What Is Dolby Atmos and DTS-X? - A General Overview and Review

The video contains a general overview of Dolby Atmos/DTS-X, including history, requirements, configurations, limitations, and my thoughts on these formats. Dolby Atmos is a immersive surround sound format used in some movies. Unlike other formats, Dolby Atmos and DTS-X support ceiling speakers which are positioned above the listening position. These discrete speakers provide a unique 3D experience that adds a unique feel to most movies. Dolby Atmos can be configured in two different ways. It can either be setup using in-ceiling speakers or Dolby Atmos-Enabled speakers can be used. A Dolby Atmos-enabled speaker is a speaker that's angled towards the ceiling and reflects sound off the ceiling in order to create an overhead effect. This works well in some rooms but doesn't provide the same experience as actual in-ceiling speakers.

You should have mentioned upscaling. Upscaling takes a 5.1 or 7.1 and adds the ceiling speakers into the mix. Neural:X sounds amazing and in my opinion just as good or better than Atmos or DTS:X. Any receiver with Atmos will have upmixing capability. And my system only has 2 ceiling speakers and still sounds great! And if you cannot, or are afraid to cut holes in your ceiling you can use small satellite speakers and mount them to the ceiling for Atmos, I repurposed some Polk RM7's and they sound great.

Finally! Someone that gives a straight answer to a needed question. I am planning on building in my 26x12 basement into a home theater, you have given me awesome information. I currently have 5 Klipsch shelf speakers to start with and 2 Infinity sides, but will need to get another receiver based on your great recommendation. I will check out the Denon (as I have been looking into them) as well as the Onkyo and possibly either Yamaha or Marantz (although pricey), still you have given me a great start. Have been puzzled on Atmos based speakers, but you have answered my question... Thank you!

Cheap equates to something very low priced or very inexpensive. Affordable to me doesn’t quite say this is very low price just that it isn’t expensive that most people can afford it but it’s not a bargain as cheap might equate to.

Great video Personally as a sound engineer I HATE the Dolby Atmos enabled speakers that point up ward relying on reflection will NEVER be any where near as good as discrete speaker in the actual spot you want sound to come from PERIOD !

C815richard YES!!! The Atmos speakers are a gimmick at best. Put a damn speaker where you want the sound! It’s a ridiculous idea and can only hurt the sound of everything else. Can’t imagine spending all the time perfecting a setup, adding treatment for reflections as needed just to add those!!!!

Yea its like curved TV burn worse. at least with the TV it should be obvious where the one beneficial spot is. with the speakers imagine a large number of owners without pro setup(and many with it from clowns like geeksquad)wont even have them setup correctly with the correct angels to get even their diminished effect. add to that the wide array of ceiling textures, paints and everything else. they will have their place tho, I guess if you have 0 access above the listening area..maybe at that point choose another room for home theater from an engineering standpoint lol

This is a great video and informative but I don't understand why everyone believes they need to get just IN-CEILING speakers. Personal any speaker with the right specs can be just be mounted to the ceiling. The reciever iteself will just produce the sound needed to the speakers on the ceiling, you just need to aim the speaker directly to where you're sitting. That's what I have for my setup and believe me it sounds amazing!

They both sound great to me. Now for the confusing part; when I watch an action movie encoded with Dolby Atmos, I really have to watch the volume, or the room feels like it's coming apart. When I watch an action movie encoded with DTS:X, I have to crank the volume by at least 10 db to reach my preferred listening levels. It also sounds weak in the mid bass range. The Bass seems to be all or nothing, while Dolby's is literally in your face, all the time. Not sure why this is happening, or whether or not it's normal. With lossless tracks, the opposite seems to be true. Dolby True HD, to me at least sounded kind of dull and muffled, while DTS HD MA and even Lossless uncompressed PCM sounded more dynamic, with equal if not better bass performance. I am baffled by this, to say the least.

If you can afford a monthly payment consider financing it. Most big box retailers will give you zero interest for a full year to pay off your purchase. You can also buy used off craigslist. I have put together two 5.1 surround systems i bought from craigslist. Receiver from one seller and speakers and sub from another. Just test items before you purchase. It takes time but you can get it done.

Man, keep an eye out on the side of the road and thrift stores, yard sales etc. there is much to be had that people with much more disposable income discard. If you can figure out simple repairs you can really put together a killer setup for next to nothing, and probably decently current as well.

