores.
Dental problems.Methamphetamine users can develop dry mouth, resulting in tooth decay.

Relapsed today after 3 years, no one has ever known I was addicted to anything, I’m only 19 and was the preppy kid in school, I’m severely disappointed in myself regardless of how my mental health has been, I ended up dumping the rest in the toilet, I needed to watch this. I can do better, so can all of you who are struggling, don’t do it, it’s not worth it!

Don't be ashamed yourself for having a relapse, be proud of yourself for fighting your disease and get back on the wagon. Always get back on the wagon no matter how many times you fall off. Don't be afraid to give up people places and things to go to treatment. Material things come much faster and easier in recovery. Sell that house and go to treatment! Leave that girl and go to treatment! Quit that job and go to treatment! If you don't you're probably prolonging the inevitable. You can get everything back and more

Relapse is part of recovery/ detox etc recovering substance abusers get too caught up on the longevity- time frame of their sobriety like it's some kind of trophy but to have a balanced, realistic outlook on the situation like being a 'responsible' recreational user could prove to be a better option...however if you're hell-bent on total sobriety,a good start would be to avoid triggers that could spark the relapse, good luck

coffee withdrawal is 100 times milder than an amphetamine withdrawal
@Danielle-nz9tn
@Danielle-nz9tn Жыл бұрын
Absolutely!!! I know this because I’m currently detoxing from Adderall (amphetamine salts)-which I’ve taken with prescription and as directed. I’ve been drinking the equivalent of 2+ French presses of coffee per day most days since not taking Adderall (sometimes also having to get a Monster drink in the afternoon!). Many of those days I feel like I don’t have ANY caffeine in my system at all. Like it doesn’t even register in my brain. It’s VERY difficult. I can’t even imagine trying to detox from street Methamphetamine or any other non-prescription stimulant.

I understand why they used coffee as an example but how can they use something so minute in comparison to amphetamines. Coffee doesn’t even come close to the physiological crises that occurs. That’s like saying me stumping my toe is just as painful as having my arm chopped off with a saw.

I only share this because I want you to know even six months later you’re not the only one. I used crystal meth all of college to get 2 degrees in 5 1/2 years and it turned me into basically a superhero. The entire time at ASU I ran side businesses to start investing money and pay for college out of pocket (all the wild ideas Meth gave me) well check this out, I graduated without anyone knowing (people always wondered how I could drink so much and never black out) so I graduated and opened my first 2 businesses and saved around 186,000 cash without even being a drug dealer. So now by this point my egotistical cocky little persona has figured out the secret password to life. So I took my genius plan into the real world and I literally convinced myself over year’s I could do this shit for the rest of my life. I used it like I had a medical card and I was only allowed to take it every 8 hours blah blah blah 😑 for 6 more years it worked. I had the world fooled to the truth behind the curtain, sadly I didn’t understand the process of addiction and how over time it can literally re-wire your brain and some people it happens immediately on those reward centers and for other it happens slowly over years while they think they are living life to the fullest.. So over those 6 more year (11 years total) I built a few businesses , got married , traveled the 🌎 with it secretly 🤫, bought some property and made really good money that I didn’t ever deserve. I can’t really pinpoint the exact moment it was start to all fall apart but eventually it did. My body craved that shit so much that I didn’t even know I craved it i just thought I was getting another glass of water. Then the psychosis started and I acted on and did many things I still don’t remember. What I do remember is one of my businesses I owned a personal training company and I would go in the gym and randomly when I opened the front door or saw someone I knew I started to feel like the WHOLE WORLD WAS JUDGING ME LOL. Well anyway I apologize for commenting and boring you or wasting anyone’s time, I just love to share the detail about my story when I see someone else thinking the anxiety is the worse part. It is , the panic attacks are so bad it makes you truly feel like the world is out to kill you. Long story short mentally i declined so fast, I was basically living in a panic attack and sweating with dilated pupils. The shit I did in professional work environments during that time took me years to heal from with therapy. And when I finally woke up. Everything was gone, business, wife , home, dogs , self respect, knowing who I was or thought I was was gone forever. 11 years destroyed in 6-8 weeks max. The only positive part of this story I share in CA or AA a few times a week with 5 years clean. Eventually my brain and body recovered from the stress i had put on myself for so long. For a whole year I couldn’t really process or understand how I ended up there cause my short term memory was gone. When it recovered months later the tables flipped again and I couldn’t remember my past experiences and life because for the first time in over a decade my authentic self was back and everything else just became subconscious including the wife. Goodnight 💤

