What is Ego? From ancient Hindu and Buddhist literature to Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory, our image of self has been put under intense scrutiny.

Most of the episodes in this series are partially inspired from conversations with my friend Barbara Szymanska - bit.ly/3dmAizw
What is Ego? - Sigmund Freud, Hinduism & Buddhism | Ego Explained
In his psychoanalytic theory of personality, Sigmund Freud described human personality as incredibly complex containing several components. He postulated that the three elements of personality known as Id, Ego and Super Ego work together to create complex human behaviours.
While the Freudian ego is more about negotiating conflicting impulses and standards, the ego that’s usually discussed in eastern philosophy or spirituality, has more to do with recognising what the self actually is, when you say “I am”. Essentially it is about identity and the perceived separation of the individual from the world.
Ego death. Is it necessary? Through the lens of eastern and western philosophy.

Buddhism and enlightenment does not allow you to master your ego but to quell and subjugate it so that you become passive. This 'enlightenment' is a celebration of mediocrity. True mastery of one's ego involves much introspection, courage in the face of herd morality (overcoming the fear of what other's think of you), and constructive action towards cultivating civilisation (not activism, which is destructive by its very nature). People who are slave to their (herd) ego purport themselves as "empaths" but in reality are just serving their own ego and when someone comes along with a differing ideology (eg conservatism) the egoistical empaths all band together to tear down that person/institution. This is post-modernism in a nutshell. Paradoxically, the "empath" ideology is to denounce ego as "evil".

Fear, separation, a longing to re-unite..... Identity, uniqueness, different... we constantly live in a conflicted state because we feel separate but somehow know that we come from the same source. We try to used the ego to justify this separate identity knowing that it is a false construct and we just sense that it is a house of cards. When we see the seer behind the thoughts the ego begins to shatter. It isn't needed and it begins to panic. Culture desperately wants you to spoil the ego because it makes you a consumer. Identity and separateness are systemic devices used by culture to mislead you. Remember the first four letters of culture are cult. When you meditate you begin to slowly dissolve the ego and the toxic affect of culture begins to recede allowing you to see the beauty, love and simplicity of life.

Look at it this way if it helps: Your frustration of not being able to loose ego is the result of your ego itself demanding to loose itself and then not being able to do it. The answer to your question is the frustration itself. All that is after frustration is your ego again, still wanting to look for an answer and keep the frustration going when it already knows that there isn't any. I learned this perspective from UG Krishnamurti and I don't know if I could explain it to you. You should checkout the following links if my comment made any sense to you.

I struck upon a thought whether should i stop thinking. I forced myself into not having any ideas, beliefs, opinions in order to remove my self. But, thought is the only thing I can't stop. Its like I know the 'on' button for thought but not the permanent 'off' button. I however believe in J.Kishnamurti that when you see the truth, you see it instantly and get transformed. Similarly, when you know the root of thought, you are not able to think anymore. I do experienced the state where i was thoughtless, but if i know im thoughtless, its just another thought. Thought is a never ending series of llusion and self decieving. All this i am typing right now, however doesn't feel like the product of thought. Even though I haven't memorised any single bit of this comment, the observer inside is just letting out. It is a very delightful experience when you produce words which you just spoke out randomly or typed in boredom, and see their power. Most of the questions I think i cannot answer are just let out by this random wandering of mind. Even though, now my thought is aware of this entity, it seems to be powerless. So, when I speak out without any motive of getting an answer, I stumble upon the truth. But again, thought overcomes my mind after i have let out the truth. Thought rationalises what i just experienced and makes it worthless. I am again left unknown to the truth. Ending it here, its just another extraordinary moment here coming to a stop.

Good stuff. I had similar thoughts to the ones you described in the beginning, would have been nice if you told us your conclusion - if you think that was all ego, or which parts of the thinking were, and what you think about pride in general, is it beneficial?
@NorthernDiaries
@NorthernDiaries 4 жыл бұрын
My conclusion is that a healthy dose of ego is necessary, at least to live in a functional society. If you think about it, it's all semantics. You need self respect, and that's a form of ego, and so is pride. Pride acts as a motivation tool, which is absolutely necessary as well. So a balance of healthy ego and occasional self confrontation works well. But if you want to sit under a tree and not planning to get up, then that's a different story.