Thanks for the video! I'm looking to finally upgrade my Klipsch RF3-II system which includes RF3II mains, RC3II Center, RB61 for rears, and a Sunfire True sub signature. I actually have everything in your 7.2 system, not sure If i'm about Atmos yet, so most likely use the RP-280F for mains, also keep my Onkyo TX929 for the time being. Just wanted to get your impressions on the system, I've always enjoyed the sound of my speakers and the Klipsch brand, I'm torn between this system and spending a bit more and going the Martin Logan route, the motion series, most likely the motion 40, and a couple dynamo 1000 subs, motion 35xt (rears). I'm going to demo the ML at a local store soon, unfortunately no one locally sells or demos the higher end Klipsch models, so I'm left getting word of mouth reviews. Cheers!

i just played transformers age of distinction, which is a dolby atmos movie, and i was blown away by the sound, there was so much more effects coming from behind and above me than i have ever heard before on any disc without atmos. the strange thing is, i dont have any atmos speakers, i only have a centre, front left and right, and 2 rears. this proves to me that an atmos movie is far more superior for sound effects than a normal bluray even without an atmos system

Great video. I myself did not want to cut into the ceiling and I definitely did not want ceiling bounce reflected sound speakers (don’t believe the marketing, the ceiling bounce speakers are nowhere close to as good as ceiling speakers). So I repurposed four old small satellite speakers I have (the Harman Kardon HKTS1), mounted them to the ceiling, pointed them toward the main listening position in my media room, did the EQ adjustments, and I now have sound object audio without cutting pieces out of the ceiling.

Two subwoofers is nice but... you can get headaches with too much bass in some cases. The fix I used was to install bass transducer under the sofa. You can feel a solid bass at lower volume with those. I have seen a few videos of expensive home theater setups and none mentioned bass transducers! It is one of most affordable items and yet makes a big difference. - I discovered bass transducers the first time I went to an "AMC Dolby Cinema" theater, check if your local AMC theater has one of those in your area and check them out by yourself.
@OMGWTFLOLSMH
@OMGWTFLOLSMH 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a transducer is one more piece of gear though, that requires another amp and a cable run on the floor. Your bass shouldn't give you headaches if it's adjusted and equalized with the levels of the other speakers in the room. If it does, you have your volume on the system set too high.

You should try another matching tower on its side with the feet removed for your center channel. I have three r28f towers, one on its side for center, (klipsch RB 51 IIs for rears) and it sounds amazing. No comparing dual 8 inch woofers to the 5 or 4 inch in most center channels. Center channels are WAY overpriced. If you have the room guys, just get a matching tower for your center, sounds fantastic! I got the klipsch on open box clearance over a few months for about 160 a piece...way cheaper than even a "cheap" klipsch center channel. Look for open box clearances, or used.

Any of us would love to have a similar Atmos system. But, it should be noted that the LAST thing any one should use are speakers that bounce sound of surfaces before they get to the viewer. As in this Klipsch system. There are manufacturers like SVS that make "height speakers" that can be mounted on the front and rear walls with the face of the speakers angled down towards the viewers. Or, use in-ceiling Atmos (angled 45 degrees drivers) in-ceiling speakers. Which any one can put in if building a HT room.

Im familiar with matching timbre but the polks match very well with the klipsch speakers. The klipsch ceiling speakers are overpriced anyways. The main reason for the difference in volume is related to sensitivity and the fact that I'm using an external amplifier for the polks.

Have watched three of your videos & has been an educational experience, thanks for sharing your expertise! That stated, how does the DTS/DTX (some brands calls it VirtualX) work in soundbars when TV is connected by HDMI ARC? My soundbar is the Yamaha ATS-1080, Costco model of it's parent, the YAS-108 for two thirds of the price. For it's price ($150) is loaded with features, to include both TOSLINK & HDMI ARC, plus another HDMI port for (possibly) passthrough, DTS:X as well as BT 5.0 & two subwoofers (120W total). Plus the option to add a powered external if desired, all of these features rarely heard of in this price range. TV is a VIZIO V405-G9, 4K, HDR10, HDCP 2.2, plus have the same in a Roku Ultra & 4K Amazon Fire Stick, connected to the top two HDMI 2.0 ports. The 3rd is ARC & connected to the above soundbar. Wanted a 43" model, yet the only option for me was a 40". Fewer choices & some higher priced versus the more plentiful 43" variants, some with more features. Being I live in an apartment, have to respect my neighbor (who is also my landlord!), and with limited funds, don't have the option of a true home theater system. So will the HDMI ARC give me anything that TOSLINK won't? I'd like to experience whatever DTS provides with my soundbar, at the same time, just as Dolby Atmos, won't get the experience all the time. Should the soundbar be facing upwards (in natural laying flat position) or mounted to the TV stand somehow, having the sound flowing towards me? I suspect the latter, yet don't know enough about DTS, if it would kill the experience. Lastly, both the TV & soundbar is in an older (90ish) entertainment center, with doors that closes after usage. Helps to keep the dust off everything & didn't want to swap a $2,000 piece of furniture for a low cost TV stand. There is the option of adding a receiver on the left side & the center is wired well, an abundance of plugs for everything. To play it safe, plugged the main cable into a 750VA UPS, which allows for a safe shutdown of connected equipment & gives a clean flow of electricity. Have needed to use this two times, in fact have a total of three of these, to protect my computers, modem/router, printer, phone & other accessories.