You cannot just go there and get help. If you call and they answer..they say sorry no beds..or that you need to speak to a crises center first..which the number they give you doesnt really help. This should not be so freaking hard! I dont know what else to do. I guess I will go back to the hospital and just refuse to leave...and let them fight thw system...they clearly arent helping or hearing me!

I never did much meth. Daily yes, but only a small amount in the morning like others do coffee. So i still eat and sleep and no one even knows! Not friends or family or oven my grown kid who lived with me. Yet withdrawals from meth lasts months for me. A week without is easy. I just sleep and eat. Week 2 and 3 i have overwhelming anxiety over everything that could go wrong in my life ie getting evicted, losing one of my cats etc, so i have panic attacks one after the other, i see monsters, cant sleep, cant get motivated, even making an important phone call is too much for me. After several weeks of being like this, i end up getting some just so i can clean my apt and make important phone calls!

I am also taking Suboxone from an old opiate problem. All I can think to do all day and all night is take more Suboxone, chain smoke cigarettes, drink different herbal teas and search my room for lost crumbs of drugs. Which I may find here or there. I found a small amount of crack and when I smoke that how I cannot feel a thing! But my heart pounds and I have to instantly crap. What I mean is I think meth severely brain damaged me! And I can't feel anything anymore but uncomfortable!! Even when I use meth these days I don't like how I feel. Usually it makes me feel kinda sick. And I usually use it but snorting or smoking then I have to lay down and sleep! Seriously I am affraid and completely on my own.

@@skilleri3218 unfortunately still using. Been adding in alcohol lately as well.. I haven't felt "high" in probably 3--5 months. So it's really stupid. Been getting really intense anxiety attacks the last month or two. Been more depressed than ever in my life (which is really saying something!) Very suicidal. It's not just this drug shit. It's the coming to terms that the battle will never be over. I don't fit in anywhere and never have. It only looks worse any more. The world is really going to hell. Everyone I come into contact with now is a phone zombie. No one acts right. I know these drugs are intensifying my negative feelings. But it would all be there without them too. Just been at war so long I don't have shit left. Wish I could find something left to cling to. Exercise is very helpful when getting away from any drug. With meth it is a big aspect because you have to keep your mind and body moving and stimulated. Im glad to here someone out there is doing better. From many past experiences just keep going! If you can get to about a month it gets much easier. You will still not feel right. Feel empty. Like you need to reach for something that your not getting. Nearly as major as say not eating food for as long. But the actual compulsion to want to get more drugs does ease up around 3 weeks and after. Also know that every time you get this far and then slip up. The next time you try to quit becomes even more difficult. I believe there is something known scientifically as well. Not sure what its cause is. But if you can not relapse constantly. You will be better off. I almost think it's better to just use until you finally put it down for good. Now that it's getting better weather where I live I have been atleast walking and riding my bicycle a good amount. And this is helping my not feel so shitty and weak. I spent most of the last year just in my bedroom. And many days of that sleeping. Gained like 40 pounds. And for whatever reason my left foot started to hurt severely when ever I tried to stand. Gout? Who knows. Really it feels like meth started to rot away at my nervous system. Good luck out there! And fuck the ones who played any role at making so many already in pain people now have drug addictions in America. This shit isn't being smuggled by the asshole of the corner. Ruining lives is BIG business. and I pray one day the evil that helped inflict this nation to these torments will burn.