I think the objective of ego death is a superficial enterprise to begin with it's just another state of consciousness no less or more valuable than any other, personally I am happy to hold onto my ego to affect an appropriate change in the world for the better, I see ego death as a glorified form of apathy, but that's only my opinion

Hey, I loved this. It has given me an urge to share. In Indian myths, what you are referring to as "I" is told through the story of Shiva. His name translates to "that which is not" and is just one name among many given to him. There's another popular saying "har har mahadev" that everyone is Shiva(written as mahadev here - first among gods). He is also known as a pillar of infinite ignorance, bhole nath(translates to the innocent one). Through these stories we are reminded that I am not this or that, I just am. An eternal silence, a maddening dance, the artist, the painter, the dancer, the master yogi(yogi is someone who practices the union of self and not self), the one close to all animals and life, the one who is beyond death, beyond time and death and has no beginning or no end. These are only fraction of things we know about I. Because I am everything, I am essentially nothing. Because I am infinite, I do not exist. These things any many others have been known by the masters since time immemorial. I am just conveying whatever little I know.

@@NorthernDiaries I wasn't raised as a hindu so I find it fascinating. I want to share a story with you. Once Shiva called upon Brahma and Vishnu and set up a competition between them. For this Shiva turned himself into the infinite pillar of ignorance that he is and proposed that whoever finds the end first wins. Vishnu moves towards where the feet of Shiva would be and Brahma towards his head. After a while Vishnu realises there is no end to this as there is no end to things that we won't know and he gives up. Brahma on the other hand meets a flower falling from the head of Shiva, and being the creator convinces the flower to lie that Brahma actually went to the top. Shiva of course knows this is false and punishes Brahma for his arrogance. Another such story is about when Brahma was creating the cosmos. He was so engaged in observing his creation and appreciating it's beauty that he started spouting heads in all directions, east west north south and even the top of his head. At this time, Shiva was meditating on the mountains and by looking within himself he saw everything on the cosmos. He saw the countless sick children and wars and never ending suffering of mankind. This made him very angry. So angry that he picked up his trident, barged into brahma's abode and sliced his fifth head on top of his head. He demanded to know why would a creator make such suffering in this world and then have the gall to feel proud about it. Brahma by this time was scared and fell to Shiva's feet and explained that he just created everything without attributes (nir-gun). He didn't create suffering or hapiness, good or bad. But he gave humans the capability to create these things as they wished. It was upto them to experience joy and share it. Shiva realised this simple truth and forgave Brahma.

What a gem, I would suggest to look into the works of Carl Jung, I think he expands upon what Freud did, I am also fascinated by the merging of western and Eastern Philosophy. When you say make things more "simpler", I assume you're saying get in touch with your instincts instead of getting lost in your head, that's a double edged sword because as you explained with Freud's Id, your instincts are pleasurable but also primal and animalistic, they can also lead you to make mistakes, sometimes horrible ones, I think the ideal way is to balance your instincts and ideals, your Id and the superego. An off topic question, are you planning to make feature films?

I know that in Abhidharma Buddhism and other Nikaya Buddhist schools, they believe that the self, or for that matter the person, is just a collection of subatomic particles and mental constituents. They also believe that through enough diligent meditation, you can see the subatomic particles in everything including your own body. Therefore, this is the way to extinguish the idea of the self. If we're all just quantum events then at the quantum level, everything from tables to people would look extremely similar since everything is made out of the same quantum particles. Thank you for this video! Would you ever consider doing a philosophy of religion video on Buddhism?

Everyone has an ego, and it is not of Love. The ego is also not evil, although it is behind all acts we would consider evil. The ego is not a thing or an entity, it's just programming to take care of number one. This programming causes us to be self-servicing, self-centered, fearful, distrusting, defensive and aggressive. The ego is a sense of self, not something real or true. A sense of self is nothing tangible, nothing that can't be fairly easily overlooked, if its lack of realness is pointed out. The ego is programming that causes us to see life, ourselves and others through a particular lense; one tainted by fear, judgment, limitation, smallness and a sense of lack. The egoic programming creates a sense of being under attack or threatened by others and by life. The ego is in fear much of the time, and therefore divorced from Love. This fear is an illusion, an imagination of something fearful in the future; not based on an actual threat in the here and now.

Hey Rick. Thanks for your suggestion. I am open to collaboration but it has to be a right fit. One more thing is, the channel is growing at a steady rate, just not that quickly. One reason is the number and the frequency of uploads. For example: I took a look at the channel Vedant Rusty. He posted about 4 videos last week alone, and in total 167 videos. I post 1 video per month (if that) and I've created 30 videos in the span of 3 years. I am looking to regularly create more films and episodes, but it will take some time. I am ok with a slow growth. But I will collaborate soon. Thanks and please keep the suggestions coming :) This analysis is helpful.