I am building a similar setup and just like you, I look for stuff with better value. I started off with the JBL Loft series, Epson projector in 2014 and now, I've Klipsch R820F X 2, R52C X 1, R41M (surrounds) and R51M as well. So far, I've hooked them up with my Onkyo NR 555 and using apple tv 4k, firestick and some android box from amazon. for seating, 2 recliners (manual) and now working to finish the section of the basement. Almost everything is bought of auction sites, open boxes etc.. All my gear so far I've spent $850 CAD so almost $590USD. Ohh.. did I mention that I got an additional amplifier Onkyo TX NR -656 for $93CAD or $70 USD!!! .. I've 12" precision acoustics subwoofer and now looking for deals on Klipsch 10" & 15" subs. I realized that the fun part is doing research, optimizing the setup, buy, sell, buy speakers until you are satisfied.

You made a good point that a friend of mine used to ridicule me for....spending thousands of dollars to hear a few sound effects! He used to say sound ifs free!! But we audio addicts will go to extreme measures to hear one jet fly over our heads! I then realized with all the money I had spent, there were very few good surround movies out there...and I had to buy the Blu-Ray version to get the surround sound. After the downfall of Blockbuster, I decided to stop wasting all this money as I had thousands of dollars worth of Blu-Rays I never watched again. I used to hate paying $30 for a disc and the movie was so boring,I never saw the end> Why is it that we can return almost everything if we are unsatisfied, except dvd's and cd's!

Great video. I also have that same Denon Receiver. But your speakers and subs *look* (looks can be deceiving though) like they piss all over mine. I haven't set my system up yet (7.2.4) but I'm fortunate that the room is very ideal for an Atmos setup.

+JopieHaargel yes and no. It's awesome with SOME movies but not all so sometimes I forget they are there. But with some atmos movies or even when upconverting a non atmos movie.

What's goin' on *Chris Majestic*... *_Nice and informative video..._* I have a *5.1 surround sound;* but not in this high quality... What I have, Its pretty good. But, I DEFINITELY would like to upgrade... When you were talking about the ATMOS technology, that reminded me when I had 1st brought my surround sound home and hooked everything up; then when at a time: watching classic (cowboy shows).... I found out that the 5.1 sounds don't work. I (was) surprised to fine that out. (years back though) ---I'm thinking about a *Klipsch* surround sound 5.1; or if they have it 5.2...? Or as the saying goes: *"Go big or go home." Meaning a *7.2 Klipsch surround sound.* (budget allowing) of course... And if I can find that type of system? I looked and its either: 5.1 or (some) 7.1... Okay. I spoke my peace... I'll let you go. ---OH? Speaking of speakers; what do you do Chris?! A very nice sound system and *Luxury theater seating!* Some on is just barely getting by; and living an: "I do alright" style... B; Ha ha ha... *_Stay well and stay safe man..._*

Would love for you to do a video about how to get the most out of an Atmos setup with different configurations. For instance, I FINALLY upgraded my system which is an Atmos receiver, but had only 5.1 speakers by adding two Atmos enabled speakers that fire at an angle towards the ceiling. I re-calibrated, but overall I am a little underwhelmed. I have played some Atmos source material from UHD blu-rays and am not hearing "precisely placed sounds" as advertised. I normally have a very good ear with surround sound stuff. Any thoughts?

Why are they using a horizontal center channel? Using 3 identical speakers for LCR creates a seamless sound-stage.