Any psychological effects after 30 days of quitting meth?
@matthewgabbard6415

What does coffee have to do with the subject at hand? Yeah, technically caffeine is addictive, but come on. Talk about amphetamine withdrawal, that's what people clicked on this for. Also that guy talking about weed was pointless. I've never been a speed user, but I would assume it would be harder to kick than coffee, so you probably shouldn't minimize that struggle, or try to call coffee drinkers drug addicts.
@SandstoneCare
@SandstoneCare 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your insights and thoughts on this. To answer your question, the reference to coffee, weed, and other examples were not made to say they are the exact same addictive experience as speed. They were used as a comparison for when the body is relying on an outside substance in order to feel stable, relaxed, or even just better. The concern is that overtime, we can become unaware that the reliance on this outside substance is becoming a maladaptive coping mechanism. This would lead to things getting worse, and to your point, with a more addictive substance like speed, it should be taken even more seriously.

What I don't understand is that I experience none of the side effects from methamphetamine that most addiction clinicians describe. For myself, limiting my methamphetamine intake to oral ingestion, 5 days a week, and no higher than 75mg a day(and this is divided into no more than 3 dosings, but most often I take less) has increased my productivity and I have no problem eating or sleeping after a shift of work. The treatment this video seems to be offering has more to do with managing compulsive behavior than it does the dangers of the substance itself. I'll admit what brought me here though is my concern over the lack of conclusive data online that can show how it can adversely affect the body. It's not fair the government makes things illegal and precludes our ability to research in an unbiased manner.

just love that woman expressing that “caffeine is a powerful stimulant” then going on to compare drinking coffee to meth addiction… I have to wonder just how patients who are detoxing off of substances much more powerful and harder to give up feel when she says that pile of crap to them?” That’s the best she can do to be more relatable? Well there are many huge differences, one she never injected coffee into herself, or ever have to engage in illegal behavior to get her fix of coffee. And when she went on about “the ritualistic behavior that many engage in” saying when she drives by a coffee shop and smells the coffee and how triggering it is for her and compares it to a meth addict seeing a set of works or a pipe and how it excites them… I give her a C for effort but her comparisons are so far off I feel like she should do a bump of meth and see just how far from reality she is, for someone to try and come off like she has any clue about addiction is just crazy, all she did was to hit the “bullet points” drug rehab counselors been spouting since the healthcare system started treating addicts like sick patients which they are, and her being someone who probably believes if she ever did drugs then her god will send her to hell, so when she talks to people who got stuck in the trap of addiction and their lives fell apart, she must be biting her tongue as not to tell her patients how she sees them as weak, pathetic and stupid but on top of that, they are flawed and irredeemable and their lives were over after the first time they ever “did drugs with someone to prove they were cool”… I was addicted to heroin and was in treatment many times at different places and I met her clone more then once and they never helped me, only tried to make me feel like more of a POS then I already felt about myself! And I was in a dual diagnosis treatment center where all the staff were veterans of addiction and let you feel like a person worth helping to get through what will be one of the worst times of your life, even though none of the treatment centers were where I finally gave up that crazy ass addiction the place where the staff really knew what their patients were going through and didn’t look down on them like bad children before taking their belt off to beat their ass… after watching this I am pretty sure Sandstone Care is a religious based treatment center, which if that helps you to get and stay clean then this might be a good fit for some, but these are people who are ignorant to the struggles of addiction from a first hand experience and are reading books by people that saw it but lacked the empathy to understand it in any sort of context.. They signed up for an insurance companies paycheck for a failed system, and yes it’s failed because they have a success rate of around 10% “so they say” I would bet it’s much lower then that because they don’t follow up with patients after they leave, they only “help” when they are getting paid to “help” if it can be called that… And the guy who had 3 minutes talking time and “a friend who couldn’t eat unless he got high on weed?!?” Sorry pal but I don’t believe you would even talk to anyone who admitted they smoke pot, and pot isn’t and never was a reason for anyone to be in rehab, this is how out of touch the staff at this place really are! Dr.’s now prescribe weed to their patients now so most of what they said is outdated though and opinions of people who have no usable skills for what they are attempting to treat, it’s shit like this that really triggers me, when someone who’s only experience with a terrible struggle that affects millions around the world is what they read in a book that’s full of misguided and wrong. Let recovering addicts treat suffering addicts because if you never went through it yourself than you will have nothing of value to help, just opinions that you should feel shame for even entertaining in your head!!! But I guess there aren’t many jobs that will pay someone with a 95% failure rate????