The Garden of Eden, Kingdom of God and Tantric ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Samanam ++++++++ The story of Sumeria about a Garden and a naked Couple and a subtle serpent is a profound imagery and narrative of the human psyche and why we are here for. It is the basis of Judaism and Christianity and abit of Islam but the religions don't seem to understand the huge import of high philosophy that it entails... Since the religions cannot understand the beautiful story because of its origin in SuMeru of Tamizh Tantra it is pertinent that the explanation must come from the original source of its formulation only and that is the transformation from the natural to the Spiritual.. I am going to take this into a series of expositions because it won't do justice with just one article seeing the immensity of the topic at hand. Relationship, Ego, Suffering, Ascension, God, Free-Will , Destiny and more are all in this one story of the Garden of Eden which was suppose to be the Kingdom of Heaven which in turn happens by the spiralling upward movement of Tantra ....

It's from a film called Ivan's Childhood by Andrei Tarkovsky.

@@NorthernDiaries Never heard of it, but I think I saw this scene before at some point. My mom probably watched the movie at home, hence the reason why something clicked in me when I saw the clip. You tie-in your personal experiences/thoughts with the topic you document about, and that makes it really relatable, and thought-provoking for me, the audience. I hope to see more of your work and further growth of this channel!

I personally wouldn't use Freud's model for the ego. While ego isn't a universally understood thing, I think jungs model of a human psyche being the persona ego self shadow, and the animus is far more intuitive and carl Jung talks at detail about it. Just my opinion, though.

I very much enjoy reading Jung's work. But it's funny I've heard the same thing about Jung's work being an alternative discipline in psychology.

I am now in this phase where I am frustrated because of my existence. >:I

You are not alone! For me, my physical wellbeing always helped my mental health. Whenever I am frustrated mentally and existentially, I begin by checking my body. Am I thirsty, too hot, too cold, do I need a change in environment etc. I am not saying it'll be the same for you, but just sharing what works for me. Good luck!

Isn`t there awareness of frustration; awareness of the "my" (I) thought concerning existence ?

thinking is not the problem. You (I) are the problem, who thinks to be an "I". And you (I) are the solution, as Dayananda says beautifully. Thoughts come and go, but do you come and go?
@AlOfNorway

@@alfluchow8202 «I» never comes or goes, for “I” is all there is. “I” is the consciousness of life in every living body. Thoughts distort “I” by creating self-consciousness. Self-consciousness cannot be conscious of anything else but it self. Self-consciousness is not consciousness. Self-consciousness is the mind. Consciousness is the unknown life we all are. Only human beings have self-consciousness, because only human beings can think about themselves; which ironically also makes us unconscious, as there is no self-only life.

@@alfluchow8202Thinking is the problem that creates self-consciousness; otherwise we’d only be consciousness-the full extent of it. The thinker and the thought are one, and make up the mind. The mind is not consciousness. Consciousness registers sense perception and mind. The aim is to become as still as consciousness itself to be the consciousness you are, instead of your thinking mind-which we all think we are.

Islam The Beautiful Religion ( Be Just ) Quran 5:8 '' O ye who believe! stand out firmly for God, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the HATRED OF OTHERS TO YOU make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear God. For God is well-acquainted with all that ye do. '' Quran 4:58 '' Indeed, God commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which God instructs you. Indeed, God is ever Hearing and Seeing.'' ( God's The Rules Of War ) Quran 2:190 '' Fight in the way of God those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. God does not like transgressors. '' Quran 2 :193 '' And fight them on until there is no more oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in God; but if they cease, Let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression. '' Quran 4:90 ''.........So if they withdraw from you and cease their hostility and offer you peace, in that case Allah has not granted you permission to fight against them.'' Quran 8:61 ''And if they seek peace, then you also seek it, and put your trust in God. He is the Hearer, the Knowledgeable.'' ( Stand Up For Justice ) Quran 4 :135O '' Ye who believe! stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to God, even as against YOURSELVES, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor: for God can best protect both. Follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest ye swerve, and if ye distort (justice) or decline to do justice, verily God is well-acquainted with all that ye do.'' Quran 16: 90 "Indeed, God orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded." ( Who Are The Good Human Beings? ) Quran 177 '' Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in God, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives charity; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous. '' ( Freedom To Believe And To Reject ) Quran 2:256 '' Let there be no compulsion in religion. Truth stands out clear from error '' Quran 10:99 '' And had your Lord willed, those on earth would have believed - all of them entirely. Then would you compel the people in order that they become believers? '' ( Tolerance For Other Religions ) Quran 109: 1- 6 Say,"O disbelievers, I do not worship what you worship. Nor are you worshippers of what I worship. Nor will I be a worshipper of what you worship. Nor will you be worshippers of what I worship. For you is your religion, and for me is my religion." ( Protection for Idol Worshiper ) Quran 9:6 "And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are people who do not know. " Quran16:125 “Call people to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good teaching, and argue with them in the most courteous way” ( Friendship With Non Muslims ) Quran 60:8 '' God does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, God loves those who act justly.