I’m out on atomos. It might be neat in an actually theater but for the home I’m just not sold. The reason Dolby originally recommended your rear speakers be well above the listening position was to give you that sense of height. I remember going to 7 channels and it made very little difference. From what I’ve experienced of Atmos it also makes very little difference. To each their own but if anyone is considering the jump just make sure you’re coming from a a solid foundation. You’re far better off investing in better speakers for a 5 channel system or going to two matched sub to shore up your bass. If you already have a great sounding 5.2 surround then and only then should you consider an upgrade.
@ChrisMajestic
@ChrisMajestic 6 жыл бұрын
+sage11x I agree that there isn't a big difference going from 5.1 to 7.1 but I did notice a big difference with atmos. At least when watching certain movies. I think tweaking it to your liking after audyssey is key.

Ok so here is the thing. In a large theater Atmos does not add very much, thats because there is so much room for the sound to travel to start with, thus the soundstage actually gets mixed by the time it gets the the person sitting. In a small room, Atmos is much much much more apparent. Now this top fire speaker CRAP is ridiculous, its not Atmos, its gimmick. But if you do a 7.1.4 setup, the immersion is incredible. But to be fair, until you hear a full properly positioned Atmos setup, you won't understand. And 7 ch surround, in your argument, was not that big of a difference because the opposite to a room applies, it improves large or longer rooms. Physics is a funny thing!

Atmos can be very cool if you set it up right but is obviously limited to content available. I enjoy gaming and there’s some games that utilize it which adds a whole new level of immersion. As far as I’m concerned the sound reflecting Atmos speakers are nothing but a gimmick. If you want sound from the ceiling then put speakers in the ceiling or high up on the wall. With all that said if investing in a new setup your best bet would be putting your bulk of cash into your front 3 speakers and sub. Speaker technology doesn’t really change. A high end speaker 20 years ago is still a high end speaker today. If you use an AV receiver exclusively than you are generally paying for features. Which is why I like separates. Just like speakers a high end amp will always be a power house. My XPA-1 monoblocks will be used for a long time!

Hello Majestechs, I'm looking forward to doing the 4 in-ceiling speakers as well. I wanted to ask you if you had to place the speakers in a housing or not? Also, if my surround speakers are like 5 inch woofers, is it best to try to keep them all close to the same size like getting the 6 inch instead of the 8 inch speakers? Thanks in advance if you get a chance to reply. Such a great video btw!

You mentioned that you have the RP-280F, floor standing speakers. These look more like the R-625FA floor standing speakers. Correct me if I'm wrong. The RP-280F, does not have the reflective speaker on top. However, the R-625FA do have the reflect speaker.

Great video, I also watched your setup video....very nice. I'm looking at a Klipsch setup myself at the moment. Here's what I'm looking at: Pair of RP-280F, Pair of RP-240S, RP-440C Center, and R-110SW. I'd like to add dolby later but I'm not sure if I'd want the Dolby enabled speakers by klipsch to hang at the front wall or in ceiling yet. My question for you though, considering the 280F series, do you think they will go well with the rest of the setup as in the 440C and 240S or will I need the 450C and 250S series on center and surround...or go down to RP-260F series? Now, my living area that i'm setting this up in isn't quite a theater room like yours and I do not have a back wall for rear speakers just the side walls for the surrounds. Also, considering budget, I'm looking at the Yamaha TSR-7810 7.2 receiver from costco, will that work well with this setup? Thanks

Nice thanks for the tip. I will set up my system. Now I had Yamaha receiver for many years back in the 90s and I was blown away with the separation of sound and detail. Now I had a Denon for several years and It recently died on me. Question is when I'm shopping for a receiver with dolby atmos should I get a denon or Yamaha? I love both receivers but to me Denon puts out slightly better sound. This can be subjective, but its just me. thanks for any info.

You dont shoot a movie in Atmos, you mix it in that format in a sound studio. So technically every current non Atmos movie can be re-released with a freshly mixed Atmos track, if they find it profitable. That is basically what is happening with the UHD discs. The standard Bluray is getting a 5.1-7.1 track while the HDR UHD Bluray releases are getting Atmos exclusively.

Be happy that nearly all movies that were released with atmos in theaters, are released with an english atmos track on BR and UHD BR. In german every 20th of those movies gets an atmos track. The rest is the US disk with a new cover, with english Atmos and 13 other languages in DTS HD or even only Dolby Digital 5.1. And then they even ad 25 subtitle languages.
